I just like head on break because I can get noise, no clusters and if I pocket 1 the chances for running out is high
I am most comfortable with the head-on break because that’s how I play 8-ball, and your logic is my point exactly, though Idk how often I pot the 1 ball from head on 🤷🏻♂️😅
Enjoying your videos. I will be in Vegas August 9th for the captain's tournament.
Awesome! Good luck!! Thanks for the feedback! If you see me, holler! 🤙🏼
Man. I don't remember this match being so sloppy! I guess a win is a win. And now the name is fitting.
😂😂😂😂 I BARELY squeaked this out!
I’m in masters. I use both breaks depending on my opponent and score. A dry break with an open table is often a loss with some of those guys.
Awesome! Yes, this is very true 😬
I felt like I was at my local bar tournament, they swing at the 9 ball all the time. Their theory is if the 9 ball is rolling it might go in. We call them Montgomery shots.
Re-watching this, my 9-ball game is so incredibly weak… I should’ve been able to beat a constant Montgomery scenario before it got this far out of hand but 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
All right, game 10 now I'm starting to cringe
We played fairly tight through 8-ball, smooth sailing…. By game 10, the train had de-railed, and was tumbling down the cliffside …….. Thanks for watching!!
@@drewvonporte it was definitely good entertainment. Thanks
I always told my players, in tournament play, shoot your best you know. It is no time to try things your not proficient at. A solid B game will often win over a loose A game.
This is so very true 💎💎💎 Don’t overthink it 🧠🧠🧠
59:09 Gotta love that 9-ball ride!
Do you?……………… Do you “gotta” love it?……………….. 🫠
52:35 hmm. Look at the ball go backwards, LOL. If you are going to hit it THAT hard, you need more angle to compensate for the counter english the rail would generate. Diamond table rails seem to have an insane amount of counter english.
^ this is good information dude. Not something I was thinking about during that shot!!
40:30 The watcher is supposed to make a call immediately. It is either "good" or "bad". There is no "it hit at the same time". If the watcher leaves without saying anything, then it goes to the shooter.
Lol if the watcher leaves without saying anything…… you grabbed the wrong guy to watch it!!!! 😂😂😂😂
@@drewvonporte Absolutely. I would have serious trust issues if the person watching says "it was close" or "I don't know".
33:00 I played US Ameteur singles and currently on a Masters team. I mostly recommend new Masters players to play 8-ball first. There are people out there that play standard 9-ball regularly. So, they know how & when to push out. In fact, the other day I had to remind someone that leaving a 9-ball near a pocket was trouble, because it is not worth just 2 points. anymore
I prefer 8-ball so kinda lame if we don’t get to play it, or only play 1-2 racks because 9-ball got chosen, but same, I take the break and let their fate decide! 😒 Yeah, you can’t leave the money ball hanging!! 2 points lol APA 9-ball is such a strange game 🥴 Thanks for the feedback man, cheers!! 👊🏼
I used to play masters. I always take the break (when I win the lag). The format is better than the regular league, but the fact that slops are allowed and you have to take what you make takes away some of the "masters" aspect of it. Maybe if they made something closer to what BCA does, it would be more fun. Perhaps they could have us play 9 racks (3 of 8 ball - no slops - still open after a successful break, 3 of 9 ball, and 3 of 10 ball).... but I doubt APA would ever change the format.
That would be a fun format. I agree, I hate the closed break 🙄… I watch a lot of Ultimate Pool, and slop counts there for Chris Melling, so it makes me feel less dirty these days playing slop in 8-ball but 🤷🏻♂️ I know it’s kinda jank… This format is my favorite League play that I’ve come across, but your idea would be perfect 🤌🏼🤌🏼 Thanks for chiming in!! 🤙🏼👊🏼
is Masters Single or team format? Lee has some seriously good skills just had some bad luck but his game came to life in 9 ball. You had a great run out in the 2nd rack of 8 ball well done Great Win! Congratulations. My 9 Ball team almost made it to Vegas but we lost the second to last match at Regionals. I held my own though for my first time there. 5 wins out of 6 matches.
