Barry How far apart do you plant your runner beans and do you plant one per stick.
New to this channel and have just acquired an allotment! Can you signpost me to any videos you’ve done on preparing the soil over the autumn/winter months please 😊
Lots of tomatoes there, all.of. them looked amazing. Didn't realise it was that simple to make a pasta sauce. Might try it next year. Great video
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Making pasta sauce can be so rewarding, especially with fresh tomatoes. I can't wait to hear how it turns out for you next year!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 thanks, hoping to improve my soil over winter this year, got lots of compost ready to use. Going to buy some organic compost, might put some shredded leaves in my beds too. That's the plan lol 🤣
Good show, cheers Barry
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the show!
I agree with Mrs W, they are all good. Amd what a wonderful easy to make pasta sauce! I grow a nice cooking variety called Stripped Roman. They are very large and meaty which makes them easier to work with than the San Marzanos. I also like a variety called Purple Cherokee for my tomato slads in the summer. They are an heirlom and not the prettiest tomato but loaded with taste. But mostly I grow Early Girls because they ripen early as the name suggests and hold up well in the fall when the nights get cool extending my season for up to 5 months counting the ones picked green and allowed to ripen inside.
Hi Frank, I hope you had a great vacation! The varieties you grow sound amazing. Purple Cherokee may not be the prettiest, but I always remember the old proverb to never judge a book by it's cover. Great tip for extending the season, thanks for sharing - how do you ripen yours inside?
The Couer De Boeuf look great! Definitely one I might try next year - I do love a fleshy sweet tomato. For me this year the Red Alert cherry tomatoes were surprisingly good and cropped very heavily. The best tasting I've ever tried was probably the Marmande.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the tomatoes! It's great to hear that the Red Alert variety worked out well for you. I hope the Couer De Boeuf brings you even more deliciousness next year!
U grow Coeur de Boef because it is usually seedless and i am intolerant to tomato seeds. I don't really care much for the flavour- I find it bland and i don't like the texture, which i find pasty but haven't found any tomato to date that is equally as seedless. I grow honeycomb, gardener's delight, and sun cherry or my hubster. I would love to be able to eat those varieties for their sweetness and tang, but alas too many seeds. I will ry the super sauce next year.I always make red and green tomato chutney yearly. I also sun dry and make passata. With so many yomatoes it is a very buey time of year. After pushing pounds of tomatoes through a sieve I treated myself to a mechanical passata machine from Franchi seeds. It will definitely make the task much quicker- and less messy. I found the machine useful earlier on, in making redcurrant jelly too. Happy harvesting 🙂
It's great to hear about your gardening journey! Coeur de Boef is a solid choice for seedless options. Your passion for making chutney and passata sounds delightful. Your dedication to finding the right tomato varieties is inspiring. Mrs W too has a passata strainer very handy for making passata more quickly. Happy harvesting!
You need to try Barry's crazy cherry if not for the name, 🤣they are a lovely yellow cherry, grow multiples! I have seeds if you would like to try!
Thanks for the suggestion! I love trying new varieties, and Barry's crazy cherry sounds intriguing and a great name. I might just take you up on those seeds!
My market more cucumbers have taken a long time, even with 1 growing it’s taken ages to grow and still not big enough to harvest but there is also more now coming finally . I was told it was a great choice but not seeing it myself
Thank you for sharing your experience! I completely understand the struggle, and it's great to know I’m not alone in this gardening journey. Market Moor is usually a prolific harvester, but even ours have struggled this year. Here’s to hoping for a bountiful harvest soon!
Money maker wasn’t on the list, I didn’t see it, that’s the one my dad likes as they are not too big but big enough for him to cut in half and put on toast or in a sandwich.
Thanks for sharing your dad's favourite! The Money Maker is definitely a classic choice for sandwiches and toast. I can only add so many to a poll on the CZcams studio, but like you have done there are always the comments!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 it’s not a problem about the poll, I was just mentioning I noticed I couldn’t see it lol Thought I was going mad. I will have to gat some seeds for next year so I grow what he will eat and not whatever I think is a good idea x
Thank you for your understanding! It’s great to know you’re planning ahead for next year's garden. Happy gardening!
Wat a good easy idea for paster source I’ll bi trying that ❤
Thank you for the kind words! I’m excited for you to try it out!
Do I take it Barry, you don't like tomatoes as much as Mrs W. ?
Correct Martyn, I like toms but Mrs W could eat a garden full!
Same here, like growing but soon get feed up with eating them. Like Mrs W pasta sauce though.
The thing is when we get to the winter and there are no toms that's when you miss them, but by making Mrs W's tomato sauce you can enjoy that flavour once again - do give it a go and let us know what you think!
What is the distance between your runner beans poles ?
