Remote cottage update and why we are NOT looking in Portugal for property.
As most of you will know we recently purchased a remote cottage in Ireland and whilst we are waiting (desperately hoping) for it to go through, we drove our campervan down to southern Portugal to look at off grid homesteads we may be able to renovate as our winter escape.
However, we currently STILL don't have the cottage, 4 months after making the offer, and, we've not even began to look at off grid property in Portugal yet. This weeks video gives an update on why, and where we are with it all.

Never boring, ever 🙃 I'm really looking fwd to seeing you back in Ireland and am glad you've rested up and restored your good selves. A tip for the crossing? Peppermint tea. The warmth will help soften your heaving stomach muscles, it's an ease for nausea and... it will taste marginally better on it's return. Blessings to you all.

I never knew about this caterpillars 🐛 either, horrible little buggers….. Keep up the good work ladies, it’s really nice seeing a channel that’s not ramming down our throats how many freebie’s they are getting. We all know it’s annoying when that happens because the rest of us end up having to buy the goods.

Yes definitely do a rebuild! You could build a doggie bed sleep bed that converts to a shower when needed. You could make waterproof walls that lift up from inside the dog bed into the shower walls and folds back down when back to the bed.

I waited nearly too long and now I have been stationary for 6 weeks, doing the same you are doing - mainly taking care of my health and fitness. Ladies, I have just caught up with the news about Mandy's diagnosis and watched a bit of Johns video explaining things. Thank you for supporting them at such an awful and stressful time. I realise the videos lag behind life so this was probably a while ago but it was lovely to hear that you had been helping them
I used to spend up to 2 weeks on large boats at a time and found that giving out fresh ginger for seasick passengers to suck on worked wonders.

We live south of Bordeaux on the Bassin d'arcachon and every year at carnaval time the processionary caterpillars arrive for a couple of months. It's awful what they do to dogs and cats but it's nearly as bad for humans. My friend stood on one and spent 6 weeks looking like Marilyn Monroe with the big sunglasses and a headscarf, her face was so disfigured. Our neighbours son was hospitalised for 3 days, he was 11 and his whole body swelled up like a balloon because he played on a pine tree that had fallen in a storm and it was covered in caterpillars. After these horror stories we walked our Golden every day where there were caterpillars and he never went near them and went as far as to step over them, he must have had a sixth sense luckily. Great you're having a chill time it's good for you. In France it takes from 3 to 6 months to buy a property, we've done it a few times. Enjoy yourselves that's what counts 😊😊😊
Ladies. Seasickness is not a joke. I'm a sufferer, and have been travelling between Holland and back to the UK for over 30 years, but quite a few years ago now I invested in some acupressure wrist bands. They have a button on the inside which you place over a specific point on your wrist and they work! No pills, potions or expensive remedies, just a couple of elasticated wrist bands will help.
Agreed! I was going to suggest these, but I’m glad you did! I used them on a ferry crossing from Aberdeen to Shetland in January, when plates were flying off tables it was so rough, and they worked brilliantly. Definitely recommend! Love that you girls are having a great time - enjoy xxxx

They really work. My other half used to take out divers on trips & he always had a supply of sea bands which the sufferers often refused to give back once they were back on dry land.

Put a drain hole in the floor that you can plug, use a stopper from a metal water bottle canister, and get a tray with a hole that fits exactly in the hole in the floor, and then you can pick up your shower pan put it away when you are not using it, put a plastic curtain rod up and use a black solar water bag that gets hot from the Sun, hooks in the ceiling for the curtain. No remodeling, just a few adaptations
Those caterpillars are no joke. I worked somewhere where there was an area where they are and we had to carry our dogs- they get in the paws, and human skin contact is very painful, too.
I love that you have had a chance to catch up with yourselves, if you know what I mean. You‘ve got a huge project ahead and have done so much to get to this point. Health is truly the most important. You only realise it when it‘s gone. (Don‘t worry, I got mine back)

You could always shower outdoors with a shower/privacy tent.
We bought and sold in Ireland -All went very quickly. Getting a PPS number is the very basic prerequisite to doing anything. Don’t forget that the health service is absolutely shite over there so don’t get ill 😬

Your presentation style is absolutely fabulous, don't change a thing, it's become refreshingly natural ! The Processionary Moth Caterpillars apparently just come out of the Pine trees in spring, to pupate in the ground near by; so the lines of caterpillars are searching for the perfect spot to pupate !! I was on a pine forest road in Extremadura last March, where there were so many live and run over caterpillars on the road that walking as a human was tricky, trying not to step on them, so for a dog it would have been like hell !! J
Yeah that’s what we said, they come down to bury themselves in the ground to become the moths, it’s when they come down to find their next spot that they are the issue unfortunately
for your shower--recess a shower pan with a drain in the floor. Literally in the middle of the van. Make an insert with existing flooring over a wood frame to cover shower pan when not in use. Plumbing can simply hang from the ceiling. Shower head / hose can be removable. make a simple ring of stainless steel to hold the shower curtain. My sister has that in her factory made Dodge camper van
Yes, if you do decide you really need a shower in your van Louise then this would seem to be a good idea. Then you don't lose the space permanently.
I've just decided to take mine out, two reasons. 1. it introduces steam/water/humidity thus damp into the van . 2. It makes my van seem much smaller, less airy, cuts off the 'view ' down that side of the van.