First time in regionals?! 5 for 6?! Nice!! That is awesome dude! I’ve gotten 2nd place in regionals (we called it “Cities”) a few times and damn that hurts… next time! I said it on there man. 5-0 was NOT a good description of how our 8-ball match went 😮💨😮💨 Thanks man! I’ll be looking forward to my next match with him 👊🏼
Sorry, Master’s is team format. 3 play per match (like the screenshot I showed at the end), but you can have 4 on your team.
@@drewvonporte yeah I thought I wasn't going to perform well cause so many people and so many eyes on me but wasn't an issue at all. I doubt I could replicate that kind of success in Vegas though.
@@Darkslide2AR-FE man, that same concept happens in Vegas too though! 2’s and 3’s play lights out, 2 inning games, and all the 7’s choke, WATCH!! Happy for you to at least walk away from cities proud man 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Yes, when what looks like a simultaneous hit occurs (from your last 8 ball rack), the call goes in favor of the shooter.
I thought so! I am 99% sure I hit 7 first, but still. Hilarious that I had someone watch the shot and he decided to plead the fifth 😂😂 James dude 😂
I play DJ twice a week and Masters every other Sunday. I am only a SL3 but I am getting better every day. Stopped playing for 27ish years. Been back going on 5 months.
Well welcome back to the game, Keith! I’m sure it feels like a long lost friend to be back to making 8-balls 👊🏼 Thanks for chiming in and welcome to the channel!
@@drewvonporte It iis weird because I was pretty good back in the day. I know alot of what I should do, but can't do it any more. Working on that.. LOL
@@keithnechetsky2067 oh Keith, that can be incredibly frustrating I bet!!!! Ol’ muscle memory should bring it back in time man 💪🏼🧠
Second ball break... Exactly. I second ball break alot, but there are reasons. My generally rule of thumb is on slower tables, on tables with crappy balls, or against an opponent that isn't giving me the tightest racks I'll second ball break. On tight fast tables with decent balls and an opponent that is racking fairly, head on is the way to go.
I like that rule of thumb!!! Finally someone who agrees that the head ball break is solid 💪🏼💪🏼….. but hot damn does that 8-ball fly outta there with the 2nd ball break 😳 Thanks for your alliance!! 😅
I look at the 8 ball and the two balls next to it. If there is a gap, then I'll do a second ball break unless my opponent is on the hill. The last thing I need would be to make an 8OB and scratch to lose the match.
At 18:43, I don't think there was any rail. If you watch it, at the very last second, it rolls away from the rail. Also, I won't be in Vegas, but have fun. I did a captains trip a few years ago and it was an absolute blast.
Idk, no one was that close and be a damn shame losing ball in hand to a table roll! I wasn’t gonna take it 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks man!!! Looking forward to it!!! 👊🏼👊🏼
@12:15 Congrats, DVP!!! @27:00 Maybe you were too close to the rail to stop shot the 1? Would have made things a lot easier. But can't argue with the flop 7🤣🤣🤣 @27:55 Your shape on the 5 was not great to get to the 6. I wonder if playing the 3 to get to the 2, then shooting the 2 to get between the 6/8 would have been a better play? You probably would have had a shot on the 5 if shape did not work out on the 6.... But I see you made the 6, so your decision was right. very good out!!! @43:15 I always try to cut the 9 to the overcut half of the pocket on these types of combos @44:00 I would definitely slice the right side of the 3 and send the cue 3/4 rails behind the 2/9. Don't forget about this safe in Vegas. All the pros play this safe. @45:30 Let that stroke out, DVP!!! The 7-9 carom was better than the combo anyways. @1:01:05 slice the right side of the 2 and send the cue down towards traffic @1:07:45 the cue hitting the left side of the 2 will put left english on the 2, so you have to play to the overcut side of the pocket. @1:10:00 double hit @1:15:25 This is a run out table from here. If you don't, I'm stripping away your 7 rating🤣🤣🤣 Good luck in Vegas!
