At my allotment we get deliveries of wood chip. I’ve made some paths with it but also put some in my compost bays. I’ve also collected grass clippings from a local green space where the council cut the grass and know someone with a horse, so have been able to get horse manure. Added to all this I obviously get kitchen veg scraps and gardening scraps and some hedge clippings, so I’m hoping to be able to have most of my compost home made next year. It definitely helps to keep the cost down.
It sounds like you’re really maximizing your resources! Homemade compost is such a great way to enrich your soil while being eco-friendly. Good luck with your composting journey!
Like you I top my beds up once a year Barry.The time varies but always after two crops have been harvested.

Good evening Barry and Mrs w been at the Allotment all day been busy picking Tom's and pulling onions and colliflowers and broccoli and beetroot picked the beetroot and blanched colliflowers and broccoli six bags each got more brassica to go in and son started more colliflowers of well mate hade long day worn out so bye for now Barry and Mrs w stay safe.
Sounds like you had an incredibly productive day at the allotment! Those veggies will be delicious. Take some time to rest and recharge Albert!
I get a delivery of organic compost and spread it first part of November before the snow flies. In between I use my own compost.

Just added some grass clippings to my active pile. Hopeing to have 3 finished or nearly finished piles by the autumn to feed my garden beds.

@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Leaving tomorrow for the Jersey Shore. I'll be gone for 3 days and there is no chance of rain so the beach will be nice but the garden may go a little dry. My neighbor is nice enough to water my containers at least.

This week I acquired 36 red bell peppers I gave some to my daughter for her family, I put 4 in the fridge for fresh use with salads, I cut and froze half and cut and made Pete’s Pickled Peppers with the rest. Not a lot from my allotment this week a few courgettes and some potatoes. The beast is doing its job and I have bags of compost waiting. I’ve use one on the old potato bed and will be liming it and putting in more brassicas. I’ve made pickled beetroot but the re,wining plants seem too small to harvest yet. I put compost all over my rhubarb to feed it for next year I’ve had half a dozen tomatoes there’s loads just waiting to go red or yellow. Another busy week but I’m following your advice best I can. I’m torn between putting compost on the poor soil areas which produced nothing this year so I might get something next year, or bulking up the areas where I get some return already for greater success Thoughts All the best Pete

I do my main compost spreading in autumn but usually replenish a bed in between crops. I've ordered a pile of manure for the end of August which will go on my plot.You are a great planner. I've got winter brassicas sorted this year but not much else. I plan to grow spinach and other leaves in the greenhouse too. Just about to order my garlic for planting.
It sounds like you have a solid plan in place for your garden Ken! Winter brassicas and greenhouse greens will definitely keep things fresh. It is always in the planning - Good luck with the garlic planting!
Oh my gosh, Barry, it is much too hot here to be digging compost at the moment, lol! I will wait until the weather cools a bit before doing mine. I have just re-mulched a cleared bed of potatoes to plant in brassicas and beetroot. I havr beans, courgettes, salad crops, onions, swiss chard, blackberries and calabrese currently, later this year there is swede turnip, kohl rabi, winter squash, plus cabbage, calabrese, kale and sprouts,apples and pears, after Christmas there will be caulis, kale, sprouting broccoli, cabbage. It will cool down later this week and my message really is mulch when you need to not at just a certain time of the year. When filmed on Sunday it was a comfortable 24 degrees, even I wouldn't want to do that job today 34 degrees in Norfolk - I'll stay in until later this evening!
Don't forget to sieve some of your own compost for seed starting, I'm getting much better germination rates with my own compost

My husband shakes his head at me, I shred everything in sight, i love an amazon box when it has miles and miles of the brown paper in!! It goes down quickly! Take care

Spot on! My wife does the same with all my recycling. A paper shopping bag broke on us today, whilst shopping, and the contents spilled. She was going to put it in the bin, and then laughed at me when I folded it up and put it another bag for the compost. Perhaps we married the wrong person LOL!!!

Not sure if you have covered this before or not but have you grown chinese cabbage before?
If yes when is the best time to grow this as I'm not having much luck and we love this in our salads instead of normal lettuce.

@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 Hi Barry & Mrs W. Thanks for replying I am going to give it another go and see what happens as we use this for salads and in shops it costs £1.35 . Being half Polish I learnt to eat this in Poland when they made salads but out there they are huge.
I saw another channel but think it was American and he grew them in separate containers so might give that a try. Tomatoes are now starting to turn red. Loads of blackberries which the chickens love a nd cucumbers have got about 21 growing in greenhouse and this harvest has been better than last year.
Just finished planting a load of lettuce for the chickens as they have thier own raised bed. They are partial to little gems
Will update you later in year about Chinese cabbage.
