The Sword of Ecological Dynamics: Deandre Corbe
8 Months ago I moved across the country to work on the most exciting project of my career thusfar- a video distilling thousands of pages of science into a single, groundbreaking hour that unpacks and reconstructs a revolutionary understanding of movement.
Throughout this project, I've had the pleasure of training with someone who has truly impressed me through his actions, words, and perspective: Deandre Corbe. And in April, we finally got to sit down for an in-depth interview.You may know D from his recent win at the West Coast Trials. D is first and foremost an athlete, a grappler, and a man on a mission. But many of even the most incredible athletes don’t have alot of valuable information to share.
D is different, and he’s different in a number of notable ways. He’s introspective, intentional, intelligent, and wise beyond his years. While he uses everyday language in this interview and avoids alot of scientific terminology, don't underestimate the depth of his knowledge. He's well-versed in the foundational science behind his training and has developed a number of very impressive evidence-backed protocols to optimize his performance, through years of tinkering, refinement, practice, and study.
But The craziest part of D’s story isn’t his 15 years of martial arts, or how he went from getting submitted by blue belts to untouchable in just four years. The crazy part is that he did it while also being a full time data-analyst for the navy.
D is probably the most disciplined athlete I’ve ever met, and I’m excited for you to hear from him in his first long form interview. He’s even going to teach you how to functionally use this new approach, ecological dynamics, to learn his signature rear triangle. I think there’s something to learn here for anyone pursing mastery in their own domain.
If you want to see another interview with D after ADCC, let us know in the comments, because this is the tip of the iceberg of what he has to share. And don't miss my interview with Greg Souders, the man who coached D to this incredible level, and the upcoming full monster video/documentary on this channel about ecological dynamics and BJJ.

A Better Definition of Movement: My Reaction to Ido Portal on the Huberman Podcast

    Are any of you familiar with the Hip-Hop artist Kool Moe Dee? Broken bone ?? : "Go See The Doctor." RSI ??: " Go See The Doctor." Pinced nerve ?? : "Go See The Doctor." I know that this sounds like the " Chicken or The Egg" . Try to find a competent physiotherapist who isn't a dogmatist. A good sign is his willingness to explain the functionality of the injured body-part AND the willingness to LEARN about your sport, hobbies, job... DON'T do this stuff by yourself. Mostly because almost none of us have enough knowledge of human anatomy. Self-Diagnosis can seriously mess-up your body.

    • @BrenVez
      @BrenVez Před dnem

      Did you watch neither my first video about pain science nor this one? A big thing is fighting against the narrative that peoples bodies are so weak and fragile that we require an expert assessment/alignment before we can do anything. Self diagnosis can be extremely inaccurate and misguided when we try to get overly specific, biomechanical, and posture based. When we work with pain and function as i describe, for MSK injuries, we can trust patient experience- someone with knee pain during extension and walking isn't going to falsely diagnose themselves as having hip pain.

  • @orlandomarchena4885

    20.00 minutes: What you're referring to as: " becoming instead of trying" is also called "Flow-State." A prominent example of this is the Flamenco. The main reason that the Flamenco is so difficult is that it requires Flow-State. I have NO idea how Flamenco dancers can reach Flow-State on such a regular basis. I am fortunate enough to have reached Flow-State three times in my life and can say that it is a FANTASTIC level of awareness.

    I would love this approached to be distilled down into a presentation or lecture so we can create our own practices. Please explain to me the game types simply, like if you wanna develop your "capability" play a terminal game where there's an end goal (win condition). capability = win condition. and to develop capacity = continuous game etc. what's capability?? what's capacity? what's the difference ? I mean no disrespect at all here, I just want to understand how to create these games to incorporate it. I desperately want to incorporate this style of training but unsure how. i wish there was a rubric or something.

      My next video should explain this in more than enough depth :). Still, the most basic answer I could give you right now would be that you're assuming we learn the techniques when we see them taught to us, not when we attempt to solve the problem that creates the need for 'techniques' in the first place. This isn't completely wrong, but it isn't far. The research generally shows that we learn much faster with tasks than with expert prescriptive instruction and feedback.

    I only spent two days at Standard, which isn’t enough to fully grasp all the task-based games and constraints they use in every starting position, but it opened up my eyes to several things I’m doing wrong: - I don’t spar with resistance enough (hands down this was the most eye-opening, especially since I already train almost everyday… they are extremely efficient with their class time) - I’m too satisfied with accepting bottom position and need to wrestle up more - I have a huge skills gap when it comes to “in-between” positions that have no name in traditional BJJ - I get tunnel vision when I spar using the “enter the system” approach or try chaining techniques together, which stunts my ability to problem solve in the moment - I need to re-define what my objective should be in every starting position - I was getting too fixated on Coach Greg’s academic explanation of the ecological approach, and the best way to learn it was to visit and experience it first hand. It’s the easiest way to learn BJJ I’ve ever tried.

    Speaking of the training environment, last month when I visited Standard, those mats were the slipperiest mats I’ve ever trained on once they got sweaty. Idk if that’s intentional or a coincidence, but it made it extra hard to wrestle up. Wrestling up seemed easier when I got back home on our mats that don’t have that glossy finish.

I don’t consume a lot of videos produced by Bren so I don’t know if he does interviews like this often but if this is one of the first times doing something like this I would consider studying other personalities that do longer form interviews to get a good grasp on how to keep the flow of a conversation going without having to say “right” “mhmm” “yeah” “sure” every few seconds. Deandre talks about not having a lot of conscious thought during training around 2h:10m. I have first hand experience of the quieting of the mind that comes from this type of training. I used to have so much chatter going on in my brain when I trained and after a short stint training at Standard, it just disappeared. Plus my Jiujitsu improved by leaps and bounds. Standard is like a crucible time-machine. Thanks for this interview to both Bren and Deandre. It felt like I got to listen in on a personal and beautiful heart to heart between two friends.