Ryu I ❤️ You These are great points and THANK YOU for pointing out better safeties for my 9-ball game!!! I need to work on this before the big dance!!! Thanks man!!!! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Double hit without a doubt, but can't call that without a watcher, no one would ever own up to that, esp some dude trying to ride the 9 every other shot
@@drewvonporteHow many times have I not made the best decisions during my own games😂😂😂? We are always smarter watching🤣 You'll do great in Vegas. 2 of the biggest surprises I experienced in Vegas last year was: 1. New tables have slick cloth, and English did NOT grab off the rail. That inside English that you played from the 2 to the 3 @29:00 may not work as well as you think. 2, New diamond tables were lightning fast.

When will you be in Vegas? Drew
Awesome break and run! Yeah i hear you on that leave tho, it NEVER happens that you get a good look at a ball from the suit that you pocket so many balls on. 21:56 Lee got one over on you here. He kicked into that 10 ball and fouled, you should have taken BIH (and honestly, he should have owned up to it in fair competitiveness).
I KNOW! Can you believe it !? Check again at 21:56, he grazed the 13 on the way to the rail, he’s good! Thanks a lot man!!
@@drewvonporte My vision must be worse than I thought, I completely missed that somehow! Regardless, you still got the game so all good there. Really good match too, he stepped it up pretty good on the 9 ball segment! I need get in some 9 ball sometime, I'm sure my skills are starting to lag there. I'm in a small area and most of my fellow players are the gambling type; 9 ball isn't a game they care much to play. The way your opponent was winning those games has a lot to do with that. On the plus side, most of them have wallets that are bigger than their skill set...and even that's not usually the case anymore when it's time to go home

@@drewvonporte Yeah it does. However the local sites don't have it and while the com does ship to EU shipping cost and customs add up. But lets' see, I may get it anyway.
Great vid man! I've learned to _rarely_ hold, it depends so much on cloth and the minute amounts of vertical spin / changes of stroke that in tight situations, it's more likely sending it will get you shape. I've played a couple games recently on a UK table, with their wool cloth, and holding on these is a breeze tho! Oh and unrelated: I think you used the word "tangent" a couple times while there were no tangents to be seen.
I agree! Is that why the brits hold the cue ball so well in their 8-ball matches?!?!? WOOL?! 😂😂😂😂 (and the tiny cue ball) Yes, sorry, I’ve addressed my “tangent” vocabulary several times in the comments 🤦🏻♂️ it won’t happen again. I was egregiously misusing the term 😅

@@drewvonporte keep it up, everything looks good, great graphics, especially the position lines.
I've only watched about 1 minute but you asked what they could do better. This is something that most players will miss but the first person has a much better stroke. An element of the stroke that is paramount is a pause at the back of the stroke before you strike the ball. Weaker players will have a see-saw action where they feather the ball a few times and then draw back and shoot forward in one, hurried, action. A seasoned player with a good stroke will feather a few times then draw back, at the back of the stroke they will pause slightly, and then shoot forward it a single motion. I absolutely guarantee that no matter what level of player you are if you develop this technique as a natural part of your stroke you will improve your aim as well as your cue-ball control. A word of caution, players trying to practice this will at first feather, draw back and pause, then draw back slightly then shoot forward. This action ruins the gain from pausing and so reallly pay attention to what you are doing. So, back to the question, what can you notice wrong? The Second player needs to work on his stroke. Speaking of stroke, at about 3.23 your are demonstrating a shot trying to sink the 2 and get position on the Black. If you watch your own stroke you shoot and move the butt of the cue to the Right as you are striking the ball... Bad habit, I would work on that...
