Mr and Mrs W today I celebrated with 33 of my family and friends the 1st anniversary since my life saving stem cell transplant. We had a
re birthday meal, cake and drinks. I was given a long handled handled (dividing) spade Your channel has been such an inspiration on my cancer journey and I wanted you to know how much I value your content. I’ve been able to mirror many of the things you’ve demonstrated on my journey.(although I’m a few weeks behind you) Your channel is inspirational and your conversational approach warm. I’ve had to restrict my gardening during my recovery but am doing more and more weekly and I will continue to be fan . Of No Dig Norfolk Gardener. With fondest regards Pete

I got given a melon today. So it’s perfect timing for me. It’s in the greenhouse in a quad grow.

Hi Barry & MRs W.great video. It was 44 degrees in my greenhouse today. Yesterday I managed to 'cook' my squash, pumpkins and courgettes. I watered them early in the morning but it was obviously too little and by the evening they looked very sad. A deep water overnight soak and they seem to be a bit happier this morning but many have lost a few leaves. They should have been planted out by now, but due to the cold, wet weather, many crops are still just coming into harvest that should have been cropped leaving empty beds ready for the cucurbits. Hey ho, just another challenge this year's weather has thrown. My melons have set some fruit so I am hoping the weather stay warms now and they will forge ahead. Hope yours do too. happy gardening 🙂

It's been a strange year compared to recent years, where we were planting out beds at work with temperatures in the mid to high twenties. We've had similar conditions in Northern Ireland . I'll be keeping an eye on how your pumpkins are progressing

Perhaps you could grow the melons in the greenhouse if it’s warmer, and move all of the tomatoes into the poly tunnel.

Just thinking about something Charles Dowding said about the warm weather plants not being able to draw so many nutrients into their roots because of the colder soil we have had so far, and he suggested feeding the plants.

My first time growing corgettes or zucchini as they call them in the US...Can't beleive how quickly they grow. Record to date in the greenhouse 52 degress. Think I'll have a summer holiday in there...I'll probably boil but the basil seems to love it.

      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  Před 2 měsíci +2

Oh yes courgettes are prolific and grow really quickly! Ensure you check and harvest daily otherwise you will end up with marrows. 52 is too hot for us but do enjoy that holiday in there 😂😂😂

Yes Barry and 90% of my garden is still doing well but my winter squash came down with bacterial wilt so I'm afraid my first attempt at winter squash may be in trouble. On the bright side, if I have to pull the plants it will free up more room for late season peas.
I just planted late season russet potatoes in grow bags hoping to harves in late October. My plan is to use these during the winter months. Hopefully I will get a good harvest. My early and midseason potatoes are producing and looking great.

    • @nodignorfolkgardener4575

That's great to hear Frank that 90% is there! Sorry to hear about the squash. Love your attitude if something isn't working there is always a bright side! Great to hear your earlies are doing really well and I shall keep my fingers crossed that the late season potatoes produce!

I garden in the Chicagoland area. 2 tips I'll share: 1) Nitrogen. I give them a regular 7-10 day feed of water soluble organic nitrogen with a bit of all around water soluble.. Sounds counter intuitive, but they like extra nitrogen. 2) Don't let them dry out, but don't let them sit in water either.
I plant mine in with a balanced organic granular fertilizer, azomite (yes, I'm a believer), m. fungi in the hole. Oddly the plants I started in cells are larger than the ones sown directly...that's unusual for me. I' doing Sugar Baby watermelon, Kaho watermelon and a new to me one called Kajari melon.
I do have the advantage of heat...and golly we have had the heat early this year, you'd think it was August vs June. I chicken wire the bed against bunnies and net bag all melons once pollinated against the squirrels which love them. I've always kept everything I get on the vines with no problems. I typically only get 3-5 melons to set on a vine though.
Beyond the 4 legged stinkers, my only typical issue is powdery mildew. All melons have muscled through with a little Neem and Castile soap solution with the exception of Minnesota Midgets I tried......they went down within 8 days from the PM. Cantelopes seem to be worse at handling the PM, and so I'm not trying any this year.

Hi Mr and Mrs W, how I do melons is; true type melons, growing vertically up string, remove side shoots 1-5/6 as they appear.. after that allow side shoots 6/7-10/11 to form and hand pollenate the female flowers on them, using a male flower from the stem.. allow 3 fruits to form and remove excess side shoot after the fruit, remove all further side shoots and growing tip at 11/12 section.. hope that makes sense…
Water melons remove all side shoots and top plant at 12 (7ft ish) section, allow one or two fruits to form.. keep watered well but don’t allow to get soggy, and feed every water with weak dilution ..hope that helps ✌️

Melons unfortunately need a higher soil temperature, did a experiment last summer using straw to make a hot bed and old windows., now have a tunnel house am trying to think what container to make a hot bed in, for the melon. Harvested 3 sugarbaby and 2 honey dew. We had a dry summer in New Zealand last year.

Very good video, good info regards melons,I really think Mrs W should of let you grown a melon in the greenhouse for a comparison to the polytunnel, can I recommend Minnesota Midget for our U.K. climate, the variety is a cantaloupe so on the small side yet so deliciously sweet and good performer too, seem to pollinate quite readily and set fruit early, mine are coming on leaps and bounds👍I get my seeds from “Real seeds” based in Wales and good quality too,all the best 👍

My 2 melon plants (Emir) in the greenhouse are 6' tall have have at least 12 side shoots some of which are 3' long. None of the side shoots have 9 leaves but most have 5.
Do I select the 4 side shoots now & remove all others or wait until all the sideshoots have 7/9 leaves?
