- On the 5th November, all across Britain (and some places abroad too!), bonfires are lit to remember the treasonous gunpowder plot of 1605. A group of Catholics planned to blow up their king and parliament in an attempt to regain their faith in Britain, and change the course of history. Guy Fawkes was just one of a larger group of plotters, but as the person caught first for the crime, he became the face of the plot, and a hated figure for centuries to come. This video looks at how a Yorkshire schoolboy grew up to become Britain's most infamous terrorist...

If I remember correctly, Oliver Cromwell was the great-great nephew of Thomas Cromwell the one time Secretary to Henry the VIII.
Very interesting and appreciate on the 418th anniversary. I love all the research you and your team does, it confirmed everything what was shown on the series "Gunpowder" about the plot on HBO about 5 years ago.

Thank you so much! 😊 (Although it's just me, there's no 'team' yet!) 'Gunpowder' was a really good series; although all historical dramas go off piste, that one did quite well, I thought, of sticking to what might have really happened. I think they did give Anne Vaux more of a central role than she actually had, but it was still really good. Kit Harington, who played Robert Catesby, is actually one of his descendants! (I didn't know that until recently).

I don't know all the players involved, so I appreciate your analysis of "Gunpowder". Knowing what I know, I feel it was historically accurate.

Ngl I sometimes feel bad for this guy (see what I did there) a bit- the fact that a holiday is dedicated to having his effigy burnt is quite bad😭 I suppose blowing up people doesn't make you liked but James I did no better (his treaty on hunting and torturing "witches" and that other one about his superiority as a King are gross istg- even worse that he carried it out)
I agree! While what Guy Fawkes and the others in his group did was terrorism, and it would have killed a lot of people, I do think he's been punished enough now. As you say, James I wasn't an innocent person, either!

Always a fascinating story (I still laugh that the plot was given away by one of the conspirators sending a letter to his friend in Parliament, telling him not to turn up that day 😂).
BTW will you be doing a series at some point be covering Charles II’s mistresses, like Hortense Maciani & Nell Gwyn?
The letter is really interesting, because there are a lot of theories around it! The most well-known one is Anne Vaux, but it could have been Francis Tresham. And there's even a theory that Baron Monteagle himself found out about the plot beforehand, but didn't know how to approach the king about it, so he made up the letter and sent it to himself! Who knows. 😂
I definitely have Nell Gwyn on my list! I'll get Hortense on there as well. 😊

There were far too many people involved in this plot, it was inevitable someone would blab and they’d be rumbled. Spy rings, and the Chinese triads, operate on the principle of very few people in the plot, thereby reducing the risk.
There really were - especially as it's clear to us now that as a large number of the group were related to each other, it's likely their entire families also knew about the plot, at least on some level.

Hi Michelle, I'm good, I'm glad you are too! 😊 It's getting colder over here, but it's still quite mild for the time of year (we're normally a few degrees colder than we are at the moment). Not raining at the moment though! I love snow, but I can imagine it's a very different experience to here in the UK where we only get a few inches!
17th century history is kinda unknown and stranger to me because I don't bother myself to read it completely and know all the details, the way I do about the previous and next century🤣so thank you so much for this and release me of the bother😂🥰👏👏👏

@historysforgottenpeople, have you seen the HBO miniseries Gunpowder starring Kit Harrington? Turns out the person Kit portrayed was his own ancestor.
I have, except it was on the BBC here! It was a really good series as well. While they took some liberties with the truth (as all historical dramas do), I thought they did a really good job of presenting what probably really happened.
I wonder if it was not a BBC production in the first place.

Didn't they just have a ceremonial inspection of the basements of Parliament prior to the King's Speech?
It may well have been tied up in that, but there are also sources from different angles agreeing that James also wanted the inspection as he was nervous of what might happen - especially after the note sent to Monteagle.
Thanks for another great video. Growing up in a Society of Friends (Quaker) community -thank you King Charles the second and William Penn - I’m always conflicted between the requirements of human nature, culture, and the commandment Thou Shall not Kill. That’s why although I sympathize with the left wing, seeing Guy Fawkes masks at a demonstration causes me to turn around and leave.
Same here - I do have sympathy for the plight Catholics found themselves in. It must have been heart-breaking to hope the new king would be lenient towards his Catholic subjects, as he had once said he would, only to find it was all talk. But by the same token, as you say, once you harm other people, your argument become moot in the face of hurting others.
And the Guy Fawkes masks make me a bit cold, too. I feel that a lot of the people who wear those at demonstrations are probably more influenced by 'V for Vendetta' than they are the actual historical story of Guy Fawkes, or at least ignore the aspects of him that involve killing a lot of innocent people.

They ARE influenced by V for Vendetta MOVIE, and it is the history of Fawkes and the end of the movie that twisted the intent of the graphic novel that made Alan Moore disavow the movie. @@HistorysForgottenPeople