This is great feedback! Personally, I don’t feel like my mechanics are strong enough to teach that sort of stuff here… at least not yet! That being said, I’m seeing what you mean in my stroke and it’s something I’m going to look into 👀 I’m sure Alex and Mike’s stroke isn’t perfect yet either, as they are 4’s and still evolving their stroke each week, but that’s a good look! Regarding the pause, I was always taught the pause wasn’t always a requirement. Some players have a big pause (Neils, Melling), while some barely pause. I’ve personally gone back and forth with how much of a pause I use… Most of all, thanks for this valuable feedback !💎
@@drewvonporte I'd like to address something that you said, that you don't "always" have to have a pause. That advice is difinitively wrong. It is true that there are some shots that are so easy that you can have a poor stroke and still get away with it but if you want to get good your stroke should be the same for every single shot, it should be reflex and you should never never deviate from it. The pause, and I absolutely will guarantee this, will 100% improve your aim as well as your control of spin and weight. The length of the pause is not important, it could be a Tenth of a Second or a Second or Two. The point is to pause. I'll spare you the phsiological explanation but just practice it and you absolutly will notice a differance in your %success. If you're playing APA and coaching, remind your players to pause as part of your advice. I understand the idiotic nature of the handicap structure of APA and to some degree it is prudent to not advance too much but that said, every single player who wants to get good should make this habit an integral part of EVERY stroke. To cement this idea I will challenge you to find a video clip of any successful player, pool, snooker, 3-cushion billiards, whatever you like and see if you can find one player that is reasonably successful that doesn't pause on their stroke. All good players do it, Why do you suppose that is? It is because it works. With all due respect whomever told you that you don't 'always" have to do that is an idiot. As I said, your stroke should be the same every single time no matter what shot you are taking.
first shaft i tried was meucci first on a meucci then on my huebler, after i bought an original 314 about 20 yrs ago and it changed my world. now i shoot with a tiger and wow. have tried many carbon fiber and dont like the thunk with a ping sound. no feel to them imo.
Ah the 314 man ❤️ That cue ALSO changed my life! I don’t seem to notice the ping and thunk, idk why, on my Revo 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe I’m used to it! Not familiar with Tiger??
Great video. I have a 9 ball channel that I do with my phone. I don't have a camera or a computer so I don't edit. I'm in the APA in the northern Kentucky league and my team is " High Flyers "
That’s awesome! I’ll check it out!! Thanks for the feedback STICKROD!!! 👊🏼👊🏼
Also prefer 8 over 9 ball, but probably for other reasons. When I win at 8 ball I've pocketed my share, at 9 ball on my skill level I can win with hitting a single stroke and that kinda feels not like a win. But that hopefully changes over time.
I used to feel like that about 9-ball, but I’ve kind of changed my perception of the game a little. Once you get past 5-ball in a run, the pressure is on, and you almost *have* to get out (or switch to a safety game). THAT is the game. So if someone fails at that, the loss should come! Almost as though: the game isn’t about running 9 balls, its about running the last 3 or 4. But- that’s just how I try to view it! The patters in 8-ball are more interesting to me.
Definitely should have played that 10 rail first early in the rack, your opponent also missed an opportunity by not playing the 7 with ball in hand. He also should have opened with the 2 in the side, probably could have run it out from there. Also, not a fan of not using the 5 as a key ball for the 8
I agree. If rail first for the 10 WAS an option, I feel like i may have taken it there, idk. Hard to say from this angle, and I wasn’t playing smart/good in the first few racks so I’m completely untrustworthy there ha! 😅😅
Man. I'd love to see you play my team captain. If you're worried about this guys slow shooting Zach' would royally piss you off. My god playing on the table next to him. Waiting for him to take a shot. Might as well go put some in jukebox, order some food, grab a beer, take a nap. eventually he'll move the @#$@#$ out the way.
Haha Rob wasn’t playing that slow here, I was just really getting in my own head and making it worse. Like I said in the video, like, I’ll start to rush my own shot… like when you aggressively pass someone in the grocery store with your shopping cart…. And it totally starts intruding on focus and your normal play. It’s amateur stuff, stuff I need to overcome if I’m ever gonna get that challenge match against Fedor 😂
…. But also, no thanks 😂😂😂. Another thought about your situation: I sometimes will say, have some respect for your team! They want to shoot their match and be home before midnight! He better be playing last at least, so most of the team can go home first 😂😂😂
4 would be the last shot before I would shoot it. (personally I wouldn't class 5 as an easy shot - for me it would be low %).
