What is the "clay" you're using on the buffing wheel?
I use ceramic sticks. The holes in the wooden box alighn the sticks to either a 20 or 25 degree angle. You can't screw it up or get scratches on any part of the blade except the cutting angle. For a really dulll knife the ceramic doesnt work so well, but no quality knife comes from the maker dull so that is a non--issue. I like 25 for an every day working blade like a Leatherman and 20 degrees for more delicate or precision chores, like skinning, cutting muzzleloader patches at the muzzle, first aid, etc. I carry 2 pocket knives daily, one of which is a Swiss Army of medium size. The other is a larger, drop point single blade folder. I add a fixed blade when going hunting or fishing. I find sharpening very easy and fast if I touch up the blades 2 times per week depending on how much they were used. I neither borrow or lend knives. I used to but found the borrowers damaged the blades by cutting or trying to things that ought not be cut with a knife, like wiring, screen, etc. Or cardboard, which dulls a knife quickly. I am remorsefull for having sinfully lied to people when they ask if I have a knife. In my defense I have never ask anyone to let me use their knife. And if they don't carry one, it is likely they are ignorant of how to use or maintain one.
Loved the video. I was taught the same way that you just demonstrated by my grandfather and people tell me I'm doing it wrong. I shouldn't go in circular motion. I don't listen because it works great for me.
Yep glad the guy at the woodstore stopped me from sharpening my carving knifes i wouldve ruined them
Ferris Bueler grew a mustache.
I’ve never been told I looked like Matthew Broderick but thank you I guess
What is the green thing you put one wheel, and what is the black binding thats on the wheel, lookslike leather ? Thanks.
I use multi purpose cleaner on my sharpening stones.
Okay you got my attention.. how does that work?
I use Crown Spray Power, it creates a real slick slurry and floats the metal particles off the face of the stone better than water. I use the cleaner in place of oil.
but before you need really good sharpening your knife, without right blade's geometry you can't do that
Well yes, but if you got that down all you need to do is tune it up
Haha, that 'stache, brother!
Id love to have one like that, around here if you find one then usually looking at a hefty price tag!
Yeah. I found that out when I was looking at diagrams of one. But they are dang useful if you find one on a deal.
Nice looking basket weave ! Axe head sheath?
Thanks man. Im just experimenting with stuff right now. Had to make an axe sheath for that deadly short axe 😂
That edge is, by God".
Great video. That’s exactly how my dad sharpened his pocket knives!
Thanks man. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
Excellent video. The only way I ever got a sharp edge was to do little circles the way the old Boy-scout manual said to do it.
It never fails does it
Nice Machine👍
I got some kinks to iron out but she’s getting there
They have their place. I carry both. My leather man has one I cut balin twine with it. That twine is hell on an edge. Calf Ropers use a qi k blade serrated, with a pocket clip. They haft to get out , open them with one hand, and cut a rope quick. When get in a jam.
My dad gave me an old timer lock blade. One of the first lock blade styles they sold.
Thanks, I have and use a hefty pocket knife/hunting knife collection. I typically use a stone for worse cases, then a butchers rod for a finishing touch. Nice information…
I'm an acctual trapper that loves Trapper style knife. Best pattern for my needs. Pointed blade for opening cuts on furbearers and spey blade for actual skinning. Trapper style is also in my food prep survival bag. Mora is my second trapline carry knife.
i can tell by your mustache your option can be trusted .
And did you put the same stuff on the strop
It’s a jewelers rouge, but most polishing compounds will do the trick.
What was it you used to put on the grinder wheel and where to get it
My Great Uncle Hollis, a WWI veteran, showed me how do do much the same thing when I was 8 years old. He had an India stone, a Hard Arkansas stone, and he used his straight razor strop to polish his Buck folding knife. A good lesson learned...✔✔
You wanna stop by and take down this dead poplar tree I got over here . Thanks
Haha where’s it at, we will fall it
@@bustinout Just over here east coast Canada :) was a beautiful tree must be 100 plus years old , many branches ( unlike most poplar) half just up and died , the neighbors died a year before .
