The Largest America’s Cup Boats Ever | 2010 Deed of Gift Match Documentary
Larry Ellison & Ernesto Bertarelli. Everyone has an opinion on them. For better or worse they changed the America's Cup forever... [cont. below]

Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts relationship would go on to form SailGP.
Whilst, Bertarelli & Alinghi have recently returned to America's Cup racing after an 11 year hiatus.
The 2010 America's Cup build-up was dominated by lawyers (and was arguably more acrimonious than the 1988 cup). The years of fighting would come to an end at this Deed of Gift match between just two teams. Another similarity with 1988 is the use of a wing sail by one of the teams.
This cup also marked the transition of the America's Cup away from monohulls, too multihulls. And it saw the first & only trimaran to sail in the America’s Cup.
This was the greatest sailing rivalry between billionaires ever seen. Both owners sailed on their boats. Bertarelli as helm (until Peyron tookover) and Ellison as afterguard.

Catamaran vs. Monohull | The controversy of the 1988 Americas Cup

Australia has lost interest in the Americas Cup. It was a contest between a nation's sailors and boat design funded by yachting obsessed multi millionares. Now it's like F1 auto racing on water where the boats and crews represent a country in name only. NZ started this trend by attempting to be more litigious than the Americans!!!

I must have aged 10yrs during that last race. Like most of Australia we stayed up all night to watch that final thrilling tacking duel, hoping against hope that the lightly built Australia 2, with it's inverted "Spitfire-wings" keel could somehow stay together and reach the finish line in front. The Gods must have been smiling on us that day, especially since they took A2 out for a sail the next day after winning The Cup and the mast snapped on the first tack. That would have been the end of us but somehow it stayed together during race 7 until victory was ours. It remains, to this day, our country's finest sporting achievement.

Dumb move by NZ, they were going back in time to the era of the large J class boats and retarding instead of advancing sailboat design. A bitter pill to swallow but the NZ team was outmanoeuvred by team USA off the water. Can you imagine a half dozen or more challengers having to build those large boats?

If you live by the sword you die by the sword. NZ used a loophole to challenge in a huge boat and a short time frame in the hope that USA could not build a similar boat in enough time to learn how to be competitive. Instead USA also used a loophole to defend in a catamaran. Then Kiwis complained because they had been beaten at their own game - exploiting loopholes !

As a proud American and sailor, truly, of all the countries Americans typically love, Canada, England, Mexico, France, etc etc, Australia was the least stinging to lose the Cup to. It still stings, but bygummit Australia! Like losing a footrace to a brother. The Cup has always been a blend of boat and skill. Aussies had the skill and the boat and the win was well deserved.

There was a camera set up on a hotel next to the USA compound in San Diego, just happened to be watching when they brought out the wing sail, loaded it sideways on the boat, then raised it on the water, then proceeded to sailing up and down SD Bay, dwarfing everything in their path for the next hour. It was an epic display of power and control. I knew right then it was all over for Alinghi

As others have said, this was an extremely one-sided account of a situation in which nobody covered themselves in glory. Fay used a legalistic, technical reading of the Deed of Gift to obliterate long-standing protocols of sporting behavior and essentially dictate the schedule and ground rules of the race from the Challenger position on short notice. His goal was an ambush, plain and simple. He won that initial legal battle because his read of the Deed of Gift was technically correct, even if unsporting. But then when Connors and the San Diego crew effectively said "Well fine, if we're going to be legalistic and technical about interpreting the Deed at the expense of precedent and the sporting spirit of the agreement, we're going to all the way to the logical extreme of that approach." The catamaran was unsporting. It was unfair. And Connors behaved like a prick. But none of it happens if not for Faye's effort to ambush the Cup to press his perceived advantage. In the end, everyone really lost, including the America's Cup as a whole. Everyone looked childish and foolish, and the event was permanently diminished after all the ridiculous bickering and litigation.
