There is a channel I watch on CZcams called Our Self Reliant Life. They have built an earth bag dome and their roof is not only cob but manure and lime mix. It isn't finished yet but the areas that she has applied the manure and lime wash has held up through their monsoon season. Just food for thought.

I had a problem with creosote on a chimney breast. I used Zinsser B-I-N Stain killer (Red Tin). Brilliant stuff. Stops most stains reappearing. Get it in Screwfix etc. Best of luck and well done so far.

With a back burner or a surround burner it is vital that the logs you use are very very dry as they will burn at a lower temperature compared to a standard stove or fire. This results in more creosote in the flue and a greater risk of fire. It is much cheaper to buy wood freshly cut and for you to store it in your barn or outbuilding for three years or more than it is to buy seasoned wood. In rural places you should be able to find a farmer or similar who can bring your wood each year. I suggest you stick to hardwood rather than pine as pine takes longer to season, burns fast and at a lower temperature. Be sure to have the flue inspected by a professional before you use it. He or she will give you a safety certificate and peace of mind. If you are not sure about spending a few euros on it, look up flue fire on here.

We had a 200 year old farm house in Cornwall and had an aga for heating and hot water and cooking - it was beautiful and warmed the whole house!

I know things are expensive but that fireplace and whatever you do with it will become the focal point of the whole house so if it were at all possible to open it up and even have your aga partly in that space and not sticking out entirely it would be lovely. Slso with the tar / creoste and leak maybe its best to just do a big job now and you never have to redo it

Hi, I would like you to read up on the possibility of health implications if your old creosoted timber is not fully sealed, against the cost of removing it. . Secondly and being positive , why don't you add a CAD app to your computer then Louise you can show Emily and computer image of any of your ideas and it will help her see how things will look when they are done. .😊

Scary the pin thing - but get some inter-dental brushes for emergencies!The pin would surely show up on an X-Ray if they did it properly and I am sure they did. Main thing is you are all good Louise!

Rain is common in NZ too- but I just heard via a podcast that due the frequency/energy aspects of our planet all countries at this time of the Cosmic Cycle called the precession of the Equinoxes - rain will come at odd times.Precession of Equinoxes happens once about every 26,000 -25,000years!
