Our Bromptons are over 10 years old. My wife and I ride our Bromptons recreationally and take them with us all over the world. I also ride with my road bike mates who can't believe I can easily keep up with them on our long rides. We are now on our third set of tyres. No rust. They would rate as one of the best investments we have EVER made. Although many of our friends reckon we look like "dorks on storks" we smile because we know they have no idea how much enjoyment these innovative bikes have provided us in our lives. We are 73 years old!!! Our Bromptons keep us young!!!

I got my Brompton (C-Line 6 speed, ocean blue) last friday.
It took me some time to get used to the folding process; I also wasn't aware of the fact that pulling the saddle tube all the way out will unlock the fold.
But now I am already much more confident in my folding technique.
What really surprised me so far is how fast I can go with this bike.
You'd never believe that if you see this thing for the first time.
But it's incredible comfortable to ride. The only big difference to a "normal" bike I have come across so far is that the handle bar is very narrow and it's dangerous to steer with only one hand, you really need both hands.
I already took it into a bus, and kept it between my legs - incredible, such a tiny package.
Update: in the meantime I had some more rides with it, I also took it from my hometown Luzern to Zürich (it's a 45 minutes train ride on a VERY crowded train).
It was a sunny sunday and there already were bikes on board of the train. They have to use special bike lots where you need to hang the bike upside down, and the lots have to be booked in advance and are in great demand. With the brompton you just put it in front of you in the corridor. It's tight but it does work, even when all seats are occupied. And even it that wouldn't work you still could just stand and put it between your legs, that always works.
Best would be to put it into one of the baggage lots, however putting it there naked felt dangerous as the delicate parts are put onto the ground. It think it would be best to use a protecting bag for this. Anyway, it was so great to be able to ride through Zürich with the brompton and after that, just fold it and board the train back - any train you like. While with a reservation you're bound to a specific time and the weather was unstable, so you could end up having to stay for hours in Zürich while it's raining and you have to park your regular bike somewhere outside...
There really is something about the brompton that is magical. I always look forward to my next ride with it.

Only necessary change i have made on both of mine (H6R / M2L) are front hydraulic disc brakes. I commuted 80km per day for 3yrs, putting over 30,000km on my first one, so it's not a problem doing those distances. It's both reliable and durable. Really has been a life changing bike.

I bought a loaded top-end model a few years back. Yes, it was cute, clever, nice looking and well-made, but the riding experience is definitely not anything like regular cycling--it's twitchy as hell, ergonomically weird, and less efficient. These aren't negatives, as long as you plan to use the thing in its proper role: easy, low-mileage, laid-back commuting, touring, twiddling around. It's great for that kind of riding. If you want a serious long-haul or high-performance machine, avoid it.

I own a different type of fold-up bike, a Dahon, and although I truly enjoy and appreciate it ... I can see the difference in quality that has gone into the Brompton bike, which is way easier to fold-up, and cart around in fold-up position. I love how you can carry the Brompton aboard a plane and stow it above the airline seat. (Although, I would not have the strength to lift it that high. Great for you strong guys & gals.) Yet, I could easily get this aboard a bus! Perhaps, a train, too. It would
easily store in a car, with hardly any fuss. I love how the greasier parts of the bike are protected from getting onto clothing, room, and car ... when folded. Brilliant, that the air pump attaches to the bike, AND ... how the tools and spare tire are contained inside the bike. 👍 And, the carry bag that attaches on the front of the bike is also super cool as it looks like it can hold a lot. It even remains neatly fitted when the bike folds-up. I want one of these bikes, you've sold me! ❤️. That travois carrier is amazing, too. And, the lights ... oh my!

Great video! Comprehensive, very thoughtful, and well-delivered. Your love for your Brompton shines through, and you hit on all the things that make a Brompton unique and excellent for city touring -- or any kind of touring. A few years ago I moved to Pacific Grove, Ca, from a very flat town where it was easy to ride bikes. PG is extremely hilly and at first I thought my Brompton would be overmatched. I even got an electric bike to handle the hills. But lately I've gone back to my Brommie, and even though some of the hills are extremely steep and I sometimes have to push it a block or two, it's still worth it because it's just too much fun to ride and it's incredibly convenient for shopping or taking to the beach or cruising along the shoreline. When you get down to it, there's just nothing like a Brompton.

