10 Bike Hacks for your Brompton
10 fresh Brompton bike hacks for you all! Let me know which one was your favorite!
Previous Bike Hacks video: czcams.com/video/zKsk3aCgzbo/video.html
As many of you know, I keep quite a few bikes in my bedroom, and one of the best ways to save some space is to put them vertically, on the wall. The downside of that, is that sometimes I miss the bike stand and end up leaving a tire mark on the wall. Luckily, we can quickly get ride of those using an eraser. You can literally just... erase the dirty spot in a matter of seconds. This hack also seems to work well for other marks, depending on what caused them.
Every now and then I need to work on bikes in my bedroom, which has a nice and clean carpet. To avoid dirty tires from touching it, I use a layer of packing wrap around them. These are very similar to food plastic wrap we have on the kitchen, just a lot easier to apply and less wasteful. Wrap a bit of film against itself at any spot to create a starting point, then continue to wrap the tire until you have some overlap. One layer should be enough to avoid making a mess. This hack was particularly useful when I was trying to find the best position to install my vertical bike stand, and wanted to test a few different positions by leaning the bike against the wall.
Moving on to hacks that are specific to the Brompton, if you have the quadlock phone mount and use your bike as a shopping cart, you can attach your shopping list to the phone mount like this. It’s held securely in place and you’ll keep your hands free for other stuff.
Moving on, if you have a bottle, but don’t have a bottle opener, well... at least you have a Brompton. Fold it up, and use the latching mechanism behind the seat post clamp to open it up. It may take a few tries until you get the hang of it, but it works like a charm.
Next, this is an Apple Airtag. It’s a tracking device made by Apple, that has become very popular with many people using them to keep track of their bike’s location. Its effectiveness to locate a stolen bike is still debatable, but one thing is for sure. It needs to be hidden away, and certainly not under your bike seat. If you have a Brompton, you may think about hiding it inside of the frame, but the metal completely cuts off the Airtag’s signal, so that’s not really an option. An alternative would be to remove the luggage block lever, place the airtag in there and put some foam to prevent it from moving around. It works like a charm. Some alternatives, that are also applicable to other bikes, would be to look for accessories that are permanently attached to the bike, ones that a bike thief would not immediately take off. By making a small cut on my handlebar bag, I’m able to hide the airtag between the layers of fabric. Alternatively, if you have a reflector like this, you may be able to open it up, hide the airtag inside along with some plastic film, and install it back on the bike. You’ll have about a year before having to replace the battery, and bike thief would never imagine there is a tracking device hidden in there.
Next, a couple of weeks ago I reviewed a Brompton bag that I thought was a bit too small for my taste. However, it would be the perfect size to use on the handlebar and leave the luggage block available for larger bags. So, I decided to remove the Brompton frame and make a new frame that’s compatible with the klickfix adapter on my handlebar. To do that, I used an aluminum rod of a quarter inch in diameter and a bench vise to make all the necessary bends. I used the klickfix adapter as a guide, and a pen to mark where bends should be made. To bend the rod with a smooth radius, I used a steel bolt between the vise and the rod on the side that I was bending towards. This is the final shape of the frame when I was done, and this is what it looks like on the handlebar. Now, all I need to do is install is back on the bag and attach it to the klickfix adapter. As you can see, now I can use it along with a larger bag on the luggage block. Both of these bags are made by Wotancraft, and I’ll leave a link to them down in the video description.

This is my main concern for buying a Brompton. I don't need it to commute to work but I would love to have a bike that's easy to take on the train and then ride to go visit castles and nature parks that are usually only accessible by car. However I can't take the bike with me into historical buildings so I would have to lock it outside. Considering how expensive they are, it would be just aweful if it got stolen. I'm not sure I if the convenience if offers outways the financial risk.