I can appreciate that!
I have heard of this game from others as well and just purchased it to play with my league mates on practice night because it can really be a better teacher than drills and more fun. It also helps to have an objective rather than just mindlessly playing heads up in practice. Pool is supposed to be fun so shout to this guy for creating this and you for bringing a little attention to it in the community. Great video,
It’s a lot of fun. The expansion is DEF harder, though the original pack is no slouch
You need to combo more balls and banks
Crazy talk!! 😂
For Alex's shot if I was making the stripe ball I would make sure to go two rails to get back on the last stripe ball but honestly I'd tried to play safe somehow a kick shot. For Mike's shot I would obviously go two rails to get back to the 7 for position
It’s tough to play safe that far away, especially with her 1-ball hanging in the side!….. but I feel you! The shot was BAD juju from the jump! It wasn’t until I set it up myself and looked at how thin it was and how far it was that I was like “………!” Thanks for the sub! I’m curious, do you watch pool matches at all too? Or just in it for the interesting position situations?? I’ll be doing both but I’m trying to get a feel!

Hi Drew! I really like this style of video particularly for 8-ball decision making. I hope you make more like this! Maybe one on safety battles? -Josh
I’d love to!! Thanks for this feedback!!
Good that you can look back at such matches with a positive mood.
I can’t tell you how much I just wanted to delete this footage… I wasn’t sure how “entertaining” it is to see terrible pool 😂 but I don’t wanna just delete my losses! It’s only fair I show the bad nights too! …… I also waited like 2-3 weeks to do this one to let the wound heal 🤕 thanks for the feedback!
@@drewvonporte Glad you shared it with some humor in the end! The entertaining part comes from your commentary, which along with the full length gameplay is relaxing to watch. And concerning the education part if I want to watch 'perfect' pool there are enough top notch tournaments streams out there, for me actually seeing and having critical discussed also 'less optimal' gameplay get's me better understand the better choices.
Without English I stop at spot 3 before I go up and back down table.
That’s fair! It started getting pretty dicey after that 😳 Thanks for the input!!
my lord your playing in a bar in obviously a bar league. i watched the vid to see a "shark" as in a money player. this guy is standing 4 ft away. the chalking incident your boy did a fair call but you guys need to be able to deal with every distraction there is. you talk about shooting tournaments but distracted by these little things? the cap guy is a poor shooter and any shooter should have run through him regardless.
They don’t call it “sharking” because of their pool skill! 😂😂 Haha that’s fine man, that’s why I asked your input! I think most of us in any organized league play expect a certain standard/respect… but not everyone does clearly! Thanks for your input!
Holy smokes we can tell the difference in the 4/8 and 1/9/whitey lol. Great jump shot. That 6th match 5 to the 6 lol, made me think of your hold vs send it video...and then get lucky bouncing the ti****s on the side not to scratch. Your opponent was a good shot and has a very good stroke so good win. Keep up the great content
I deserved the 7-ball mistake immediately after 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️. No he’s a really good shot, was a little taken aback by how we started… after that 8-ball rack I was like “Oh Sh**!” Thanks man! I’m very happy with the quality of this video and aiming to keep it at this level 💪🏼
Just found your channel and glad i did. I'm a newbie SL4 and just learning some spin and position play. I was wondering if you could state which type of spin you are using when you are using some. I have a hard time seeing where you're aiming on the cue ball sometimes. Keep up the great work!
