Thanks for all the tips. I will be painting my home for the first time in 20 years.
Can you use mahogany stain over the top ?
Uh, I’m not sure exactly what you mean. Stains need to be applied to bare wood. If you use BIN on bare wood then it would seal the wood which would make it impossible to stain.
@@SuperVassarBrothers I just thought cos its a undercoat
Why use a brush rather than a roller? A roller gives a far superior finish compared to the stokes of a brush 🙁
There are too many reasons to list here. There are many applications where you can’t use a roller given the surface your painting. Intricate trim work, certain door types, crown molding, etc…. Also a well executed hand brushed finish is preferable by many folks over a rolled finish. Sometimes it’s a personal preference and sometimes it’s a best practices situation.
I use now zip-lock bagsfor the brushes or if possible keep your rollers in the (half)full paint can. Other option is large glass jars to put roller in and fill up with paint.
That works. We occasionally will wrap roller covers in cling seal if we’re going to reuse later on the same job. If not then we just chuck them.
So you don’t paint the door jam area?
Yes we paint the door jam area. This video was just about the door itself, not the door frame.
Weird question but on an exterior door frame do you paint the hinge side? We tried looking it up but some say you do and others say no due to sticking??
Yes. If you are painting the exterior of a doorframe then you would paint all of it. The main thing with that is to remove the rubber coping / weather stripping then paint the frame / door. Leave the stripping out for at least 24 hours to give the paint time to cure. That’s usually what front doors will stick to, not the frame itself.
Thank you so much!!
My house has a very old YELLOW (80s color) how to color it with white, any idea. I tried 3 quotes but still yellow shed is still there.
If the yellow is bleeding through then I’d recommend priming with BIN shellac then going over it with your finish paint The Best Stain Blocking Primer: What You Need To Know czcams.com/video/MXzq60W6Gts/video.html
Your customers are lucky to have you! I am doing a diy interior paint job at my house and even with my handy man, this is some real sweat labor work. I felt a little bad for my 2 dozen spackle spots. I was thinking to myself, I might as well just re-mud out the wall but after seeing your due diligence, I’m sure I could persist. Thanks for the content
You are most welcome! I’m glad you’re finding it useful!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your channel! Very informative and delightfully entertaining. My question is, what is the best way to remove a brass kick plate from a medal front entry door that is glued and not magnetic attached? The door is glossy black. I am changing it to SW Iron Ore with brush nickel door handles and keypad deadbolt keyless top lock. Also, it has a brass door knocker above the peep hole. Thank you so very much. 😊
I’m glad you’re finding the channel useful! Usually the kick plate is either glued, screwed, or magnetic. Sometimes it’s a combo. If there are screws then remove them with the appropriate screwdriver. If it’s glued then I use a spackle blade / mudding knife to scrape the kick plate off. Once you get back behind the glue it’s pretty easy to pry it off.
@SuperVassarBrothers Thank you so very much for your prompt response. I will follow through. Watching your video on SW Emerald Trim paint and why you strongly recommend it. Keep your great procast coming.
Bro that shit costs 90 bucks a gallon......I use emerald on trim and cabinets but that's about it. It's excellent paint without a doubt but most people won't go for the price point.
If you’re a contractor you’ll be paying closer to $55-$60 a gallon and if you’re not then you can often get it on sale for 40% off which puts it in that same range. It’s priced on par with most other premium walls paints.
I’ve never heard you mention the sherwin Williams premium ceiling paint . It’s like the emerald of ceiling paint. I used in my bathroom, it’s holding up great and I take some hot showers
Yeah…I’ve talked about it in other videos. Its ok. I’m not a huge fan but it works. Promar is still better in my opinion.
@@SuperVassarBrothers well it’s good to know that valspar is basically promar. Thank you
What is best for exterior painting? Flat or Satin ???? we need paint our house from outside it is mixed between aluminum side and brick,,,,,,,, The weather in MI mixed between snow at winter and hot and humid at summer,,,,, please please answer my question thank you so much ❤️🙏

This is a totally different industry. But to prove a point about not gettting what you specifically asked for as the customer, this is like a tattoo artist getting the design for somebody's tattoo and them being set on what they want it to look like, then the artist says that they aren't gonna do that design and instead go with what the artist thinks look better instead of doing the tattoo the client specfically asked for. As a person providing a service to people, there may be some things customers ask for that you don't personally agree with that you personally think could be improved from your POV. But what with being said, if a customer asks for a very specfic way for the service or product to be handled, you gotta go with that in most cases, unless the request in actually gonna create a product or service that won't work at all. The only reason I use tattoos is because I have noticed that tattoo artists are very gatekeepy on the art they do especially when you get the very well known artists that have done work on celebrities, wealthy people, etc. If I pay for a service or product, I want it the way I asked, not your personal preference as the person providing that product or service. Or you can say the same thing about food. If a customer goes to a restaurant and order a steak medium, but the chef thinks that the steak will be better rare, that personal preference shouldn't have any bearing on how that steak comes out of the kitchen. It needs to be the way the customer asked and that's it. But yeah, that's my rant. I can't stand it when people providing a service wanna change what you asked for because they personally don't agree with it. Just do the service I payed you for.