I just bought 2 Brompton C6’s at the Bleeker Street Manhattan Store. I had the worst experience imaginable with the manager of,p the store selling me the bikes. I live in Sydney Australia and NYC. Many of my road bike cycling club members in Sydney also have Bromptons. I was already sold on the bike. The manager of their flagship store in NYC is not a cyclist and made folding and unfolding the bike look awkward and difficult. She did not know the name of the Greenway, the bicycle and walking path all around Manhattan, 5 minutes from her shop. It is the most used bike path in all of the U.S. She sent me on the worst possible way to get to the Greenaway because she is not a cyclist. She made buying these very expensive folding bikes anything but a pleasure. The other employees at the shop were great but nothing compared to the Brompton store in Sydney where I originally test rode the Brompton for the first time. Everyone in that shop were very knowledgeable, professional and very friendly. The London office gave me a $100 gift certificate for the torture I endured with their totally incompetent manager of their Bleeker St store. I will not ever go back there except to get my first free tune up and cash in my $100 gift certificate. Luckily REI works on Bromptons if I have a problem in years to come

So… you’re wearing a facemask for personal health reasons but on the other hand you put your dirty bike with which you potentially drove through poop etc inside your shopping cart where other folks will be putting their groceries… nice… that’s why it also annoys me when people put their kids inside shopping carts with their shoes on. And i’m not talking about infants that are put in the trolley cart seat, but older children that are very well able to walk by themselves…

Recent Brompton owner, and very longstanding road biker used to changing tubes on 700c tires. I can usually swap out a tube on front or rear tires on those bikes in just a few minutes with a tire lever and nothing else. This is a bit daunting looking and I obviously need to practice a few times at home before I'll feel confident doing this on the road. I guess I also need to stop procrastinating and buy that Brompton toolkit. Thanks for this very helpful video. BTW, I've worked in a bike shop and, while I do occasionally use a lever to put a tire back on the rim, I've been told lots of time not to do that due to danger of pinching the tube and creating another leak.

I have since ordered a BE which will be my 1st Brompton that is due to arrive any day soon. I'm also wondering if I'm going to be able to resist taking it out for a spin as soon as it's unboxed even though the forecast here 🇬🇧 is heavy rain for the next few days.

A problem i’ve encountered is when folded and you rotate the right pedal backwards so it’s snug up against the rear tyre, the chain loosens and dangles free, the pedal then rotates back into its not snug position and the chain the pulls taught again…it’s only just started doing it so a tad annoying. The bike is clean and the chain tensioner has been taken off and cleaned thoroughly as i thought that was the problem. I wonder if one or more chain links is stiff ? Thoughts ???

I got my Brompton (C-Line 6 speed, ocean blue) last friday. It took me some time to get used to the folding process; I also wasn't aware of the fact that pulling the saddle tube all the way out will unlock the fold. But now I am already much more confident in my folding technique. What really surprised me so far is how fast I can go with this bike. You'd never believe that if you see this thing for the first time. But it's incredible comfortable to ride. The only big difference to a "normal" bike I have come across so far is that the handle bar is very narrow and it's dangerous to steer with only one hand, you really need both hands. I already took it into a bus, and kept it between my legs - incredible, such a tiny package. Update: in the meantime I had some more rides with it, I also took it from my hometown Luzern to Zürich (it's a 45 minutes train ride on a VERY crowded train). It was a sunny sunday and there already were bikes on board of the train. They have to use special bike lots where you need to hang the bike upside down, and the lots have to be booked in advance and are in great demand. With the brompton you just put it in front of you in the corridor. It's tight but it does work, even when all seats are occupied. And even it that wouldn't work you still could just stand and put it between your legs, that always works. Best would be to put it into one of the baggage lots, however putting it there naked felt dangerous as the delicate parts are put onto the ground. It think it would be best to use a protecting bag for this. Anyway, it was so great to be able to ride through Zürich with the brompton and after that, just fold it and board the train back - any train you like. While with a reservation you're bound to a specific time and the weather was unstable, so you could end up having to stay for hours in Zürich while it's raining and you have to park your regular bike somewhere outside... There really is something about the brompton that is magical. I always look forward to my next ride with it.

Well done. You made that look easy. Having said that, I probably wouldn't attempt it myself. I'm much more likely to struggle to my local bike shop and get them to do it, especially if it was a rear wheel puncture. Regarding the psi, I set both tyres to 80psi, which is what the manual recommends but I noticed you said 100 is better. This is based on experience? Thanks again.
