Is this exactly the same with a 6 speed?
Hi Having trouble putting the old center console frame trim back on Any tips or tricks for those particular clips etc? Having trouble pushing it all the way in Thanks
But how to gain access to the bushing without removing entirely the cable?
You only need to gain access to the engine compartment end of the cable. Just remove the bolt securing the cable end to the front to back bracket on the selector shaft.
I have seen multiple recommendations for your kits and videos. Was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me, as I see the kits a bit cheaper elsewhere but am willing to pay a little more for 'good support'. 2013 Jetta 2.0 TDI Sportwagen with just over 130k miles on it. No issues with engine performacne, everything runs smooth and tight. Bought it from a dealership at 108k miles through the Volkswagen buyback program after the TDI 'fix'. Not knowing whether the belt has been replaced before so it is definitely time. I have replaced a timing chain, multiple water pumps, and even replaced a head gasket on a car before including all new valves (had a timing chain break in a Grand Am but got lucky to not have engine damage). Having moderate mechanical skills, but in not a mechanic. Is this something I can tackle in my own garage? What would you estimate for the amount of time required? Just some questions I have before I commit to the repair, or decide to take it to our local VW certified garage. Before I go all in, is this a job that can be done without a lift and do I need any specialty tools? If so do you have a link to a tool kit for it? Not looking for Snap On quality, just something sufficient to do it a few times without crumbling.
Hi Kevin - It sounds like you have more than enough wrenching experience to get this done. Generally if you know righty-tighty lefty-loosey, can/will follow instruction, have a jack, stands, and decent set of hand tools this won't be a problem. We cover all the necessary tools you'll need right at the beginning of the video and you get access moments after you order your kit. That allows you to pick up anything you're short on before taking your car apart. Most importantly if you get stuck you can always email or (gasp) call us if you run into a snag. Regarding specialty tools: You'll need the set we offer here: dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/metalnerd-vw-common-rail-timing-belt-tool-kit Also an M10 triple square dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/m10-triple-square-socket-for-common-rail-timing-belt-job And if you don't have a bunch of hose pinch pliers the cap plug set is a good idea. dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-tdi-timing-belt-kits/products/cap-plug-set-for-timing-belt-job
just had my "Deluxe Shifter Bushing kit for 2008+ MK5 and Mk6 vehicles" arrive for my 2010 mk6 gti. I'm putting together a list of parts/tools I will need before getting started - from watching your video I have so far: JB weld 2 part epoxy 8mm (5/16") drill bit 28.575mm (1 1/8") hole saw 2.38125mm (3/32") drill bit sandpaper for super pin card stock Am I missing anything?
Dental picks and necessary tools for console removal. We have a video on that.
How do I find the kit?
dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-shifter-bushings/products/cable-saver-replacement-cable-end-bushing-set-for-mk4-golf-gti-jetta-new-beetle-audi-tt
For the airbag light btw, you can unhook the light piece itself so you can still drive without the trim in.
BEST EXPLANATION EVER.
Muchas gracias por el aporte
would it also fit a MQ200 gearbox?
No, we do not offer a short shifter for MQ200. We do offer a high quality side to side bracket which elimates the poorly designed plastic bell crank and eliminates a ton of baked-in slop. dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-shifter-bushings/products/metal-side-to-side-reduction-bracket-for-mq200-only
In the middle of this fix from a front/back cable that slipped off. Your videos have been instrumental and I very much appreciate you making and sharing them with the public. Thank you great instruction and no music 👍🏻
Jim ) I have a 2000 jetta 2.0 / 5 speed . The only problem I'm having is first gear has gotten harder and harder to engage . Its really difficult to get into gear .many times i have to just start out in second gear . All componets are original , HELP ????
Sounds like textbook bushing slop
Hello, same for gearbox GQQ ? GOLF MK5 1.9 TDI THANK
Yes GQQ is an MQ250
Молодцы американцы! Всегда познавательно.
Does this work on plastic intake manifold for jetta 2013 tdi?
No. The plastic Euro manifold 03L129711AG uses this repair: dieselgeek.com/products/p2015-code-repair-bracket-for-vw-cr-tdi-with-black-plastic-manifold-03l-129-711ag?_pos=1&_sid=1e681a60f&_ss=r
If is very rare, but there are a handful of 711AG plastic TDI manifolds in North America. Please confirm with us by vin or photo prior to ordering 711AG bracket if you're in North America.
Trying to find info on the reverse lockout mechanism for this shifter. I can go into reverse without pushing down so its easy to mistakenly enter 1st/reverse gears. Is this solved by taking out slop or is there a physical reverse lockout bushing/bracket part that I need to confirm is not damaged?
Lack of reverse lockout is usually a maladjusted side to side cable or bushing slop precluding a good adjustment.
I have the same issue. The gear selection is fine but I no longer require to press down and select reverse. I saw from previous models there is a plastic plate that can break which I don't see in your video..... I see many videos about bushing replacement but not the lockout plate
What are the torque specs for cam and fp nuts?
We provide all the torque specs in our instructional video.
This is cool and informative but how is it done while it's inside the car?
You have to pull the center console trim. We have a video on that.
Are you letting the eboxy set in 4-6 hours or cure in 15-24?
You need to let the epoxy fully cure. You really want that drill guide to be adhered securely so that you can center drill the pin to exactly 5/16.
And how long after can you drive the car with the epoxy going in the first gear getter?
After it fully cures. It's really all there in the video.
My car all of a sudden won’t shift in to reverse. It’s as if something is holding it from slipping forward into the reverse gear. This is true at the gear stick and also when I try to manually select it at the gearbox it self. Any ideas? Is it internally in the gearbox itself or a shift mechanism issue?
