My grandfather(we're Scottish)served from D-Day +1(7th June 1944) right through till the end of the war inside Germany. During that time his then only child died back in Scotland from measles(no,he did not get to go home for leave to grieve)and he took part in the horrific liberation of Bergen Belsen,15,000 or so murdered innocents,he went through it all. But still when he and his unit came across Hitler youth troops their initial impulse was to treat them a bit like wayward 13 yr olds. Some units cut their combat trousers into shorts ,put lipstick on them and told them to go home to mummy. Big mistake. My grandfather and his mates swiftly realised the Hitler youth were a mixed bunch,some just wanted to surrender,some were disarmed by the LOCAL Germans and made to surrender. But others were fanatical and well led. And you never knew which was which initially in many cases,so my grandad and his mates took the opinion that a bullet from a 50 year old rifle in a 13year olds hands could kill as easy as a bullet from a modern gun in a fanatical SS man's hands,so they shot first. Sometimes after killing of wounding a Hitler youth soldier a mass of little hands ,white flags and sobs would be the reply,other times a mass of fire from captured and refurbished soviet MGs and rifles was the reply. It just depended.
