- Katherine Parr would be Henry VIII's final and sixth wife, and her life was a study in patience. She would be the most married of Henry's consorts, marrying four times, but Katherine was also his most intellectual wife, writing several books and contributing hugely to the education of women. She would also be responsible for repairing the relationship between Henry and his daughters. But she would not find her own romance until she was well into her 30s, as a widow for the third time, and it would not end happily...

She was luckier than the rest of the wives. On second thought, maybe Anne of Cleves was the luckiest
She outlived him the rest ended up tragically.
Anne was luckier. She ended up dead after giving birth to the daughter of a husband that never loved her.
Anne of Cleves was definitely the luckiest! She's probably my favourite, alongside Catherine of Aragon.
Such a shame Anne of cleves and Catherine Parr get little attention in the media.
Anne of Cleves was definitely the luckiest!! Poor Kat Parr survived Henry, yes, but then immediately got married to Thomas Seymour, and he done any and everything to her, including molesting Princess Elizabeth. And had Kat so gaslit and brainwashed she went along with it as well, even sometimes participating, all while Katherine was pregnant so, so sad. Anne of Cleves came out smelling like a rose in comparison to ALL the rest!
imagine falling in love with someone, spending years thinking you and him are star-crossed lovers because of an arranged marriage, finally being able to be with him, only for him to try to groom your stepdaughter behind your back😟although I can say out of all Henry VIII's wives, Katherine Parr might have had an adventurous life which was also fortunately successful and not tragic, but this one detail is really a pesky one, considering it broke her as well, the way she didn't forgot it, even in her deathbed💔💔💔
It wasn’t behind her back though. She was a part of it and supposedly during one of the “romps” she held Elizabeth while he tore her dress. She didn’t regret it until she was pregnant and sent Elizabeth to another guardian.
I know, I really do feel for Katherine in that regard. I think it also shows how easily someone can be manipulated by the wrong person, and it's nothing to do with intelligence or confidence, Thomas just absolutely fed on Katherine's emotional state and twisted it for his own ends.
I think Catherine would have been lucky if she did not marry Thomas Seymour. Henry left her a wealthy widow. Plus she had the affections of Princess Elizabeth .
Such a shame her husband before henry viii didn't have kids together then she probably wouldn't have married that fat jerk henry or pervert thomas.

I feel so sad for the little baby Mary. She was just forgotten by history and just disappeared even though she had such noble blood.

Thank you so much for your work on this production. I hadnt much knowledge of what went on in Henry's marriage to Katherine Parr. Let alone keep their names straight with all the Anns,Katherines,Etc..Just glad this brought the end to the episode of Henry the Eighth and all the people that were wrongly put to death by his plans. Hardly got what he planned for with Edward's passing at 15. Hmm. Sad yes,all around what a terrible soap opera.
I feel like Karherine Parr is generally under appreciated. She was a scholar when women weren’t generally considered capable of being such, and she was savvy. I really enjoy learning about her and I’m really glad you’ve featured her.
I agree she isn't properly appreciated, but scholarship actually was expected of noblewomen in the Renaissance period. Just not common women (or men).
I could see her in modern times being an ivy league professor.

I've always been fascinated by her, but I'll always be confused about her part in Elizabeth's relationship with her husband. I know it's been centuries but it just seems so out of character with everything else that's known about her

Confused? Not really. She was blind of love for Seymour. Trying to stay blind to his true nature is normal when in a relationship like that.
I think she did not see what she did not want to see, but when she came upon them in each other's arms she had to see it to protect Elizabeth and she did.
We have to remember that all the information we have about this 'affair' are court documents for a case trying to prove Seymour was a traitor. It was almost as trumped-up as Anne Boleyn's. How much of it was made-up celebrity gossip we will never know.
Elizabeth was potentially implicated. Her governess Kat had to make it sound like Seymour was stalking her without her consent, or the mere fact that a betrothal suggestion had been RAISED before Seymour married Parr (if again, that is true and not mere gossip), Elizabeth would have been executed for considering marriage options without the king's permission. Seymour was already doomed, so better to blacken him further than risk Elizabeth's life as well. Katherine was I believe already dead so tarnishing her reputation to save Elizabeth was again something Kat would have seen as worth it.
Have you researched this?The cutting off of Elizabeth's black mourning gown by Seymour assisted by Katherine?The beginning of the end to this abuse and harassment by Seymour towards an innocent adolescent,who thenceforth avoided Seymour's invasions of her bedchamber by being dressed early and having an attendant with her.Distgusting to suggest that this child encouraged his advances.Pervert who got what he deserved.
Catherine Parr deserved much better; as well as her daughter, Mary. Who knows what would happen to both of them had they not met their tragic ends so soon in their lifetimes

This was an excellent documentary, but for the comments concerning Elizabeth and Katherine's husband. Elizabeth had no culpability in the matter as she was only a child. Katherine had nothing to "forgive" Elizabeth for and she recognized this in her continuing correspondence with Elizabeth. When Katherine realized what the situation was, she acted to protect Elizabeth in probably the only way she could at the time by sending her away. It is tragic that she and Elizabeth had become so close and that she never saw Elizabeth again. It seems that this is the only mother - daughter relationship that either of them ever had and that Katherine's true legacy may have been in her influence on the future queen of England.
Oh, I absolutely agree, Elizabeth was a child and had nothing to be sorry for at all. I'm simply presenting that part with the letter as evidence that something had gone on, and also to view it from the POV of Katherine herself, remembering that she might have seen the situation in a different light - regardless of whether she was right or not. Katherine definitely (in my humble opinion) was the closest Elizabeth came to having a mother, other than through her relationship with Kat Ashley.

