    I have a butterfly garden done all in pots. I don't understand the tiny amount of milkweed? One tiny plant planted amongst those others will not feed all the caterpillars that you'll get on that one little plant. They'll starve for sure. You need 2-3 containers full of milkweed plants just to feed them all. This isn't really a good way to teach people how to start a butterfly garden in pots. The host plant needs pots to themselves and the nectar plants need pots to themselves to have a successful potted butterfly garden. But I enjoyed watching your video.

    On my south-facing back slope (coastal San Diego), I have 8 Toyons (5 - 7 years old). At this time of year (December) the berries are profuse, bright red and contrast nicely with the dark green foliage. The plants vary from 5 - 8 feet in height and width (they serve as an excellent screen for the house from the street below) and were watered over the last year but once a month -- with sprinklers -- after the winter rains subsided. They are attractive, grow quickly, highly drought tolerant and only require occasional trimming/shaping. Perfect.

    I was hoping Mike would get back to the sage at the end of the video to continue telling the differences in planting. Is it only keeping a flat basin and planting it at a slightly higher level than the manz?

    Testing . . . testing . . . testing . . . Mike is great; always has been good at communicating--much better than I am. The method should work fine, especially for those who don't want to watch their gardens go through their regular stress cycles. The only modifications I might suggest is that people get used to using a probe to "feel" resistance in the soil profile. Better yet, get a soil sampler that will go deeper (or rent them). In order for water to penetrate to the greatest depth with the lowest loss to evaporation, without risking the adverse effects of higher temperatures at/near the surface where "feeder" roots are, and without overstimulating growth, resulting in some pretty rank-looking plants (e.g., California holly and other plants that stay green in the summer because they are "deep-rooted". This only happens if there are pores or fissures at least as big as the root diameter throughout the soil profile) and have physiological adaptations to reduce water loss in the hotter periods when water is scarce. The drought-deciduous plants can SOMETIMES benefit from cutting back in April or May, when they first start to dry up and lose lower leaves but the growing tips are still active. This cuts fire risk greatly (provided one does not leave the trimmings or other "mulch." My Indian grandmother incorporated "mulch" into the soil, but did not leave it on the surface. A healthy ecosystem is partly defined by "resistance to invasion," as Dr. Ewel suggests, so top mulches not only leave fuel for embers, they interfere with plant reproduction, especially Nature's "mulch," the cryptobiotic soil crust community, which stops weeds, produces available nutrients, and does not burn AT ALL. I'll mercifully stop here . . .

    This has a criminally low amount of views. I have a northern facing wall I have been growing canna Lily in, full shade but lots of bright reflected light so the bloom crazy and I don't have to water as much with the shady soil. Looking for something that can replace them and still get that 3-4 ft spreading coverage to fill the planter. Maybe yerba mansa? But I'd like a bit of mixed color in there. Any suggestions?

  • @waynetyson3822
    @waynetyson3822 Před rokem

    Cuttings often lead to poor root development. Nursery culture can mask this problem. Can it make it worse? For example, can luxury conditions slow root development. At the other extreme, containers can restrict root development leading to such silly-looking things as an apparently well-developed top, with a much smaller root ball in the shape of a smaller container inside a larger one, usually seen when the growing medium falls away when the plant is removed from the container. I hope that tissue culture will prove to be effective in replacing both cuttings and seed-collecting. Just make sure that tissue is collected from a large number of plants to mimic the genetic diversity of the wild populations. Will, say, an oak from tissue culture develop the same kind of root initial and tap root that an acorn will? If not, we may have to stick to acorns, as getting initial root depth (to continuously available water) quickly is essential in responsible oak woodland restoration. Will you please comment?

    I stopped at 00:07. Gotta go now. I'll finish it later. My favorite is LIVING "mulch," aka the cryptogamic soil crust community of living (usually non-vascular) native/indigenous plants and their associated organisms. Ooo, ooo, ooo, what a little bit of surface compaction can doo-ooo-ooo! Non-combustible, beautiful, weed-proof, erosion- (but not disturbance-) proof, part of the nutrient cycle, interesting, cheap (zero) and easy. 😀
