Dutch Barge Restoration and Conversion
United Kingdom
Registrace 2. 12. 2019
This channel is about the restoration and conversion of my 1904 Dutch Barge "Neeltje". The journey from a Dutch marina back to the UK and a video diary of the work we do on her. I am certainly no expert at this given this is the first boat I have ever owned but follow us on the journey back to the water and hopefully our travels thereafter.
Our end goal is to take her back across the channel to cruise the canals of Europe. Let's see how far we get.

Relaxing isn’t it?!!
Talk about coincidences; I have a 19 m Tjalk named Neeltje (b/y 1902) here in Florida, a daughter named Caroline in France, and a former house on Schuyler Road (Maryland)... Great series!
That's great where do you cruise her in Florida? Glad you are enjoying the videos.
bravo
This would have been a fascinating episode - if I could have understood a word of it...
Well to be honest this is the first boat I’ve owned/restored, and one of the first vlogs I had ever done and I was more interested in the former than the later, but stick with it because I think I have got better over time.
Made that look quite easy, thank you.
Glad you liked the vlog. Secret is to get lucky with the weather, and have a good Pilot.👍
This is GREAT! Got 3 Kabola's - managed to get a really nice little 3.5KW for my bus. They all have backboilers. You can clean the burn chamber quite well by just burning meth's in there - it tends to heat the soot enough to combust it. The other method with the unit out in the open - is to spray with brake cleaner and ignite it. Sounds dangerous but it's contained and once the fumes have burnt off, there's no more combustion. Just spray it and torch it a few times and the surfaces are pristine. Didn't know how the reg's worked before. Will save this for reference. Cheers. HAPPY NEW YEAR
Thanks for that, glad you liked the vlog. Now watch episode 37 the pulse jet fireplace for the end of this saga. HNY👍

Ah!.... Its a Water Pump!...and Not a diesel Pump....sorry l miss read..Cheers
No you were right first time. It is the diesel pump for the central heating boiler.
@@DutchBargeRestoration Ah!.....Should the Pumps not be at a 30 degree Angle?....l have been running Eberspacher 2d's in my full time camper van for 8 years now...and think l have seen its the same for the Chinese heaters...Mine do click on start up....and again when getting back up to temperature....but quite in-between times...Cheers
@@terrylynch1259 the pump is fitted lower than the fuel tank and rising up to the boiler. Wasn’t told a specific angle to mount. It’s a funny old pump that seems to work with an electro magnet clicking for a measured dose of fuel. Not so bad as we are in France now so don’t use it much.
@@DutchBargeRestoration If you check on the Instillation instructions you will see it says to mount the pump on a 30degree angle.....You have a perfect Sound Chamber where you have it installed!.....try hanging it without touching Any Timber/Metal Work...then packing it with a loose sound deadening insulation material...l will try to find you a link re the 30 degree for the pump....Cheers...France Sounds Far Tooo Hot!🤔🌞🌞🤣

Hi both! After seeing this don't you wish you'd built a car deck? Er no, probably not.... Great vid again, always enjoying these. Regards, Nigel
You are not suggesting getting a Lancia this close to water are you?
Hi both, I've been following you right from the beginning I forget how many years ago it has been, all your journey along the k&A I loving this journey you must be brave. Keep up with the videos. Be safe all of you. Couldn't believe how big the locks are. Have fun
Thanks for that, made my day. Glad you are enjoying the journey, stay tuned, lots more to come hopefully.
Amazing, you made it look really easy! Couldn't help thinking of Captain Pugwash on a few occasions 🙂
Don't you mean Seaman Staines🙂
Good to see this Ian. Regards, Nigel
Nice to see Nathan there and a trip I always enjoy.
Nathan helped me get across the channel as well, top Pilot. Nice to hear from you Beth, haven't seen any videos lately, hope all is good with you?
@@DutchBargeRestoration Yeah, took a break before the project got on top of me, I'm sure you know what I mean ☺️, but new video today!
