Bach Analysis [BWV 106]

  • Another music theory video, this time on Bach's Sonatina from the BWV106 Cantata "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit" (also known as "Actus Tragicus"). I point at some basic aspects of Bachs approach to composing and his use of harmony. I hope you can learn something from this.

    I have read that the subject from the fugue in g minor Book 1 of Bach's appears in this cantata? I can't quite find this subject entry anywhere (D Eb G F# G), could you please clarify this? Or maybe just a wikipedia thing

      Hi Yingjie Su! So this is the opening sonatina from the cantata. The G minor theme actually is more or less present in another part of the full cantata:

      If you go to this performance at 8:05 we hear the motive, with similar rhythm, C - D-flat - B-flat - E - E - F. If you transpose this a whole step up, you get D - E-flat - C - F# - F# - G, this is almost the same ;)