You won't be able to shift into reverse from the selector shaft in the engine compartment with the cables connected because from there you have no way to overcome the reverse lockout in the cabin. We may be able to supply more specific information if you email us directly. Sales @ dieselgeek.com.
There is a rubber or plastic grommet that deformed at the base of my stick shifter, and it would not allow the shift to come back up. I could have shaved it down but I opted for a new shifter along with your kit. Shits solid now. I just uploaded my video a few minutes ago.
Sounds like you're talking about the old bushing. Ours replaced that to restore functionality without resorting to a bunch of new parts. And the material is significantly more rigid than stock for a better feel and a forever fix
Finally installed my kit after having it for a year. Thanks for making the kit and video.
Despite how old this video is, thanks for sharing it.
The adjustment on my 2013 vw golf r keeps coming out of place and I gotta put it back for it to go in gear what do I need to keep it from coming out
Sounds like the heavily loaded front to back cable end is stripped. Time for a Sigma!
What would make the shift knob not push down? That’s why I can get reverse right now
Typically bad shifter shaft bushings. We sell hard plastic high performance replacements: dieselgeek.com/collections/vw-shifter-bushings/products/high-performance-vw-shifter-shaft-bushings-for-mk4-golf-jetta-new-beetle
I’ve bought several items from y’all at DG, but… I owe you a beer for this one! Ok, I prob owe you a whole six pack by now. Thanks for the tech assist!
does this work with mk7 gti ? because I'm having an issue and I'm hoping its not synchro's or anything that big and just needing a shifter alignment
Yes.
Reverse and first is really difficult to get into what did I do wrong
Side to side adjustment. Watch till the end
Do i have to put back the original belly pan? Mine is missing and I just want to install the panzer plate and skip putting back the original plastic belly pan.
No, but if you still have one we recommend reinstalling it. We designed the Panzer to work in conjunction with the factory belly pan in the interest of stabilizing the side skirts, airflow and heat management, and keeping things clean and quiet.
What size is the snap ring? Mine did its job and snapped off the pliers, then went Mach 1 into the seat rails somewhere.
14mm. 9/16" works
Que referencia tiene el casquillo de plástico que va con el cepo de la palanca. Gracias
Can you email us a photo of the piece you're inquiring about please? sales at dieselgeek dot com
Can you give a link to buy these tools to remove and install the cam seals. I’m struggling to locate them and same with cam holding tool to torque the cam down. I looked on your site and didn’t see anything. I need some help please.
This was not meant to be a comprehensive how-to. Generally there are 3 types of seals and we wanted to educate regarding best install practices. Replacement procedure and requisite tools are very much application specific. We recommend purchasing a 24 hour Erwin subscription for the very reasonable price $35. (vw.erwin.com) In that time you can download EVERYTHING for your car. The real-deal specialty VW tools are available to the public from vw.snapon.com.
Do you have a video for the shifter for a 99-05 Audi TT?
MK1 TT is the same as MK4 except without serviceable shift bushings.
So we can't do this on the mk1 TT? @@dieselgeekdotcom
You are a real master mechanic
Yay - Lucky me! My Mk4 Jetta is a 1999 and has no lockout provision whatsoever, looks completely different. Lost reverse, 1st and 5th today. Get to figure it out myself. Did find the thin mount plate surrounding shifter assy. fractured at the rearmost flarenut so it's sloppy jalopy. Fabricating a steel doubler right now.
99 MK4 uses a 02A transmission. We have videos for those on the YT channel and products at dieselgeek.com in the bushings section.
I've done your step by step and I have reverse but I can't get to 5th and it seems my shifter is naturally leaning to the right like 3rd and 4th are far to the right and 1st and 2nd are more center. What did I do wrong?
Stiff side to side pivot or bushing slop. We have videos on those subjects.
Just installed the Gen 3 on my 2023 GTI. Had your Gen 2 on my 2019 GTI. Just wanted to say that your product is top notch and the Gen 3 feels even better than the previous. Had no problems both times with the shifter adjustment using your supplied pin also.
How i suppose to do that through the small hole?
Lots of folks do, including us. We believe in you ;)
Similar for 02j 5 speed??? Quick adjustment turned into no 5th gear
Yes, but we actually do cover a broken pin in the 02J video at 3:24 czcams.com/video/sheTKD03hmo/video.html
Yay, this fixed my issue! It was the other cable end that was keeping my 2nd from engaing, and making reverse go in way too essily instead of first, which is exciting at intersections.
The bolts on my Passat b6 are on the other side facing towards the windscreen so it’s much more difficult to remove the actuator, would anyone suggest a different method or another video advising how to do it?
What is that black plastic cap that covers the hole on the shift tower? Is that for lubrication? Please some info would be appreciated!
Vent
How do you remove them end completely
You'd have to disassemble the center console and drop the shift box out the bottom of the car after removing the exhaust. No easy task. That's why our repair bushing for the cable end is such a Time saver.
Hi can I order a couple of these gear getter? I need it for skoda octavia 2011. I live in the UK and can not find it anywhere, please help me. Thank you
I am looking for this exact first gear getter (the white peice of plastic replaced by that black one) for skoda octavia and i am struggling fo find it in the UK or anywhere, please help me get one or 2 of those? Thank you
Shipping to the UK is no problem.
Awesome video! Have a Passat that sat for 6 months with a door off and interior is in rough shape! This really helps me as I am starting to do a deep clean!
Awesome video and tip! My 2020 GTI was always harsh to engage first and second gears, even after doing the standard dead center adjustment many times. Fine tuning the cable like this made shifting in those gears so smooth! Thanks
Great video!! Is this similar to a 2012 Passat CC??
Passat CC is probably going to be more similar to MK6. We have a video for that one as well.