@@TillerQueen Good to hear it. Hang tough, one job at a time, and you will get there.
The "posh houseboat" at 5:55 is actually Astoria which is a recording studio owned by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. It's a lovely thing.
Thanks for the info, it is indeed very lovely if difficult to keep clean.
@@DutchBargeRestoration Often when I pass by somebody is outside wiping it down! Wonder if it's Dave. ☺️
Hey. I'm coming back again and again to your videos. The work on a boat never stops eh. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on paint spraying. Next year, I will be getting my barge out of the water. Is it worth investing or renting in a paint sprayer in your opinion. Do you still know what kind of paint sprayer you used and were you happy with it. All the 👌
Hi, glad to know the vids are useful. I did most with brushes and rollers, but for the barge black I used a cheap electric sprayer. I had to dilute it with white spirit to get it to go through the gun, happy with it as it made the job quicker. Will let you know makes etc when I get back to UK
@DutchBargeRestoration ah great. I was looking at an airless sprayer which would perhaps not get blocked. I'm in The Netherlands and they do it alot with rollers but it seems alot quicker and less messy to spray. That's if your sprayer does not bloke and end up becoming a hassle. That's my worry about. But I guess using both techniques is perhaps best
@@fraserstewart7359 Hi, back now and the sprayer was a Wagner Wallperfect, designed for spraying emulsion paints in houses. I'm sure an airless one would be better but a bit more expensive. The Wagner only cost £99.
Volume not consistent when you talk. Your voice too low.
Thank you wonderful video Couldn't hear you talking unfortunately due to the loud music Unfortunately I'm old and my hearing isn't what used to be. But did get the guest of it. I love to see old things restored Thanks
Thanks for that, I like giving things a new lease of life, glad you liked the video
Incredible effect good job. Will bring some scotch eggs as soon as we can. I think I am wise to put off my attempts
It's not that hard and I'm sure you would have done it very well but maybe not what you are going for. Look fwd to the scotch eggs as long as they don't roll off.
Love the table a grand job indeed
Enjoyed the video I would say travelling on the Thames downstream was scary and windy couldn't hear audio
A lot of wind doesn't help the audio, also at night the phone worked much better than the GoPro but the sound is worse. Maybe I should do subtitles.
What about voice over
I've put the subtitles on, hopefully this helps. Thanks for letting me know.
One of the best videos Ian. What a great crew you had there. Looking forward to the next.
Do you still have any issues with the engine cutting out ?
Not this year since I redid the fuel system and filters. Touch wood!
@@DutchBargeRestoration I have heard your engine when it's ticking over and it sounds to be "Hunting" quite badly, not a nice constant speed, this could be part of your problem of it stopping ,often just after you close the throttle, I suspect you could have a problem with the govener(part of the fuel injection pump)on the actual engine It could just be out of adjustment,it could have parts missing !, you mention loosing some bits into the bilge from the excess fuel device ( cold start ). It could be as simple as that bit missing, as they can often work as a damper on the govener mech. whilst the engine is running, If you can find anyone with experience on fuel injection pumps they should be able to help, it may be all it needs is setting up with a twist of a screw or tweak of a spring to get away from the hunting situation , please do not try stripping the govener down yourself this needs someone with knowledge of injection pumps, serious engine damage can result if it goes wrong ! The chap who overhauled your injectors may be able to help you more if you explain the symptoms to him. Cheers, Bob.
Thanks for the advice. I think the stopping problem has now been fixed, however the engine does hunt at tickover, refurbing the injector pump is on the list.
Hope that will cure the starting issue as well, I have seen this before on other engines where all that is required is a small adjustment to cure the trouble, but whilst it persists other problems can surface that would otherwise have not,( starter ring gear etc.) The missing cold start components could be the issue to all of this as on some injector pumps it can have a damping effect on the fuel rack(in the pump)thus stopping the hunting / cutting out etc. Hopefully your pump chappie can address this for you sometime soon. Safe sailing, Cheers, Bob
Àlways great to watch your journeys, keep up the good work, be careful jumping off the boat, be safe 🤗
Thanks a lot, happy new year.