For seasickness, try Meclazine HCl (sold as Bonine in the US). I get terribly seasick, and it works great for me.
It's great to see you both having some down time, relaxing, and having time for each other. As for seasickness tablets, Lyn goes green on a wobbly paving slab so takes Avmore tablets. Hope you can get them locally if you want to try them! 😂🚐🚐🤢

My wifes condition of me doing a self build was installing a shower. It's a very small shower/toilet, but we've never looked back. We couldnt do without it. Just had a great weekend around Portumna, but Ireland and even better weather will be here when you get back. Enjoy that hot winter sun, and your time together.

In February 2022 & 23 in we did trips along the Norway coast with Hurtigruten. We learnt early that sailors drink/take ginger (in any form) to combat seasickness. There was always small glasses of it at breakfast and we always had one or two as we loved it and it certainly worked for us in extreme rough seas. If you have a nutribullet mix your own drinks to last during your trip, you need only have a small glassful a day. 😊
I know you are al ready there, but Ginger Root is excellent for motion sickness. In a tea or ginger snaps...what ever way you can get it down. I'm glad I've found your channel!

On the caterpillars even when they are dead they are toxic for the babies. We was fortunate that a vet was so close. Looking forward to the Ireland home fingers crossed. Yes we can relate to the heat but we just go to uk in summer lol take care enjoy the relaxation hugs and kisses to you all xxx

I agree. In fact I believe mental health often comes before physical health. Poor mental health is insidious and can creep up unnoticed. It’s so important to take stock of how you are feeling and to give yourself breaks and diversions. Well said Tony.

Normally, I’m not a big fan of other people’s PDAs, but you two remind me so much of myself and my beautiful better half, it doesn’t make me cringe at all. And, cards on the table, we hold hands, kiss, hug etc in public all the time, so I don’t think I can really complain, even if I don’t like it.

Sea Bands is the best brand for the wrist bands. Used for years, always carry a spare too.
I get terribly sick from flying and on boats. Dramamine really works. Get the non drowsy one. Hope you get your cottage all sorted soon!

I am not sure of pills for seasickness, or the things you put behind your ears because they make you tired. I get very seasick and many years ago it was suggested to me to buy these wristbands that have things in them that you put on the pressure points on your wrist. Not sure this is making any sense but they are almost like a wide elastic wristband. I was very leery until I use them on a fairly small boat in Alaska. It was an 11 hour cruise and the waters were rough and I never got seasick once. I guess it’s on the order of acupressure but honestly they work beautifully and you’re not getting tired from taking drugs. Those things you put behind your ears have drugs in them. I bought mine in the drugstore. Maybe that’s not what you call it over there maybe it’s a pharmacy but that is where I got mine.

oh god I did that route last October from Bilbao. Lie down for the trip, drink coke and get acupuncture bands for your wrists and take sea sick tabs - then you will be fine. Its a bit grim but you will be ok, we sailed in a storm that didn't help

Hi we lived in castelo branco, for a year,off grid.the heat was horrendous our river dried up,so no water,we also met the caterpillars and the worst thing was the poison centerpide,I trade on one,lucky it didn't bite,then we woke with one crawling on us in bed,so scary,scorpion to.We had no idea.The people are lovely though.

Best cure for sea sickness... fly... let Emily take the ferry with the van and animals and meet them at the port. Other than that I can only recommend meclizine. It was what the cruise ships I worked on would hand out to seasick passengers.

Kind of you to reply. It would be a joy to meet up, but alas we are heading off west tomorrow heading toward Portimao. We are retired and left the Uk end of December and need to get our skated on, since we need to be back in the UK (Stratford-upon-Avon) by mid March. We also have the 90 day rule to think of which is such a pain.
Life is a wonderful thing and we wish you well in this most exciting of all journeys.

I accepted an offer on my house about the same time as you had yours accepted in October, and I'm also still waiting for it to complete! Looks like another couple of weeks and it'll be done hopefully! And then I'll be living on the road in a motorhome, and I cannot wait! I really hope you girls get your dream home soon! When Elayna from Sailing La Vagabond was having issues with sea sickness she used Reliefband. It’s a wearable motion sickness device. another,piece of advice is when picking the cabin, choose a low floor, and in the center,of the boat. Not stern, or bow. You feel the movement in those areas the most.
Don't change Fannie! You will be busy with the cottage winter or summer, it doesn't matter. And Fannie is perfect!

Sea sickness 🤢going on our first cruise I was also worried about crossing bay of Biscay and was not going to take any chances ...I wore the wrist bands., used natural patches which you place near your belly button and snacked on ginger biscuits managed 6/8 swells crossing the bay with only mild feelings of light headedness .,..had some seaband pills with me just in case but never needed them
