Welcome to History's Forgotten People! My real name is Miranda Stork, and I'm a historian who leans towards womens' history, but I love all of it, really! I created this channel because I love learning about the forgotten people of history, and the forgotten stories of those who are famous. I like to peel back the layers of myth, legend and misinformation to find the real flesh and blood people beneath the caricatures. Thanks for being here for the ride, and I hope you enjoy my documentaries!
Wife Of The Conqueror, Queen of England | Matilda of Flanders | PART 2
Matilda of Flanders is little remembered alongside her more famous husband, William the Conqueror. But she was a formidable woman in her own right, whose regal ancestry aided her husband and children, whose political knowledge was fundamental to ruling England, and she would prove herself to be every inch the equal to William. This video looks at her life as a mature duchess, a regent of Normandy in her own right, William's famous conquest of England, and how this affected Matilda...come back next week for the final part of Matilda's story!

Princess Diana was related to Georgina
But there are Plantagenets alive today, so what do you mean, last Plantagenets?
The Wars between cousins.
A lovely woman.
My heart bleeds for her. Well, actually it doesn't.
She was into burning people at the stake. Not particularly bloody.
amazing video
🖤🖤🖤
Princess Diana was definitely more popular than Georgianna. No comparison at all, Diana had fans on all seven continents.
The Register of the Honour of Richmond thanks Matilda for persuading King William to grant Earl Edwin’s Yorkshire lands to Alan Rufus, the Breton who was the commander of the royal cavalry.
28:57 - "fewer offers" never " less offers"… thank you for your videos. I enjoy your work very much.❤😊
Damn, “the devils bastard” has got to be one of the worst things to be called….
The grave injustice that Katherine was sentenced to death under a Law passed by Parliament AFTER her alleged adultery and failure to disclose her past sexual history, was not lost on the founding Fathers of the USA. Our Constitution states: “Congress shall pass no Law “Ex Post Facto”.
It was all "trumped up" false evidence against Anne Boleyn so Henry could get rid of her Poor woman ..
Her mother died, probably of sickness!!! Well I’d say that’s a given
She had some of her parents temper alright!
She was a child who had no choice. No one could refuse Henry 8th. Sexually abused. She did not get herself into that disgusting "marriage". The king got what he wanted. How can you call her stupid??
Poor Catherine. She couldn't even rest in death. Thank goodness for Queen Victoria ordering the restoration of the chapel so those buried there could have a proper burial with the respect they deserved and hopefully peace.

14:40 I once read tgat this pokicy of the church banning marriages between close relatives was partly due to them wanting to stamp out the sin of incest and it aldo had the intended consequence of breaking clan structures in Europe and creating the more trust based society they have now
Great video, friend. Objectively discussed and well researched. It baffles me how modern western people think that nedieval Europe had no strong and powerful women at all. Real history clearly disproves this.

Brilliant, I really enjoyed your work. Thank you 🙏
Brings to mind Princess Dianna. Innocent and Too young to realize what she was getting into.
Randomly listening to history became my self soothing habit when I was in university 8 ish years ago. Rest my eyes, learn about monarch, eapecially women I'd never heard of and their children and husbands, and political choices. These have really been amazing on this channel. I love your line delivery and vocal inflections. It's both relaxing and informative.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you're enjoying them! 😊
Thank you so much for your work on this production. I hadnt much knowledge of what went on in Henry's marriage to Katherine Parr. Let alone keep their names straight with all the Anns,Katherines,Etc..Just glad this brought the end to the episode of Henry the Eighth and all the people that were wrongly put to death by his plans. Hardly got what he planned for with Edward's passing at 15. Hmm. Sad yes,all around what a terrible soap opera.
It boggles my mind that people can hate her for helping set people free.
Thank you so much. I think this is the first ive heard of Katherine's whole story. Yes very convoluted family tree and...very sad for a young woman to have to die at the ideas and deep psychological issues of a king like Henry and that awful hypocrite Cranmer. A sad tale indeed. Thank you again for all the work put into this program.
Some Portuguese Historians says that it really Happened the Corpse Queen.
How can someone who can read not be able to write? I don't understand. If anyone knows please educate me.
They are different skills. If you don’t practice the skill of writing, or the materials are too expensive to provide to everyone in the family, it’s not a surprise she and many others only learned to read. In the same vein, listening and speaking a language are also two different skills. That’s why some children of immigrants born in a new land can grow up able to understand their parents’ language, but not being comfortable speaking more than a few words. This is also why, when formally leaning a new language, there are four different skill areas that need to be both taught and assessed: written comprehension (reading), written production (writing), oral production (speaking) and oral comprehension (listening).
Way cool as usual. Thanks!
There is a very well-done novelized version of the story of William the Conqueror (that was the title) by Georgette Heyer, which includes the courtship of William and Mathilda, anyone who enjoys this video would probably enjoy it, as well. Based on extensive historical research and written in the 1950s. Just a really well-written story that reads very naturally. This is a great video, too!
I really appreciate your in-depth presentation. I'm descended from one of Elizabeth Woodville's sisters.
Really nice to learn about the female and their influence
You can say that again.
The fact that her husband had fathered a child before their marriage and she took the little girl in and loved her like her own speaks volumes about her, I think.
Great video!! ❤😊 I always learn so much and highly entertained. 👑📚📖💡
Me too. I also liked seeing buildings that were built.
Theoretically women weren’t “unwanted burden”. If they weren’t from the class that had to toil their whole lives, if they were of the estate class they weren’t idle either. Managing an estate, often while their men were away for years, and having 14 children is not a cackewalk
Thank you, awesome story of a fascinating woman.
Joyce that is a new name. 😂
Excellent insightful video! I throughly enjoyed this 2nd part dedicated to this formidable woman in history and loved the fact that this time her story is brought forward and not left in the background behind her husband as she's usually portrayed. Your beautiful graphics and narration are always delightful. Can't wait for part 3! Thanks for sharing 💖💐👑
Thank you so much! 😊 Yeah, it was trickier with this one as you can't really leave out William's conquest of England, but I also wanted it to be secondary to Matilda's story! Hopefully I got the balance right, haha.
Those abbey's look like huge indoor cities.
You're right, they are breathtaking. It's little wonder the ordinary people of these places did as they were told for those in charge for so long, when you consider their own homes compared to these structures.
I think they look like castles.
This has been excellent. One more week to wait for the finale.
Thank you so much! 😊 Part 3 is well under way.
I read a book on the life of the dauphin after the executions of his parents and it’s horrible that poor child
Would she be considered a very educated woman of her time or just normal learned noblewoman.
Good question! I think Matilda would probably have been considered very educated for her time, due to her knowledge of international politics and Latin, but equally other noblewomen in the early Medieval period were also highly educated. I think it was probably like someone with a Doctorate amongst a lot of people with MA degrees - all considered very academically clever when compared to the general public or even their husbands, but the one with the Doctorate has even more knowledge than that.
She's not forgotten. Catholics made her a saint, and she's the patron saint of childbirth and pregnant women. Her story of how her father was executed by his own brother, taken in by Richard III, who blamed Elizabeth Woodville for her father's death and then having to hide her name by being married to someone twice her age and then trying to survive in a Tudor court, wasn't forgotten.