This is great! I’m glad you’re finding something useful! I don’t use a TON of spin, but when I do (and it’s relevant) and I show it on the channel, I will typically mention it, and I like to use a BROWN line and a BROWN arrow showing which way the spin is affecting it off the rail. This is good conceptually why the spin is doing what it’s doing, if you ask me, and is more important than, say, EXACTLY how many “tips” left or right or whatever. You tell me what you think!! To see what I mean maybe a little clearer, I’d check out my latest video on Position Play, where I show that line. Sometimes I’ll show a cue ball, but personally I find it a little disorienting showing the cue ball strike point unless the camera is directly over the poolplayer’s shoulder. Thanks for joining and do keep up with feedback so I can offer anything I can here!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
isn't the tangent line 90 degrees from the shot line? the tangent line looks less than that here.
It is, yes! I addressed this in another comment, but maybe I should pin one at the top :/ For whatever reason, I've always just called the cue ball's path the "tangent line". I learned a lot later in my pool life that the tangent line is very specific and a fixed line. Since people are actually gonna watch this (lol 7k! I can't believe it!), I need to tighten things up. I don't want to confuse people... My apologies!!! Thank you for your feedback, and I absolutely welcome comments like this!
@@drewvonporte no worries! you're doing an amazing job! When you're editing the videos you could add the tangent line in a different color maybe? that way people who don't understand what it is can visually see it.
@@imanoobtuber awesome thanks !!! Personally, I don’t “like” the tangent line itself. I feel like it’s not common for the cue ball to take the path of the tangent line, as it usually requires stun or pounding at shots, idk. Sometimes I get worried I’ve gone a little too Bob Ross with all the colors and lines, so I’m hesitant to add another for posterity? Idk. BUT- I will address it when it’s important!! Thanks again for feedback! I’m still figuring out a lot 🤙🏼🤙🏼👊🏼
@@drewvonporte totally understand the first paragraph. for new players though they do need to understand it as when you add follow or draw you need a point of reference first. Lots of new players in my league have zero idea of what it is and become bewildered when their draw or force follow shots didn't get the cue ball where they wanted it to go. Then you explain the tangent line and voila, it starts to click for them.
I’m going to start thinking more about this and the tangent line. Really
The first instance I can let go as a lack of awareness. The second time he approached the table and the chalking crap, he absolutely knew what he was doing, in my opinion.
I can appreciate that, being that you have no context on his behavior apart from this 😅... Thanks for chiming in !!
I really like this angle of the camera, to see the progression from your first video is amazing. Looks like you are getting back in stroke and vision as well since coming back to pool.
It comes and goes Lem! I don't have time to practice a ton, especially since I mess with making these videos with a lot of my spare time! Thanks a lot man, I do feel like I'm playing better than I ever have before though, albeit not Fargo 700 like some of my subscribers :(
We all have nights like this. We analyze, rush shots and just get in our own head. What works best for me is focus on following through the shot, once you get a ball or 2 down it can change the whole match for me. Everyone has their own process. Great video to show it doesn't always go our way.
I had a match last night (it is on tape ! Coming eventually!), where I was down like a mofo, and had to find a way back and mentally bring it together (several beers in 😅)... This game is insanely mental. Which is why "pool hustling" is such a thing! They play the mental game way more than the pool game.....
caught me off guard with one of those opening lines🤣
LMAO I just went back to listen 🤦🏻♂️.... jfc....
At 3:12, that isn't the tangent line. The tangent line is always a direct 90° line perpendicular to the pocket line you are shooting the ball on. You're probably referring to the natural rolling cue ball path. Telling players that you are showing the tangent isn't correct at all. This could confuse a lot of beginning players when trying to learn the actual tangent line when stunning the ball and trying to utilize it for cue ball control. Good video though.
Exactly.

New to your channel. Helpful to understand or somewhat comprehend options. Potting the OB and placing (parking) the CB seem to be the biggest issues. Creativity might be next. Great job!
I always tell my players to get really good at potting before you start to really unwind position play. From experience, I can assure you this game becomes INCREDIBLY frustrating when you know what you need to do, but you just miss more than you want to..... but yes! Let's get creative!! Thanks for coming in ! I've got some cool stuff coming 💪🏼👊🏼