👍
I use the SW pro mar, recently on a textured ceiling and I used a 14” 3/4 nap roller great one coat coverage .
Nice! Promar is still my default ceiling paint 🤙
HI! This was so helpful to watch! I have a question though, is there a reason why you're filling holes AFTER you stain and paint? Should I do this as well or does it not matter if I fill holes first and then do stains/paint? Thanks :)
I fill holes after I apply the stain and the first coat of poly. The reason being is that often if you apply the tinted wood fillers prior to the first coat of poly then the wood filler smudges around and it looks blotchy after you apply the subsequent coats of polyurethane.
@@SuperVassarBrothers That makes sense! Thank you! I just got done sanding, so I'm glad I stumbled across your video this morning! Thank you!
so paint and primer in one is useless?
Pretty much
So can you come do my stairs? Please.
What is best for room paint? Semi gloss or matte
Matte or eggshell for the walls, semi-gloss on the trim and doors and flat for the ceiling
Just picked up 2 gals of promar for $24/gal. Sometimes all you have to do is ask!
That’s excellent! I’m glad you got it at a good price! Happy painting 😁
No gloss huh is it built in
I’m not sure what you mean 🤷♂️
Do you paint the top and bottom edges on new construction ?
Only if they’re visible from some vantage point in the house. There’s a better case for that for exterior doors.
Do you pint the tops and bottoms of interior doors ?? Esp on new build
Not usually.
My favorite neutral color is SW agreeable grey. It’s so easy to change the look of the color by the decor imo.
That’s still the #1 color from Sherwin Williams. We use it quite often 👍
@@SuperVassarBrothers awesome! One of my clients had it at her rental home and after using the brand, I never switched.
This paint falls well short of the 80$ price tag. It doesnt cover well, it runs but somehow doesnt self level very well. Even with dense foam roller leaves texture. Takes 2/3 coats to cover. More coats means more impections
That has not been my experience, but to each his own.
I have enjoyed this video! You guys are hilarious and talking about the names of the animals 😅 every time he named one I'm like okay what is that! But a yak I do know of lol How long do you wait between coats? This other lady's video said 3 hours to do another coat.
I’m glad you enjoy the banter between my brother and I 😄. Dry time depends on the conditions in the room. Usually 2 hours is plenty between coats. If it’s dry to the touch then you’re good to go.
Any thoughts on the new Premium ceiling paint from SW?
It’s ok. Brighter white than Promar, but I don’t like the finish as much. It seams much more likely to picture frame if you don’t roll it tight.
@@SuperVassarBrothers just used it today. Your thoughts are spot on. Thanks for the reply.
Why are you using the light sockets instead of just turning the lights on? Did i miss something?
Nevermind, I got my answer.😂
It’s harsher and more direct light than most folks have in a typical room. We also don’t like the light coming from the ceiling particularly when we’re painting the ceiling. It’s much harder to see what’s going on with the light going directly into your eyeballs.
Do you think this could cover whiteboard paint? If so, should I sand the whiteboard paint first with 220 or something?
For sure it would but I think you could get away with a less intense product. Sand it with 150 grit then hit it with fresh start primer. I’m fairly confident that would get a good bond then you can go over it with your finish paint. Here’s a video on fresh start: Fresh Start: The Best Primer You've Never Heard Of czcams.com/video/jydQq4jHOnE/video.html

You’re most welcome! Thanks for watching! 😁
How long do you have to wait to put tape on the freshly stained and poly’d stair top?
I’d wait 24 hours before taping into it.
Would you prime the brand new siding prior pain. I was going to do two coats of paint but not sure if I should prime the exterior first? Thank you.
If it’s vinyl siding then I wouldn’t prime. I’d use MoorGuard Low Lustre from Benjamin Moore and let it rip.
Sign up for a Pro Account at Sherwin Williams. We get Promar Ceiling Paint for $24 a gallon. Cashmere Low Luster for bathroom ceilings. If you have a big project, ask the manager for a test run on up to 20 gallons for huge savings in $.