Excellent video! I have an orange ML6 and I’ve been a Brompton owner since 2014. It still get a ridiculously big smile on my face every time I ride my bike. The happiness it brings me is enough to consider the bike is paid for. But in more practical terms I have saved so much money in gasoline and parking that I can really say it paid for itself after four years of purchasing it. It’s my best investment. I know it’s pricey but believe me it’s worth every penny.
    The modifications I’ve made are:
    1. Changed the plate from 50 to 44 and it’s been the best decision ever. When I first purchased it I wasn’t sure if I needed the smaller plate but after 2 months it became clear that my pedaling just wasn’t right. I never used the 6th gear, the 4th felt too loose and the 5th too tight. I’m a woman with very short legs so I don’t know if that’s a factor but when I changed the plate WOW! It made ALL the difference! Now I use all 6 gears and my pedaling is comfortable in any of them.
    2. The grips. My original grips were the foamy ones. They were not bad but they didn’t absorbe any of the bumps on the road. So I placed some Ergon G1 grips and they are heavenly. No wrist tension, no tiredness from longer rides. These are a must!
    3. The saddle. Got a Brooks C17s (the ladies version) Cambium. It feels like I’m sitting in one of those home made swings made with a car’s tire. I had bought a leather B17 at first but after a year of use I just couldn’t find its sweet spot. I traded it for the Cambium and it way better
To those considering getting one of these wonder bikes DO IT! It will become your best transportation companion for years to come. You won’t regret it!

I got my H6L Black Edition in Flame Lacquer just weeks ago -- after watching your incredible video. I've probably watched it once a week since then. Each week I know my bike a little bit better, and after each viewing I learn something new from you. For example, I just started riding with a new bag attached to the luggage block -- and only after my last viewing of your video did I realize that I didn't have to remove the bag before every fold. Of course, that info was in your video the first time I watched it -- but since I didn't own a bag back then, that info wasn't as relevant to me back then. But it is now. Your video is the gift that keeps on giving -- and I thank you for it!

    I vouch for it all.
They’re awesome. The most ingenious folding design. The clever features like the bag carrier, and even the whole range of different bags available. The build quality: those aren’t welds, which can weaken the steel, but hand brazed joints requiring skilled tradesmen.
I think that, while there have been changes made over the years, these have always been retro-compatible.

I finally just upgraded to the H6L with titanium forks. Loving the new bike with 6-speeds and lighter weight. However, I have my old Brompton booked in for a complete refurbishment, so I will have a second bike for my wife when we go on holiday. On that note, I take this bike with me whenever I go on vacation by car. So easy to pop in the trunk. I love this brand and it is impressive that they are one of the only bike companies in the world that still manufactures their bicycles in Europe (actually the UK to be precise).

Very interesting video on the legendary Brompton folding bike. I ride a folding bike to work for years of much less clever design but still loved it. Since then I've moved to a kick scooter as they are much smaller and easier to store, etc. They also keep me free of the wrist, rear end, and knee issues that plagued me for the more than 40 years I rode upright and recumbent cycles.

  • @thomaschetwood6249

Excellent review. I have been a happy Brompton owner for 10 years: it is a 2 speed with the straight handlebars, mudguards and a bag that fits on the front block. I use it mainly for commuting a 4.5 mile journey to my office each day, so 9 miles total.
In addition to all the positive points you make about design, comfort, cargo carrying and portability - with which I wholeheartedly agree - I would add security. I live in London and have never owned and used one bike for so long. In part this is because of its utility and durability but it is also because the Brompton has never been stolen. I use it all the time because at most of my destinations, I can just fold it up and take it inside. Often I will bring a D-lock but if I've forgotten it, it doesn't matter.
P.S. Thanks for the tip about folding the bike with the bag attached: 10 years of ownership and I never knew you could do that!
P.P.S. You are much more skilful and quicker at folding yours than I am!!

