    Barry this BH was the 6th birthday of our grandson he asked me to bake an apple cake which we scoffed in the park with his friends in the glorious sunshine. I finished building my recycled poly and put the door frame in place boy was it warm building it. I harvested my field bean tops which I cut up really small and put in a risotto -lovely. I put 9 tomato plants in the poly 6 different varieties. I kept the Outdoor Girl and will plant those outside in 2 weeks. I planted a cucumber ‘market more’ which is small but has flowers on it. I have peppers to move out into the poly as well as aubergines.Sheffield is warming up! This week I’m hardening off my early bird sweetcorn and doing loads of weeding! Have a great week.

    I grow my tomatoes outdoors having a fairly sheltered back garden. When I plant them out I put a handfull of bonemeal at the bottom of the hole then water I find this helps preventing blossom end rot.I also sprinkle chicken manure pellets around the stem when planted.

    Always interesting see how you grow things over there in your maritime climate. Planting broad beans in October and all the brassicas you plant in the fall that overwinter is fun to watch when there's not too much going on here in the winter.
    I can relate to difficulties with starting plants. I use grow lights rather than green house and I think I mentioned problems I was having with some peppers and tomatoes this year. The fun part is figuring out the problem and making adjustments to fix it. I changed my potting mix and fertilizer and my plants came back nicely. Good luck with your tiny tomato plants!
    And yes I did have one pepper/chili plant overwinter out of the two I tried so 50% success. I just put it in a big pot out in the garden last week and it's getting ready to blossom so I think it's worth the effort. I don't know if it's a jalapeno or a Hungarian wax because I forgot to label but I'll find out soon.

      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  Před 4 měsíci +4

      I appreciate your support Frank! Gardening is truly a journey of learning and adaptation. There are many variables from potting mix to temperature and the balance of when to start them off. I am considering grow lights for next season. I am so pleased that you have managed to overwinter a chilli plant and like us you can look forward to a earlier harvest - hearing that has made my day!

    I grew Cuor di Bue beefsteak tomato last year. I wasn't keen on it - I felt it was a little bland. I have sown seed again this year as I had some left and a friend asked for some plants. I am growing gardeners delight, San Marzano, Black moon, Garden Pearl, Cherry Falls, Crimson blush, Crimson Crush, Gardener's Delight and Striped stuffer this year. It is very exciting growing new varieties. I overwintered my sweet peppers from last year. They are full of leaf and looking fabulous. I kept them in a South facing unheated bedroom window sill this last winter. I have been picking the flowers off this year's pepper plants as I want them to grow bigger before I let them fruit. I don't grow chillies as we don't eat them. Shame as they are such pretty plants. I've grown French marigolds 'Spanish Brocade ' this year. It looks really bright and cheerful. Can anyone recommend a good green courgette variety please? Thank you. Happy gardening Mr & Mrs W 🙂

    My tomatoes I started in March have all done well. I’m trying Tigerella this year. looks nice on the packet, with Red with orange stripes through it.Also my tumbling Toms are all looking good for some pots and hanging baskets. Red cherry tomatoes as well are looking good. Anyone would think I’ve got a large garden for all these, but I’m sharing them with my dear mother in law who loves growing in her greenhouse. She has,bless her, been diagnosed with Alzheimers. Also my cucumbers have only this morning poked their heads out. Two types this year for the first time, Marketmore and Burpless, love that name. Lovely time of the year. I was wondering if you ever plant tomatoes and chillis outdoors? I have limited space in a greenhouse. Not sure if I want to keep it just for cucumbers or need to blight proof the Tomatoes crop with some in the greenhouse? I find blight wipes out my Tomatoes every three years. This year is my first with the greenhouse.
    Keep up the super videos!

    • @nodignorfolkgardener4575
      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  Před 4 měsíci +3

      I appreciate your support! It's always fun to connect with fellow garden enthusiasts. Let's keep the gardening conversations blooming! Yes you can grow toms and chilli's outdoors, however they will not yield as much as being in the greenhouse, and you need the weather on your side (I am assuming you are in the UK). However if you sow a cucumber variety like the Marketmoor we sowed at the end of April,they do grow very well outside with an abundance of harvest. Then you can grow toms and chilli's in your greenhouse where they will be much happier and less chance of the blight strike!
