康定 Kāngdìng: A Small Day Hike With Our Dogs in Tibetan Kham to Acclimatise to the Altitude
康定 Kāngdìng - or དར་རྩེ་མདོ། Dartsedo as it’s known to Tibetans - is the first town across the border from Sìchuān in what was once the Tibetan kingdom of ཁམས Kham. For centuries it was a trading outpost, where Tibetans exchanged wool, pelts and warhorses for Chinese tea, silk and porcelain. ཁམས་པ Khampa people were the most feared warriors of the ethnic groups now referred to collectively as ‘Tibetans.’ While it lies outside of what the Chinese call 西藏自治区 ‘Tibet Autonomous Region,’ Kham is essential for understanding Tibetan history.
We first visited Kāngdìng, the gateway to Kham, as fresh-faced twenty-somethings back in 2013. Back then the bus ride from Chéngdū took ten hours. We've wanted to return ever since, but Covid restrictions and our dogs being scared of cars made the trip impossible. Now both those obstacles have been lifted, we were so excited to return! We hope you enjoy revisiting the area with us.

Hiking China: Exploring a Hidden Gem Close to Chengdu, 龙窝子

National holidays are always a chaotic time of year to travel in China. Hundreds of millions of the working public get released for a fleeting, simultaneous moment. The Chinese idiom 人山人海 renshan renhai, ‘people-mountain, people-sea’ becomes the go-to term for describing train stations, parks, nature reserves and historical sites. Not only did we visit 龙窝子Longwozi, ‘Dragon’s Lair’ during the Ma...

    Any tips on how to relax and encourage your dogs in the trailer . Something I want to try .

    • @dogmatictales
      @dogmatictales Před 26 dny

      @@hoboesque_ There are many ways and I’m not a dog behaviouralist, but some things that worked for us are starting in a very non-stimulating environment (such as inside) and getting the dog comfortable lying in the trailer while it’s on the ground, without the wheels on. You can hide treats inside and allow the dog to hunt for them with its nose. You can then put the wheels on (but make sure it wont fall over!) and ask the dog to get in the trailer and lie down for a reward. Very slowly, start moving the trailer for short distances and reward it. If it helps, black out the windows by sticking some fabric or plastic over it, as for some dogs the scenery moving past can make them excited/nervous. When the dog’s comfortable being wheeled around in your apartment and being attached to the bicycle, graduate to a very quiet place outside, where they won’t get excited by cats or squirrels or whatever. Repeat the process, be patient and if they get nervous, move back to an easier level like trying again inside the house. Good luck!

The only difference is one provides a wonderful healthy Beverage whilst the pubs and Taverns of the West provide our beverages of destruction.

      Hi, that’s great to hear! I would say that wild camping is probably technically illegal here like the rest of china, however Sichuan is very relaxed about this. We’ve wild camped all over the place and the locals always just find it funny lol. If it’s someone’s land we try to ask permission, and of course some restricted national parks or ‘scenic spots’ are off limits. Where are you thinking of going?