Hi Martyn, they are 1M apart!
Is that usual Barry ?. Mean length wise not width.
Hi, to use up my courgettes I make a dish of sliced yellow courgettes bacon and tomatoes with butter and pepper and salt. Just divine.
Thank you for sharing your recipe! It’s always inspiring to see how others make the most of their ingredients. I’ll definitely have to give this a try!
Ooo looking fwd to those videos xx
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm! It means a lot to me that you're looking forward to the videos!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Since finding your videos I've been glued to them & your in my favourite part of the country xx
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to know my videos from Norfolk resonate with you!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 If i could I'd move to Norfolk as i love the county & the people xx
I’ve got outdoor girl growing on my plot. I missed tumbling toms due to building my poly at the time they needed to go in. Low yields so far this year. Grandchildren love a yellow Tom so I grow Sungold for them. I’ve made some salsa with a glut of tomatoes and my peppers and onions. Oh I’ve acquired a dehydrator too. It came from a free cycle site I shall be looking forward to drying my veg along with you. Thanks as always Pete
It sounds like you’ve got quite the garden project going on! Sungold tomatoes are a fantastic choice for the little ones. I’m sure the salsa turned out delicious-nothing beats homegrown ingredients! Pretty sure the dehydrator will feature at some point!
🥰
😊
Nice to see the lovely Mrs.W again...
Ditto
Thank you for the love! Mrs. W always adds a special touch, and I'm thrilled you noticed!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Your support means a lot to myself and Mrs W!
You can pulp tomatoes with a stick blender from raw, place a cupful into a sandwich bag, freeze flat, can make soup, add to pasta dishes or whatever.
Love that idea! Freezing them like that makes it so easy for last-minute meals. You're a kitchen genius! 🍅✨
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 now make a big pot of soup and do the same with pumpkin and minestrone. Husband is not a fan of soups.
Sounds like a delicious recipe! Pumpkin and minestrone soups can be a great way to warm up, and autumn is on it's way here Helen!
Despite all the new stuff out there i dont think you can beat the moneymaker and gardeners delight combo
I totally agree! The Moneymaker and Gardeners Delight combo has stood the test of time for a reason. It's hard to beat those classic flavours!
Great show well done
I really appreciate your kind words! It means a lot to hear that you enjoyed the show!
hi Barry, I grow sweetmillion
hi Barry again I grow sweet million in the green house and outside, I grow mine in fiber pots using my own home made compost I start them off at the same time ,I've found this way I can keep them all under cover till all risk of frost is gone then move half of them outside, this year has been a challenge but still had good results, my cropping has now finished inside and out .
Thanks for sharing! It's always great to connect with fellow gardeners. How's your sweetmillion thriving?
I really appreciate you sharing your gardening experience! It’s inspiring to see how you adapted to the challenges and still achieved good results. Keep up the amazing work!
Good evening Barry and Mrs w been at Allotment picked lots of tomatoes 🍅 them Ukrainian purple Tom's you were asking about Barry were meatey and smooth tasting I had butchers blood crimson crush alicante Shirley's yellow black cherry i am like Mrs w like all tomatoes 🍅 and about six colyflowers and broccoli about eight to and beetroot picked them will be putting garden delight the other half likes them. Your tomatoes looking so good Barry 👍 well mate bye to you both stay safe
Wow, it sounds like you had an amazing harvest! Those Ukrainian purple tomatoes must be delicious. Yes Mrs W does like her toms. Gardeners Delight are a lovely tom and we have to keep the better half happy. Keep up the great work in the allotment!
That's a great survey of your tomatoes. Sungold is my top one for taste. I also have some bright yellow ones that are as good but I've lost the packet so I'm not sure what they are. All the best to you both and keep them coming.
Thank you for sharing your favourite Ken! Sungold really is a standout. If you ever find out what those bright yellow ones are, let us know!
All my tomatoes are outside grown as I have a sheltered back garden. This year I have grown sungold for the first time they're by far the sweetest tomato I have ever grown and so prolific. I am also growing St Pierre beefsteak toms some are huge but not quite ripe yet so fingers crossed.
It sounds like you're having an amazing gardening season! Sungold tomatoes are such a delicious choice. Good luck with the St Pierre beefsteaks; I hope they ripen beautifully!
I enjoyed growing Cuor di Bue - superb tom. Have you tried growing any of the 'Brandywine's'? I tried the Pink Brandywine last year outdoors (stupidly) so nothing ripened, trying again this year in the conservatory... hoping for a nice cooking/sandwich tom! Nice to see someone who loves toms as much as I do!
Thank you for sharing your gardening journey! It’s always great to connect with fellow tomato enthusiasts. I hope this year's Brandywine brings you the delicious results you're looking for! I shall look out for the variety - thanks for sharing!