I have a Brompton and worked at a bicycle shop for many years. One thing you might want to tell people is when the saddle is lowered it locks the bicycle in place. I just restarted riding again and it feels less intimidating than my mountain bike with slick tires that I used to commute. I usually carry it but rolling it looks like a better idea. I need to try that. I should have gotten it with the dynamo lighting system. I don’t have the rack so I don’t think it rolls as well but I’m not sure. I live in New York City and love the idea to ride around. Great video! It’s not too long. Thank you.

    1. What’s the name of the front bag? (It may be discontinued. If so, have you a recommendation?) Does the bag obstruct the front light when mounted?
    2. Would you advise adjusting the handle bar (M) if they are too far? (I must have short arms) would this change the integrity of the ride?

This Brompton review is fantastic! I have shared it with friends and family. It also convinced us that we need a Brompton too! Our favourite past time visiting big cities is accessing the Bixie Bikes. Now, we will bring our own bikes! Thank you for your thorough and entertaining bike review! 👍

This bike seems amazing. I have a bike now but am looking into acquiring this type of bike as an update. Your video was so informative, thorough, and helpful in my search for a foldable bike. Thank you for sharing this information. Great video.

I just bought a brompton yesterday because of your videos!
It's an oldie but she's still got so much life in it 😁

Great video, excellent review. This was a really good overview of the benefits and cool features of a Brommie. I own a Brompton Black Edition Superlight S6L-X in Rocket Red. My transport of choice in and around London, particularly in these crazy times of social distancing and avoiding public transport. Thumbs up and subscribed. Bike safe bro.

I bought mine custom order when I lived in London a few year back and easily paid it off in a year by savings not riding public transport. Took it on a folding-bike race and also on the airplane as a normal luggage piece when I went to Seattle for a week. I do like your trailer idea and need to see if I can get the toolkit, last time I heard those were out of stock, but that was a while back. I do miss riding mine in the city and noticed how more in touch you are when your on a bike and can chat with people or just stop for a quick thing. Hate driving and the hole car lifestyle, so need to get back - thanks for the video!

Thanks Raphael! I'm glad I don't need a car to move around and can rely on my bikes for everything. If I ever need a car, I'll take a ride with a friend or just take an Uber. My Brompton has already been paid off by not owning a car anymore!

I made a long thin toolkit bag for the main frame from a bit of tent material with a shoelace as a tie. This goes in first, with a folded inner tube next. The lace on both means you can get them out! A folded up black garbage sack tucks up into the short front bit of the frame in case you need to take it somewhere when its wet. You can even tear head and arm holes in the sack if you are caught out without a coat in the rain?

Great review, lots of real world observations. I got one 5 years ago and it is the best thing I have ever bought. What encouraged me to do so was I borrowed one to do DD, a 200k or 120 mile overnight bike ride. No problem, I was tired but the bike was great. They are proper bikes in every respect, I have done something like 7,000 miles on mine as a commuter and taken it all around the world. What’s not to like.

I love Brompton. I use my bike for my commute everyday. Brompton is so compact and convenient. You will know it’s very tough when you ride one.

    Excellent video, thank-you.
My Brompton is my second folding bike (the other is a 20" wheel Raleigh). My Brompton was purchased from a local dealer, an ex-rental bike about 2 years old. I mostly use it locally and take it indoors with me. It could be parked under my desk, under a table in a bar or in a friend's apartment kitchen. If I go further afield it sits easily in my (small) car's trunk. For journeys under 2 hours it is great. For longer trips I prefer my made-to-measure tourer with 700C wheels. No regrets with the Brompton. It rides like a full-size bike.

Thanks so much. I’ve been debating which folding bike to buy and your video has helped me make my decision. Also for some reason it was cool to know you are living in Portland. Welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest 🙂.