Nice docking happy new year to you both
Thanks, have a happy new year.
Hi again Ian. I may have missed some bits, I assume this new stand-alone gen will give you more flexibility when moored, provide ability to fill batteries faster, and not having to solely rely on the main engine generator.
There I an automatic changeover switch that senses a feed from shore power or the generator. In affect when the generator is on it's as if you are on shore power, which means we can use high draw appliances, charge battery banks etc wherever we are. So truly self sufficient as long as we have diesel.
Nice compact generator ideal for the space well done
nice barge pity you speed all up ,
I think you are right, it is too fast. I wanted to show the whole long pound. Slower would mean the video would be very long and I thought people would get bored.
Good evening! I have seen all your videos, they are wonderful! I would like if you could make a video over a cup of tea talking about the money you used, the materials you used, how much you pay per year for insurance and so on. thank you very much! you are wonderful and you are a genius! respect! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏
Thanks for that, really made my day. Will maybe do a video walk through of the boat next year, before we make the channel crossing just in case. Money wise, I will have to add it up, stopped counting some time ago. What materials did you want to know about?
Looks nice
Thanks Kevin, should keep the sun off.
Looks like the pin on that lock could swing down and hold against the iron foot treads acting like a chock to keep the lock open ?
Yes I thought that but it was too far over and didn't fit against the foot treads. I think we are on the right track but just couldn't make it work.
Really enjoying your adventures. We’re thinking of taking our Dutch barge on the K&A to Bath. Can you let me know Neeltje’s length x width x draft?
Hi, thanks glad you are liking the videos. Length 16m not incl rudder, width is 3.6m, around 80-90 cm draft, airdraft 2.2-2.3 m. Hope you enjoy the K&A.
"Barge on steroids" Good shout heckler🤣. Another grand voyage guys.
She gets a lot of attention when we are out and about, and quite right to, at 120 yrs old she should be the star of the show.
Very enjoyable video, I'm glad to see the engine is running all okay now, I know you had a few problems in the early days but it sounds good now, carry on the good work 😊
Nice to see your enjoying the fruits of your labour
Thanks. Nice to see it working right for a change.
Corrrr you’re not far from my house. I live near white horse hill. Nice blog
Glad you like it. You live in a lovely part of the world with great pubs.
Happy Days
That was entertaining! I wish you'd included how you got unstuck though. Best regards to both.
Thanks Nigel, just reverse, theory is that the backwash of your propeller under the hull and the thrust will get you back out. Worked in this case.
Hi both and doggy, your doing good, enjoying your adventures, keep going guys 🤗
Thanks a lot.
Hi. I’ve have messaged you in the passed when I noticed your barge at Newbury moorings. I’m looking to buy a sail away and do my own fit out. I’ve spoken to Newbury morning to see if I could moor where you did on the canal side but they weren’t very helpful as they didn’t want me to do the fit out there. On you travels of the Kennet and Avon do you know of moorings big enough for a wide beam where I can fit out the interior. I’m local to Newbury but the 3 local marinas can’t accommodate. Cheers Brian
I would go and see Steve at the Tom Jones boatyard in Windsor (see episode 38). It's a proper boatyard where you can do your fit out on dry land. Plenty of help and expertise on hand too.
Àlways enjoy your videos, try and do more often if you can, have fun😊

Love it!! More please
You may regret saying that. We went all the way to Bristol.
More of this please. that was lovely.
Wow!you guys can ski behind that barge.
Great video. Wonder why the overplating of the turn of the bilge didn't go above the wsterline.
Try suspending the pump in the box with plastic ties off the Hull as to cradle it.
Will give it a go next time I'm in the bilge.
