Videography of the Andromeda & Triangulum Galaxies
zhlédnutí 217Před 2 lety
The clouds are never ending here in the Pacific Northwest. However, we had a small break a few nights ago and I was able to get out my "new" used astromodified Sony A7S. The large pixels of the A7S make it excellent for low light videography and I was astounded at how easily I could see Andromeda and even the faint Triangulum Galaxy on the view screen.
Mounting a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera on an Equatorial Mount
zhlédnutí 4,5KPřed 2 lety
When I first got into astrophotography I knew I would need a star tracker or equatorial mount to capture photos of deep sky objects. I ended up going with an equatorial mount so that I could ultimately grow into the hobby with a refractor telescope. However, I wanted to start with using DSLR or mirrorless cameras on the equatorial mount but finding ways to mount them were problematic. Initially...
California Nebula on an Unmodified Camera + Samyang 135mm f2
zhlédnutí 2,6KPřed 2 lety
Yay for clear skies. Finally got out to chase my first hydrogen alpha emission nebula. Most unmodified camera filter out the warm magenta and red lights emitted by these type of nebula but with long enough exposures you can capture the faint light from these nebula. The California Nebula is a perfect wide-field deep space astrophotography target for beginners like me and my Samyang 135mm f2 len...
Why An Equatorial Mount? My First Photo with the iOptron GEM28
zhlédnutí 3,9KPřed 2 lety
We finally got clears skies for a night and I was able to use my new iOptron GEM28 equatorial mount for some astrophotography. Unfortunately the moon is nearly full limiting options for target but still came away with some impressive results on the Andromeda Galaxy. Deciding between a star tracker vs an equatorial mount was one of the first decisions I had to make getting into the hobby. I deci...
Photograph the Orion Nebula without a Star Tracker or Equatorial Mount

I've just started getting into astrophotography and wanted to share my journey along the way. I started by photography a popular wintertime deep sky object, the Orion Nebula, with nothing more than my camera, lens, and tripod. As I added skills and technologies I will update with more videos. How were you able to balance the DEC axis with the ADM adapter? I just got mine and it seems like the two silver knobs cause one side to be heavier than the other, making it impossible to balance on the DEC axis.

Thank you for your summary! I’m looking to buy this mount and needed something more than just reading. Cheers!

How do you mount the camera pointing in the opposite direction like for tracking the sun? Do you use a right angle bracket or something like that?

I like the adapter from Vixen to Arca! But I want to mount two DSLRs with Arca on the lenses to the same iOptron mount. The total are lower than the 26lb capacity. Would a dual camera plate suffice or is there a better more stable solution?

I know this is very late but can you do an in depth step by step connection or parts needed and how to connect, I am very new to dslr mounted directly to the eq mount.

Did you need to manipulate the images to get the desired results?

I think you made a good choice going with the Eq mount with your payload. The Andromeda image looked really nice. BTW with your hand controller and mount, even when polar aligned it's rare to get an object perfectly centered. I'd recommend free software like NINA and ASTAP. These can be installed on your laptop and will use plate solving to get the object perfectly centered for you. Other option is the little ASI Air but it carrys a price tag. Nice video and clear skies 👍

Lol, budget mount? Haha for who, millionaires? Ok, sure it isn't $6000 but it is still $1500 and to most people that is not budget friendly.

Thanks for the video. I'm really tempted by the CEM26/GEM28, however I feel like iOptron didn't quite hit the mark with the iPolar. Great idea, but given they don't supply an IOS or Android app to do the PA, it means you need to connect via a computer regardless. If I am connecting via a computer, then you are better off putting the money you would be spending on an iPolar on a guidescope and then getting VERY accurate polar alignment using plate solving and tracking with the likes of SharpCap, PHD2, etc. To me, the strength/benefit of iPolar would be to be able to go out for a session without needing to lug a computer along and still be able to get very decent polar alignment via a phone app. How has your workflow changed since using the guidescope? Are you using the iPolar still, or are you finding you just dial in PA with the guidescope?

I am curious what your impressions are on the GEM28 after owning it for several months. I am thinking about purchasing one soon and I am having problems finding opinions on the mount. Thanks for your help.

I've had limited time with mostly because I live in the Northwest and its been one of the cloudiest periods I can recall. I've had maybe 15 nights with it. That being said it has met my needs. The iPolar alignment works great. I get solid outcomes at 45 seconds with an added tracking camera. Most of the time target acquisition is great with two star alignment but every once and a while it does go wonky and ends up in completely the wrong space.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I've got the same lens and has just made a full spectrum mod to my camera on my own. Can't wait to test it. Btw I guess you can modify your camera and still use an external (or clip-in) uv/ir cut filter to make "normal" photos.

Great image of Andromeda. I like that you can use your existing camera equipment. Did you go with the bigger leg diameter on the tripod?

This is the GEM28 but definitely superior to a star trackers in its use in terms of weight capacity and guiding.

Great video. I too have the similar setup but having much trouble when i try to align using the iPolar. Somehow after connecting it to my laptop i didn't get the red cross and the dot on screen. I get a red line at the bottom of screen after i confirm the position 1.Dont know what to do next. Any help will be appreciated.

Such an awesome hobby. I recently started out myself. What i learned so far, is that the rule of 500 is not apliccable at all. I go by the Npf Rule to get Pinpoint stars. Also untracked, i find it really difficult to get exposures that work for stacking. Clear skies fellow Astrophotographer. 🙂