It's definitely possible! I always wonder that actually, with the pain in his legs, as diabetes can often damage the nerves in your legs.
Diabetic neuropathy can be painful and debilitating for those who suffer from it. Diabetes can also slow or prevent the healing of wounds, as well as causing cysts and ulcers. Losing weight is also difficult, which also makes it worse. The diet of the king didn't help by a long shot because he had no clue about what moderation meant.

It really was a sad ending for her! After all of that, poor Katherine never got what she wanted for herself, really. The whole Elizabeth business was VERY strange, you're right. Because of how Katherine behaved the rest of her life, we do tend to give her the benefit of the doubt in how she 'romped' with Elizabeth, and it's likely she was putting her head in the sand a bit, but still...

I liked learning about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr. The more I read or learned about them, the more I'm convinced they would've been fast friends and Anne probably would've admired Catherine. Except the parts when Catherine allowed what happened with Thomas Seymour and Elizabeth though. 🤦🏽♀️ Anne wouldn't have liked that at all !!

Just curious, around 10:15 it is mentioned that Henry sending the gifts was inappropriate and Katherine felt uncomfortable about them. What are the sources for this? I’m not trying to say it’s wrong, I’m genuinely interested how we know.
I must admit, my sources for that are all secondary (from other historians who have written papers or books on Katherine), but I believe they gleaned it from letters she sent both to other people, and the somewhat stilted letter of thanks she sent to Henry. Sometimes these letters get lost, so you have to look at secondary sources that were closer to the time. If they all disagree, it's dubious as to whether something is true or not, but they do all seem to be unanimous on this point. And also, it would have been very not in keeping with etiquette anyway, even if she had been grateful for the gifts, and other people made comment at the time as well.

She was in love with Thomas but when Henry set his sights on her, she was not able to say no.
Poor Catherine. She couldn't even rest in death. Thank goodness for Queen Victoria ordering the restoration of the chapel so those buried there could have a proper burial with the respect they deserved and hopefully peace.

I haven't seen ALL of it, but I watched about half of it....I never want to discourage anyone from watching things, but I was disappointed with how far it strayed from historical accuracy. But that's an argument I have for all historical films, usually! 😂 It was fun to watch for the luxurious costumes and drama. ☺

I have asked you this once, but given you’ve heavily revisited the wives since, how would you order them, from fav to least favourite? My opinions changed a bit with these!
1) Katherine of Aragon- how much I admire this woman! She was so efficient and powerful, yet humble and kind! I could go on and on about why she’s so great, but your video does it better than I ever could :)
2) Anne of Cleves- this woman sounds so chill😭 I’d really love to know her, she was so adaptable and seems very easy going. The way she just goes “no bro” at nearly everything is almost comical, yet smart! And it worked out for her very well!
3) Jane Seymour- ok look😭 Yes, Anne went so Jane could come, but Jane behaved no worse than Anne herself had- if anything, she behaved better, bc she didn’t actively mistreat Elizabeth the way Anne did Mary-. I seriously doubt she knew Anne was going to be executed, that had *never* happened before and most likely Jane thought Anne would be sent away like Katherine had. And there’s no way Jane could stop it from happening- we know what Henry told her when she tried to convince him to be merciful to the Pilgrimage of Grace rebels. She did her best to unify England after what had happened with Anne, and ai think she succeeded in the way she could. Also, her kindness to Princess Mary is nice, Mary rly needed that after those hellish years. She has arrogance working against her once she became Queen, true, which is why she’s not higher, but, to me, that’s not enough to put her lower.
4) Katheryn Howard? I put the interrogation mark bc Idk whether you to put her or Parr here😭 It rly depends on the days. I think her asking Henry to punish Mary (albeit only by taking two ladies from her service) after all the trouble Mary had gone through w her father and having just recently made peace with him was quite rash. She was also a bit foolish in her decision to at least engage in an emotional relationship with Culpepper, but I can’t say I blame her for that- except that she should have known not to do it🥲 As Queen though, she seems to have been compassionate and not half bad! Ultimately I feel bad for her, and hope she’s now at peace🙏🙏
5) Catherine Parr? Again, her and Howard might switch places next week, who knows lol. I admire the fact she published books under her own name, and admire how she survived Henry (though some luck definitely came into that, bc had she not been warned, she’d likely have met Anne Boleyn and K. Howard on the scaffold :’). But there’s something about her I don’t like much… A bit like with Cecily Neville, something feels off🥲
6) Anne Boleyn- omg I dislike this woman so much😭 she was very active in displacing Katherine of Aragon (her giving Henry William Tyndale’s book in 1528 is a prime example of her wishes to be Queen) and Mary to boot. She also encouraged Henry to not talk to Katherine during their courtship because she felt she’d turn him around or smth, not to mention she didn’t want Henry to talk to Mary either. The only good thing she did (in my opinion) was to argue for the monasteries to be turned into schools, but even that was weird, bc the monasteries HAD served as schools and shelters for the poor before they were shut down, so, ig she tried to fix the mess she helped to cause, which may be a point in her favour.
