read the rules, property auctions are a thing in Monopoly. if you want to make it more complicated, just always do property auctions when someone lands on an unowned property. It will drain cash quickly, and people have to gamble on holding a reserve to complete a Monopoly later or bidding up a property right now.

Monopoly should last <1hr if you play it properly. Most people play it with "house rules" that completely ruin the balance of the game. 1 or 2 simple rules completely ruin it.

Regarding monopoly. In order to get sets if no one had one... my family and I would always do deals with conditions - for instance if you're trading and both getting sets... whoever would get the lesser set, would get some sort of immunity on the other property / sometimes the whole set. Means you profit with a set, they profit with a better set but a lower number of sources of income... and the two of you benefit whilst all the other players suffer. The very heart of monopoly.

In Sweden we have our own take on Monopoly called "Finans" (finance) which is a lot more involved and require a lot more strategy. You can only buy property or stocks by going to a bank, you can take loans to invest, you can buy parts in corporate groups to get a cut when other players make money, you can gamble on stocks, etc.

Theres a game called fortune street thats like monopoly except theres stocks and you can buy out properties and the game has better incentive to move around the board

One of the rules to help prevent player 1 getting ahead in Monopoly is usually that you cannot purchase on your first go round the board. This allows bad luck to cause player 1 to fall behind on the position.
