Thanks for putting the full performance on the start of the video
No problemo!
I've listened to this fabulous recording about ten times today, and my most recurrent, and exuberant, sensations, are the wonderful allusions to Central/Eastern European, especially Slavic, dance forms, with all their intoxicating syncopations and bivalent modal sensibilities. (Dvorak's dances are swaying in the background.)
On top of the blistering smart analysis, this is the most gorgeous recording of this capprichio on YT.
Thank you, the recording is from Jane Coop: czcams.com/video/EucEx7hYV3U/video.htmlsi=BOhxVOut4Wl-jrRk
There’s no way the second phrase Mm. 3-4 is in a minor. It’s definitely in E.
Well I think definitely is not a good word to use for this composition here ;)
When I “woke up” to these piano works some 30 yrs. ago, I couldn’t get enough of them. As a percussionist, I was thrilled to hear such rhythmic complexity beneath the gorgeous harmonies. I feel like I can hear Brahns’ unique, “3D” intelligence in this music. IMHO. Great vid-thx!👌
That's so cool! I can relate, such a gem... Thank you for the kind words
3-D intelligence is a perfect descriptor for Brahms!
Excellent analysis. Thank you!

missed oppurtunity to call it the "devil's lick"
Hahaha good one!
Prokofiev would never have been able to create a coherent piece of music, why would you think he could have made this?
Brahms using random harmony. Brahms being incompetent yet again. Anyways, here's a wrong and useless analysis of his random noise.
Have you listened enough Brahms music? Because you cant simply say something like that about a composer as great as Brahms just because you don't like him, this coming from a person who is not exactly a big fan of Brahms, but I cannot deny his genius.
@@cebolla4680 you cannot deny his genius because you don't think for yourself and just listen to the words of others and agree with them by default. Brahms is a genius in the eyes of the modern artist, in the eyes of a cultist, in the eyes of someone so ridiculously ignorant to music, that they refuse to accept the fact that music in fact can be poorly composed. Brahms's only contribution to music is making the standards for success ever lower. His pieces are completely incoherent garbage. He writes like an amateur, though maybe not like an amateur of the modern day, who are somehow worse than him. The only thing upholding brahms's genius is a century of dogma. Any competent musician can see past his showmanship and vanity. His pieces have no form, his pieces are filled with contrapunctal errors, his pieces are not music. Just random, occasionally musical noise.
@lolbruh1170 First of all, its so ridiculous to insult anyone when discussing about a composer in a CZcams video. And then, no, I think that because, unlike you, I have spent time listening and analyzing his music. His first symphony isn't called "Beethoven's 10th" by nothing. Go and listen his 2nd piano concerto, his clarinet sonatas, his intermezzos (for example op76 no4, or op117 no 2). Its undeniable that he was a master of orchestration, and was able to compose music of huge complexity.
@@cebolla4680 I know his first symphony isn't called "Beethoven's 10th" for nothing. Because it's also completely incompetently composed, just like Beethoven's symphonies. Maybe go listen to some mozart quartet or scriabin's 5th symphony. I know full well of Brahms's "music"(noise). He cannot compose for the life of him. Honestly, the "beethoven's 10th" probably isn't very accurate considering that brahms somehow is so many leaps and bounds worse than that guy. Anyways, instead of receiving your opinion of whether or not brahms is a good composer from someone equally incompetent like Schönberg, use your own ears, be repulsed, and form your own negative opinion of him. The "complexity" in his "music" is literally just adding excessice voices in his counterpoint and excessively thickening every chord to make it as incoherent as possible. His form is completely incoherent, he has only once or twice even composed a semi coherent phrase, letalone a piece of music. He is complete trash.
what u think of my music
brilliant analysis! I also fell in love with this piece on first listen. the climax is so beautiful and full of humour. very insightful to understand the harmonic workings and especially brahms' use of less common chords (mostly +6 chords) as pivot harmonies!
Thank you very much for the kind words, also congratulations on your acceptance to the conservatory!
@@TimondeNood thanks!
Love when the counterpoint enthusiast is awful and completely ignorant at counterpoint
Amazing video man! Congrats! Just a little detail that probably you didn’t even notice. When you mention the enharmonic chord ( Italian Augmented 6th Chord in F Major = Dominant in F Sharp Major), you say E double sharp when it should be just E sharp!😌 Once again great job with making this video!
Oh yes, good that you spotted it, I even did it wrong on the score example afterwards! Also, thank you for the kind words!
@@TimondeNoodThat’s when I spotted the small mistake; when the score example was played I immediately thought ‘this doesn’t sound like a dominant seven chord, something’s wrong’. Still an amazing video of course, I’m subscribing!
Thank you, yes I didn't notice it even while editing... probably I had already too much on my mind and wasn't paying close attention anymore while rechecking the complete video! Thank you for the sub, more content and compositions soon!
Could you do more Brahms piano pieces? Op. 118 2 and 3, or op, 117 2? Love your videos!
Hi Pedro, Op.118 no 2 is really one of my big favourites. However, this guy already did quite a good analysis, go check it: czcams.com/video/u0JL85m-r8w/video.html Regarding the others op 118 no 3 and op 117 no 2, I think we have a similar taste cause these pieces are always in the back of my head :D. So some day probably they will be featured on this channel. For the moment being, I have 4 analysis videos and a lot of compositions to finish, so you won't see them upcoming months. All capitals like a chav
What? I use the capitals because I don't distinguish between major and minor tonalities in my analysis...
@@TimondeNood starts piece "Amin: . . . "
I meant in the roman numerals ofc, the minor or major character is indeed indicated by those boxes or when the harmony modulates.
I have read that the subject from the fugue in g minor Book 1 of Bach's appears in this cantata? I can't quite find this subject entry anywhere (D Eb G F# G), could you please clarify this? Or maybe just a wikipedia thing
Hi Yingjie Su! So this is the opening sonatina from the cantata. The G minor theme actually is more or less present in another part of the full cantata: czcams.com/video/snqxsCFY48U/video.html If you go to this performance at 8:05 we hear the motive, with similar rhythm, C - D-flat - B-flat - E - E - F. If you transpose this a whole step up, you get D - E-flat - C - F# - F# - G, this is almost the same ;)
@@TimondeNood thank you so much! You know this piece so well, the analysis was very helpful!
Thank you, I try to do the best I can :)
My problem with the analysis is the Devil bit. One assumes that it derives from the title. Unfortunately, this is the French title, and if anyone knows anything about its origin, please respond. Opus 4 contains four pieces, each of which were originally published with Russian subtitles. This piece was given the subtitle “navashdyenya” (forgive the Western alphabetization) which translates as “delusion” or “hallucination.” No Devil here. The analysis would therefore depend on the validity of the obviously mistranslation from Russian to French, I.e. who sanctioned it and/or came up with it. Was is the composer himself? I never found anything about it, but then I confess not to doing any sort of in-depth research. And fyi - I tried sight reading this - it’s an absolute nightmare. The dissonance is intense and leaves one little to grab hold of and focus.
This is only an interpretation and a bit an entertaining one as you might have noticed. As you can see in the subsequent (full) analysis video, I actually say that I prefer to call it the Devil's theme, there is no absolute reason for this, just personal taste. Also the tritone (devils interval) is quite important in this piece, that's why perhaps people started to call it a Diabolic suggestion. Also an analysis is always subjective, so I get that you have problems with it, I have too ;)
Very tough piece to play
Indeed, but @laurentboukobzapianiste delivered well!
@@TimondeNood Agree, great performance.
One thing is please play the segments/fragments as you explain them. A video about a musical piece without playing the bits is frustrating (especially for the visually impaired). Thank you for the excellent content.
Thank you, I do this in some of my recent videos, for example: czcams.com/video/6xRFCqGYCLw/video.htmlsi=dP1TCOMhcodSCOmR Thanks for pointing out!
This would double the length of the video. It’s not clear that would make it more accessible.
It's not a necessity to replay every single fragment. I'm now editing a new video about one of Ravel's works and it's just way better to replay some fragments for the listener.
Very interesting again, thank you for your videos!
What's so "rondo" about this movement? More like a ternary form.
Rondo and ternary form can be close together depending on how the rondo sections are arranged. Here is why most people would call this a rondo: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_No._11_(Mozart)
I dont like proko
To how much of his music have you listened? I cannot say I like everything he wrote, but some pieces are truly amazing and I think a lot of people who listen to classical would agree. Sometimes you must be willing to listen without expectations or prejudices.

