Pilots view JFK Take Off A340 Timelapse with cruise Star-Lapse
Join us on the flight deck of an A340-600 departing New York's John F Kennedy airport (KJFK/JFK), departing on Runway 31L on the SKORR4 SID with YNKEE transition.
Two GoPro's have been set up including the moving map data from Jeppesen Flight Deck Pro X.
After we get in the cruise I set up my Canon 6D and do a star time-lapse over the North Atlantic Ocean. How many meteors can you spot as we fly over the ocean?

Great view of our landing at London Gatwick when it was blowing a gale as a storm system swept through the UK. Crosswinds of up to 50 knots on the approach and windshear in the final 400 feet of the approach. Just another day in the office, trying to get our passengers from A to B as safely as possible.

Real question.. if you were to fly half way around the world, wouldn’t the stars appear to travel upwards as the plane goes around the earth? Why do they not?
@@FanOfTheSky yea good question. It all depends on which direction you travel. The stars will only travel upwards if you fly east, like the sun, the stars rise from the east and set in the west. If you travel north or south the stars would appear to rotate around the poles. There are good examples of this in pictures if you google “star trails” Hope that helps!
@@EverydayAirlinePilot That does, but what you're talking about is the predictable path of the stars we see regardless of air travel. What I'm speaking to is independent of the normal star paths.. I'm saying by nature of the plane moving around a sphere, the stars would progress upwards as the plane dipped down and around a portion of the globe. And you're correct about google, the space view does show the stars would travel upwards, but I see very little movement as the plane travels around the earth in the videos I've watched.. I"m not saying it's flat, but I see why so many people are.

Why aren’t the stars rotating over head as you fly? Wouldn’t that happen on a globe?
If you were travelling east they would rise quickly, west they would set slowly, north and south would turn around the poles. So it all depends which direction we travel. With lots of turns on our trips it affects how it looks on these time lapses

Why are the stars not moving up.. More sideways than anything. No matter what direction if you're following the curvature of the earth the stars should move up.. Google earth shows the same. Can you explain why google is wrong?
Depends which direction you are travelling. Just like the sun. They rise from the east. Set in the west and north or south they will rotate around the polar stars

@@benmrgamw681 probably an effect of the warp stabiliser effect I put on the video to smooth out the turbulence and the fact we are constantly turning in the aircraft

Seek and you will find ;)
Only some of the objects visible in the video are meteors. Meteors typically last a second or less, so any object visible in multiple frames of a time-lapse video will be some other phenomenon, likely satellites or aircraft. The instantaneous streaks are likely meteors.

I'm hoping you're just having fun with this. The A320 has a "note taking" capability on its data entry system, where a pilot can write a memo and send it to various agencies (like Flight Operations at home base, etc.). All this pilot did was to type in several lines of data (the typing system has several pages to type on -- like Page 1, Page 2, etc., of a MS Word document. The two "ENG" buttons being pushed are the Engine Anti-Ice switches which turn on the de-icing system for each engine . . . what you see has absolutely nothing to do with a chemical spray capability -- don't be a lemming.