Just love your common sense tks been a shocking year def will be following you for advice
@alantaggart51 thank you so much for your kind comment we look forward to you joining our journey!
Barry Are red runner beans more susceptible to Blackfly than the white varieties
Hi Martyn, I can't say that I have noticed any colour worse that the other. If you can see them on your plants, try a garlic solution to help keep the numbers down!
Every time I sow Pak Choi in cells it gets mown down before I can even think of planting it out !
It sounds like you're having a tough time with your Pak Choi! Maybe consider protecting your seedlings with some netting or cloches to give them a fighting chance!
It looks very yummyxx
Hi Penny, it is and is a great way to preserve surplus beans!
My four yellow courgette plants are supplying my sister, myself & the local hotel. Same with cucumbers. Spinach _medania_ sown last week, along with winter salad leaves.
Wow, it sounds like you have quite the thriving garden! Those courgettes and cucumbers must be a hit in your community. Wishing you continued growth and delicious!
I've had nothing but powdery mildew this year on my melons, courgettes, squashes and cucumbers...lousy harvests from all.
I'm sorry to hear about your struggles with powdery mildew! It can be really frustrating when pests and diseases affect our harvest. Hopefully, next season will be more fruitful for you!
The whole idea pf sowing for winter harvest and next year is excellent. I'll be sowing most of your suggestions but.. what is Endive? I've seen other people talk about it, but what is it like? My runner beans are about 10 days ahead of you, now there's a first.
Hi Ken, endive is a leafy green vegetable that has a slightly peppery bitter flavour, often used in salads or cooked dishes. It's a great addition to any winter harvest garden! You must have many runner beans by now then - well done you!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Yes, 2Kg frozen today, another 2kg tomorrow probably. plus we are eating them twice a day. Never known a bean season like it. I'll get some endive seed and give it a go
Wow, that's an impressive bean harvest Ken! Right time of year and just the weather they like. It's great to see your hard work paying off. Good luck with the endive seeds!
I didn't do courgettes this year last year i had so many i went of thrm 😂. I did onion seeds yesterday have i dont them to earlier? 😅
Hi Mark, that's a shame about the courgettes - they are such a great vegetable that can take on so many flavours. Overwintering onions I shall sow towards the end of the month - so look out for that!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 cool thanks will do. Might try them again next year. Finally had my beef tomatoes, so much flavour, best tomatoes I've ever grown
Thank you for sharing your success! It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoyed the tomatoes. Wishing you even more delicious crops next year!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 it good to pass on our likes and dislikes. Might try sweetcorn next year
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I love that you're considering sweetcorn; it's a fun addition to any garden!
My yellow courgettes are far out producing my green ones- how odd! I am growing soleil and the green ones are Black Beauty. I grow Tokyo cross- fabulous little turnips. I had some gorgeous little multi sow seedlings but sadly the slugs got them 😞 I am wondering if I still have time to sow some more? They also ate my multi sown beetroots. Such a pain if it makes t tpo late to grow more. I grow winter purslane, Claytonia and Radicchio for my winter salads. Plus Asian greens and winter density lettuce. I have some endive seedlings to plant out. Your {ak Choi is looking fabulous. I love Pak Choi and Komatsuna. That's what I love about growing your own- you can harvesy at the sweet baby stage- something you can't buy in the shops! Baby beans, carrots, turnips beetroot etc. I mke runner bean, courgette and onion chutney- my hubster loves it. I add different spices to each batch for variations in flavour. My hubster is particularly fond of the chutney i add turmeric to. happy gardening to both of you 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing your gardening journey! It’s always inspiring to hear about others’ experiences. I’m glad you’re enjoying growing your own food-there’s truly nothing like the flavour of homegrown veggies - and yes sow those Tokyo Cross I just have!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Cheers Barry 🙂
😊
Hahaha YOUVE HAD MY PEES
Thank you for commenting! It’s awesome to know that my video brought a smile to your face! And they are Mrs W's peas!
We posted at the same time well kinda i posted a video 8 minutes ago and it has good editing
Thanks for sharing! I love that we both decided to post at the same time. I’ll definitely check out your video and appreciate the good editing!
I love Honeycomb as less prone to splitting than Sungold. Need to find a nice red so might give red cherry a go. Super Sauce first time growing, they’re massive, other new varieties this year for me are, Riesling F1 a baby plum, Garnet and Vivacious F1. Also growing Shimmer (lovely), Tigrella & Black Russian (giving them a miss next year), then San Marzano for sauces & Costoluto Fiorentino & Marmande as beef steaks…phew 🎉
Wow, it sounds like you have an incredible variety of tomatoes growing this year! I can't wait to hear how they turn out. Best of luck with your gardening adventures!