what's so special about number 41?

you never entered the chords and modulations?
Have you listened to the whole analysis? Prokofiev does not think in terms of classical chords in this work. It would be pointless to force the course of the composition in a functional harmony scheme
@@TimondeNoodit’s not even that dissonant. Every note group he is using is a modal subset of a common scale close to the diatonic. A tonal map, however that fits in European classical training, would be very useful to anyone who knows chords.
I disagree. Eventhough you clearly have the chord subsets, the progressions do not follow conventional classical patterns. I see no point in naming each chord here, it just makes the analysis cluttered and moreover it distracts the student from the actual important underlying ideas

I always find these kind of piano pieces unnerving after a short time.
And that's OK I think, it is kind of meant to be so, no? And ofcourse, everybody can have their own musical preferences. I get that a lot of people won't like this, but I truly adore it. Also, music and art in general does not always need to portay elegance and beauty.

You think so? I thought that The Engulfed Cathedral was more well known?
Every chess player or classical composer are close to have "maniac" brains some day hehehehe im both of them
Prokofiev was two in one btw… both chess player and classical composer 😆
Isn’t it at the last cadence at the end (the measure before the last one) a I 64 chord instead of V 64 chord?
Morphologically yes, functionally no. American and european analysis label this chord differently. Take a look at this video: czcams.com/users/shortsdz8RxGKzxQk?si=nzX0wqJ1lubTfkmL

Simple and beautiful ;)
Great analysis! the simplicity of the theme also reminds me of Medtner's Sonata-Reminiscenza. Does anyone else hear the similarity?
Indeed, similar contours in the opening bars
Yeah. But Medtner has of course more original harmonies and the structure is kinda more complex, well because Medtner was using more the philosophy - More is more.
Lol, I hope you don't believe that yourself. Perhaps you should think twice before passing judgment based on one composition by Sibelius. IMO the framework of a composition determines whether you should use a lot or little material. So no, more is not necessarily more.