I have used just regular ole Promar 200 for ceilings (I always like Promar 200 paints) , I never even saw a promar 200 "ceiling paint" , and I will check it out , if they don't have it , I'll try the valspar ...... I did notice the promar can just said "white" not "extra white" or "high reflective white" , just "white" ...... may I ask , is that "white" a bit "whiter" than "extra white" ??? Because "extra white" is a wee bit "grayish" , and the Behr ceiling white is "too white" looks sterilized !!!! lol ..... Of course one problem I have with ceiling paints is if I do some crown with Emerald "High Hide White" (again a wee grayish not real white) and if the ceiling is "super bright white" it can make the trim look "dingy" ..... Extra White and High Hide White are just a tad "not white enough" in my opinion , just has that wee bit grayish to it ...... which is okay if you use "Extra White Flat" on the ceiling ...... I guess BLM is right "whites are a problem" ... lol
So Promar ceiling is not technically from the 200 or 400 line. It’s just the ceiling paint for the entire Promar line. It is a bit “greyish” but that’s never bothered me or my clients. The valspar is a bit brighter white but still performs well.
@@SuperVassarBrothers thank ya

I’m here for it good sir. Thanks for watching and for the kinds words. I’ve got lots more coming 🫡
I live in Houston, the Promar Ceiling Paint is only available by special order. (I have a pro account)
Interesting. I’ve heard from a few other folks that their SW doesn’t carry it either. I guess it’s store dependent
ok. branching out. How about SW HGTV Ceiling Paint? It performed well in my tests.
I believe I have a can of it somewhere, but I don’t think I’ve actually used it yet. 🤷♂️
This is the best ever. Have used it since 2020. amazing coverage, doesnt splatter much and dries beautifully one coat in most cases.
I had a good experience with it. I was impressed with the lack of splatter.
Thanks for the video! How do these compare these to Benjamin Moore Waterborne and Super Hide? The Waterborne applied and covered very well, but was quite messy and had more surface texture than we expected.
use the Valspar ultra and you will never go back.
I'm not a huge fan of any of the current Benjamin Moore ceiling paints. In my experience Valspar Ultra is a better product. Like I said in the video, it performs similarly to Promar Ceiling paint which is my current favorite ceiling paint.
Superhide and the Promar 400/ceiling line are similar. Your experience with the Waterborne is standard for that product. I won't use it without thinning it a bit, and applying with a microfiber roller.
@@thec4ke Ah… that’s smart… the staff at the Spectrum Paint store told me to use a half-inch woven roller. Thinning paint sounds a bit above my skill grade... I imagine that requires quite a bit more precision than watering down drywall mud. I’m hoping to use the super hide for the rest of the ceilings. Appreciate your reply!
@@SuperVassarBrothers Thank you for responding. You still like the SuperHide, don’t you? Or did the reformulations you talked about change your opinion of it as it did with the regal select?
Great Advice. I'm going to try the 14" roller on my basement remodel.
14's are awesome if you've got a big surface to roll. Good luck with your project!
What type of wood is that? Oak?
I believe they were oak. I'm not positive because I didn't do the install, I just did the finish work.
Hello - Loving all your videos! I have not done very much painting in my 38 years and I'm about to embark on re-painting ALL the ceilings, walls, trim (interior and exterior), doors, kitchen cabinets, and in some places the wood floors of my fairly dirty 119 years old, 750 sq ft house. You've done a few videos on doors, which I plan to use for painting my cabinets. Would you please consider posting a video on painting kitchen cabinets specifically? Also, have you ever re-painted old metal kitchen cabinets in gloss or hi-gloss? What about painting ugly stained and sealed dirty honey oak discount home-improvement type cabinets that have never been painted before? Have you done a kinda-rotted-at-the-bottom garage door? A-bit-crumbly exterior trim that you don't have the cash to replace and want to prevent from totally rotting out until you do have the money/time to replace it? I'm pregnant with twins (!!) and trying to get most of this done before it gets too cold to paint in MN in October. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your straightforward and entertaining videos!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos. Sounds like you've got quite a set of projects ahead of you! Ok so here we go with some answers to your questions. For the cabinets, I'd recommend priming them first with something like Fresh Start primer from Benjamin Moore. I did a video recently on that product and it's a great primer. Make sure you sand the surfaces of the cabinets first before you prime. I'd go with 150 grit. Then you can use a hybrid trim paint like Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel or Advance from Benjamin Moore. Both are solid options. As far as the crumbling exterior or rotted wood. You can patch those areas with MH ready patch. That'll get you patched through until you can get the wood replaced. I'd also recommend clicking this link that I'll put in this response. You'll get our PDF of recommended products, but more importantly you'll get on our email list. We are about to launch our DIY course and service that is geared towards helping DIYers paint and maintain their homes and I can better address your questions inside of that course. Also, congratulations on your twins!! I hope everything goes smoothly with that. My wife and I are expecting our second any day now.