Happy Birthday.
Thank you! Your kind wishes mean a lot to me on my special day!
Hi great video. Will you be sharing the results of your using a new shop brought compost every month? I’d love to know which compost was best 😊 thanks
Thanks for your interest! I plan to share the results of my compost trials soon, so stay tuned for the updates on which one performs the best!
Hi Barry & Mrs W. Sorry to trouble you as this has nothing to do with this video. Not sure if you have covered this before or not but have you grown chinese cabbage before? If yes when is the best time to grow this as I'm not having much luck and we love this in our salads instead of normal lettuce. Thanks Bev
Thank you for your question, Bev! We appreciate you reaching out. While we haven't discussed Chinese cabbage, now is the time to sow all oriental veg!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Hi Barry & Mrs W. Thanks for replying I am going to give it another go and see what happens as we use this for salads and in shops it costs £1.35 . Being half Polish I learnt to eat this in Poland when they made salads but out there they are huge. I saw another channel but think it was American and he grew them in separate containers so might give that a try. Tomatoes are now starting to turn red. Loads of blackberries which the chickens love a nd cucumbers have got about 21 growing in greenhouse and this harvest has been better than last year. Just finished planting a load of lettuce for the chickens as they have thier own raised bed. They are partial to little gems Will update you later in year about Chinese cabbage. Thanks for all your videos I really learn lot from you. Keep up the good work both of you
I put my compost down when a bed becomes empty x
That's a great strategy! Composting not only enriches the soil but also helps reduce waste. Keep it up!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Yes it does & you spend less on bought compostxx
I get a delivery of organic compost and spread it first part of November before the snow flies. In between I use my own compost.
Thank you for sharing your routine! It’s always inspiring to see others dedicated to using organic methods in their gardening!
Don't forget to sieve some of your own compost for seed starting, I'm getting much better germination rates with my own compost
Thank you for the reminder! It’s amazing how little tweaks can lead to such great results in gardening!
I multisowed my Zebrune Shallots, had a great harvest this year.
That's amazing to hear! Zebrune Shallots are such a rewarding crop. What are your favourite ways to use them in your cooking?
I like to roast them with a selection of other veg, depending what is in season. Toms and courgettes in summer, and maybe root veg in winter. It's also good to pop in a Clove of elephant garlic with the roast😀
At my allotment we get deliveries of wood chip. I’ve made some paths with it but also put some in my compost bays. I’ve also collected grass clippings from a local green space where the council cut the grass and know someone with a horse, so have been able to get horse manure. Added to all this I obviously get kitchen veg scraps and gardening scraps and some hedge clippings, so I’m hoping to be able to have most of my compost home made next year. It definitely helps to keep the cost down.
It sounds like you’re really maximizing your resources! Homemade compost is such a great way to enrich your soil while being eco-friendly. Good luck with your composting journey!
I do my main compost spreading in autumn but usually replenish a bed in between crops. I've ordered a pile of manure for the end of August which will go on my plot. You are a great planner. I've got winter brassicas sorted this year but not much else. I plan to grow spinach and other leaves in the greenhouse too. Just about to order my garlic for planting.
It sounds like you have a solid plan in place for your garden Ken! Winter brassicas and greenhouse greens will definitely keep things fresh. It is always in the planning - Good luck with the garlic planting!
This week I acquired 36 red bell peppers I gave some to my daughter for her family, I put 4 in the fridge for fresh use with salads, I cut and froze half and cut and made Pete’s Pickled Peppers with the rest. Not a lot from my allotment this week a few courgettes and some potatoes. The beast is doing its job and I have bags of compost waiting. I’ve use one on the old potato bed and will be liming it and putting in more brassicas. I’ve made pickled beetroot but the re,wining plants seem too small to harvest yet. I put compost all over my rhubarb to feed it for next year I’ve had half a dozen tomatoes there’s loads just waiting to go red or yellow. Another busy week but I’m following your advice best I can. I’m torn between putting compost on the poor soil areas which produced nothing this year so I might get something next year, or bulking up the areas where I get some return already for greater success Thoughts All the best Pete
Thank you for sharing your gardening journey, Pete! It’s inspiring to see how you’re putting the advice into action. Your dedication is sure to pay off in the long run!
Good evening Barry and Mrs w been at the Allotment all day been busy picking Tom's and pulling onions and colliflowers and broccoli and beetroot picked the beetroot and blanched colliflowers and broccoli six bags each got more brassica to go in and son started more colliflowers of well mate hade long day worn out so bye for now Barry and Mrs w stay safe.
Sounds like you had an incredibly productive day at the allotment! Those veggies will be delicious. Take some time to rest and recharge Albert!