Man I’m sorry to hear that. If I was on the east coast I’d truck it on up there and drop it for you
@@bustinout I was just making a joke really , but it is stressing me out a bit, I'll figure it out but thanks though. Stay amazing!
Try a razor strap leather or at work we used cardboard no oil or emery cloth with a little oil
Check out my other videos. That’s the method I’ve adopted
Leave it original!!!
Yes sir
Just me it would feel wrong hanging a double bit on that short handle like you did there but it is kinda cool as all get out but I just couldn't do it, feel like my Grand Daddy would be lookin down and shaking his head lol
Haha it is a little bit wrong but man does it split kindling good 👍
Hey if it works, is it wrong? They is more than one way to skin a squirrel and sharpen a pocket knife... Keep it up and lets see some tooling a swivel knife work, im a leather guy and saw guy a pocket knife guy too over here in the Bluegrass!
I noticed that when you turn the knife over that you run it across the stone in the opposite motion as the first side. Does it matter if one hones both ides of the knife in the same slicing stroke direction?
I personally do not think it matters
I believe that is supposed to be a hollow ground blade, is it?
Not sure. I was just going with what I had there
Funny to stumble across this video, i just restored and am finishing up re-handling an identical hammer, that was one of MY dad's old hammers. The waffle head on mine was bowled, and worn flat in the center (dad must have good aim lol) , so i belt sanded it into a new smooth face. Nice job, dig the channel, subscribed
Thank you sir! I’ll do that to this hammer on the next handle lol
I turn the blade until the edge "bites" the whetstone. Then I follow sharpening rule #1... ( shaves hair on left hand or arm) that why I alway have one shaven arm and one hairy. LoL
My dad bought two old timers (stockman) in 69. Finally gave to my grandson and daughter. Always razor sharp. I now own a three blade buck, their version of the OT stockman. It's a great knife. A man who can't keep a razor sharp pocket knife is not a man or an idiot, or who doesn't understand the pocket knife rules. If you don't know what pocket knife rules are then you should ask some old guys.
How far away should I relocate a rat snake eating my eggs.m?
A couple miles!
I might have missed it in the video but what’s the grit on that stone
He definitely got a good edge, but, scratching the side of the blade while doing it, is too high a price to pay!
Can you do a close up review of that green copper lock case knife 😀👍👍
I just ordered a pair. Wish me luck. What line of work are you in? And how often do you wear the Sawyers?
As long as you use a knife properly you only need to sharpen it once and hone it for a life time
CITY BOY, CITY BOY Those are the most well manicured hands I've ever seen on a "man" on CZcams 🤔
I am sorry, but the squeaking footage made me laugh out loud. Thank you for your review!
It’s cause you buy a cheap pocket and I have a problem. That’s why your blade snapped at the tube.
What? 😐
It’s because you buy a cheap pocket knife is why the tips snapped
Oh tips! Yeah my bad man, I did not understand what you were saying. Yeah I found that knife. I wouldn’t buy that knife 😂
I just subscribed and know I'm gonna like your vids. Thanks!
Welcome to the Southwest U.S.A
😊 This is how my Grandfather, sharpened his knives, minus the buffer! Old sandstone outside and Mailpouch spit ! 👍 ...🙏🇺🇸
That first stone he showed you that he likes / can be picked up at Harbor Freight!
That specific stone can not be picked up at harbor freight. They might have something similar but they don’t have that one
I'm a trapper man myself and don't leave home without my schrade trapper and my schrade LB7 lock back...have a great day!
Good info, thanks for taking the time to share this.
Looks like a nice handy little lock back. It’s very easy to go overboard with sharpening gear, especially for a day to day working blade.
Thanks! its a super handy little blade. I couldn't agree more.
You forgot the most important part. Where do you get a good buffing wheel for use on a knife. One on Amazon sell for almost $90 and that’s about the only choice.
