How to Install a Backsplash
A backsplash is a great low risk way to get your hands dirty trying tile work for the first time. Unlike a bathroom where waterproofing is imperative, this is low stakes and good for practice!

    That is some top notch vinyl flooring if you’re able to just tap it in and have it securely seated without shimmying it in at an angle, like you would have to with most other varieties of vinyl. I guess that’s the “luxury” of this particular vinyl in this video is connecting it at a flat 180°.

    This video is super helpful - thank you! We’re trying for something similar but with a single 36” wide base cabinet and I’m concerned about tipping. Have you noticed any tendency with your design to tip forward or backward? Did you choose a specific amount of overhang on the back to counteract the weight of the open drawers, doors, and unsupported space for the toe kick?

    • @YouCanDIYHome
      @YouCanDIYHome Před 3 dny

      @@davehard4178 we did that overhang based on being able to sit at it with a barstool/leg space preference. But no official formula. It doesn’t tip moving around, but it definitely can if you push all your weight on the overhang ( I tried) we didn’t care because there are no children around but it’s definitely something to consider if you have little kids. One option would be put two decorative pillars at the end of where the overhang is on each side and drop down and put two wheels under there and then the other two under the cabinet? May be a little safer and completely prevent tipping.

    I went with the pinchy as well. The clamps function the same was a rivet does where the metal is mechanically altered and the bent metal is all the strength the seal has. With these pinch clamps, pressure would have to fight multiple spots in the metal to come loose. Anyone who has had to remove one of these knows they get on there pretty good. Pex B and the pinch clamps have allowed me to remove the galvanized pipe in my basement and replace it with Pex. Right now I just have pex installed all the way to the supply pipe. When it is time to remove drywall and replace valves, I can finish it off. Once everything is in place, and I buy the Pex expander tool, I will go back through with all Pex A to avoid using some 90 degree fittings. I used to be a copper guy, but if pex is done right, any failures can be contained under your house to prevent damage. Any repairs or replacements wouldn't require hiring a plumber. The big deal is UV rays from the sun. If your plumbing is in a place with no sun, makes no sense to avoid using Pex.

      I got super lucky in when I was a teenager and was hired to do maintenance and repairs in a trailer court. I knew nothing and learned the basics doing that through high school and college. Then as I wanted to do more specialized projects over the years, I did tons of research and taught myself and eventually got my general contractor license. Like you said, I don't know of anything other than CZcams university :) A book is hard because it would be so hard to know what to include. I have really racked my brain over the years of how to create something- maybe like a DIY forum where people could share projects and photos and ask questions for their projects. But I feel like there is so much invaluable junk on the internet and really don't want to just create something that is junk and not providing immense value. So for now, I just keep making the CZcams videos! But I am SO open to suggestions!

      I don't remember exactly. The biggest thing was that each coat had to set up. So since I installed in the winter, some days I felt like it was too tacky and waited an extra day to do the next layer, as I wanted to heir on the side of caution. It was a couple hours each day for the actual microcement and the sealer was quite as I just sprayed with a squirt bottle and then rolled it. I think it was 3 coats of microcement and 3 coats of sealer so a couple of weeks with wait time. But I was also working on other projects so I kind of came and went to it.

If I'm doing a walk-in shower handicapped access basically with now division between the toilet and shower area, do I need to put backer board on the floor too and all the walls near the shower area OR just shower area? Or is the shower board and roll on membrane going over the subfloor?

    • @YouCanDIYHome
      @YouCanDIYHome Před 12 dny

      You are going to need to waterproof everything that water could potentially get out onto. So in a bathroom this size, if I went curbless, I would likely waterproof the shower walls and out from them a few feet to be safe for splashing, the entire floor, and part of the way up around the perimeter (so maybe like 6 inches up the wall or so).

    Hi, I'm hoping you can help! I have an 8ft tall x 12ft wide wall, already drywalled, textured with orange peel style, and probably has at least 2 or 3 coats of latex (its an older house). It's our living room TV wall and I want to make it look like concrete / cement, like three large 4 x 8 formed panels. I've looked at everything from faux finish painting techniques, to plaster with some extra sand content, but arrived here on your video because I really want it to be at least 3/8" to 1/2" thick to create the deeper vertical seams every 4ft apart as well realistic voids and divots you typically see with various formed concrete slab walls. For this effect I've seen one plasterer use clear plastic sheeting as a face mold..like 1/8" thick (and I think with a light oil spray on the back) which they pressed onto the wall once the plaster was troweled on to create that "faux form effect" if you will to create the voids and pockets. So my main questions are with an old vertical latex painted wall, do I need a specialty primer first, what primer if so, and should I use some sort of lathe grid or mesh backing over the primer? Because I want it to go on fairly thick, I just don't want it to crack or peel off the wall. Lastly, it looks like this turned out really light / white. I want mine dark, like a wet look so I'm thinking add a little colorant, then sealant later on.

    • @YouCanDIYHome
      @YouCanDIYHome Před 12 dny

      Have you thought about making panels and then mounting them on the wall? Have you seen the rigid insulation panels they make for insulating things like basement walls? Hey come in sizes between around 1/2 inch thick to probably 2 inches and are 4X8 feet. I would get the thinnest one and do your treatment on that and mount it. You can get different colors and sheens of the microement. So if you want a wet concrete look, maybe go with a darker gray and a high gloss sheen.

    • @oldowl4290
      @oldowl4290 Před 11 dny

      @@YouCanDIYHome That's not a bad idea at all. And yes, I'm familiar with both types of foam board. I think the thinnest may even be 1/2". And in that case I'd think gluing on a 1/8" to 1/4 sheet of pressboard or luan to it, then water seal that along with a fiber mesh, and then apply a cement epoxy on it ( cement with some fiber and plasticizers) could definitely work..
