I was hoping Mike would get back to the sage at the end of the video to continue telling the differences in planting. Is it only keeping a flat basin and planting it at a slightly higher level than the manz?

is there a reason why he didn't loosen the soil around root ball of potted plants being transplanted? a.k.a ' teasing the rootball' I thought it was beneficial to loosen roots of a plant in a pot being transplanted to ground so they don't continue growing in circular direction

I’ve read that with California native plants that their roots are sensitive to disturbance, so it is recommended that you just plop them in. Although, I have also read that natives can handle a little bit of teasing. I’ve planted all my plants with a little tease and they’ve done fine.

That was great, thank you! Are there reasons to choose to dig 1.5x deep vs not any deeper than root ball?

is "organic fertilizer" in this situation the same as compost? or worm castings? please define this. thank you.

Hi, Michelle. You're correct! Those are both organic fertilizers that will work. Chicken manures and other organically derived fertilizer blends are available at garden stores. As Mike demonstrates in this video, we also like to add a kick of bone meal which has other nutrients that plants love.

just bought a manzanita shrub to plant & read that they don't like rich soil. fertilizer is also discouraged because it might make the manzanita grow too quickly, making it vulnerable to disease.
does this matter? I'll remember to water as i plant. thank you.

For the most part you can plant a manzanita into ground without amendments or fertilizer. Unless your soil is dead, you should be fine.

I'm now encountering some dead patches on my manzanita. the nursery said that the symptoms for over-watering were the same as for under-watering, so I'm so confused. i went from watering once every 3 weeks the 1st couple of times to watering a 1/2 gallon twice a week based on their recommendation. i can't tell if it's helping or not, as rhe death rate seems to be continuing. I'm beside myself 'cause i don't know what to do.
