Harman/Kardon 150 Quad Receiver from 1971
My Harman/Kardon 150+ is getting its semi-yearly workout tonight. Quadrophonic 4x30WPC or 2x70WPC in bridged stereo mode.
From around 1971. Apparently this model had overheating issues and was replaced by the 900+.
This thing just wants to work! 100% original except for the dial and VU meter lamps. This is twin transformer powered with 4 identical amplifier driver boards. Performed a re-bias six months ago and all boards were significantly lower out of spec.
It’s loaded with polystyrene capacitors, which apparently typically don’t go bad. But it certainly has its share of electrolytics and I can only imagine most are out of spec. Overall the power is a little starved when the bass kicks in, and the dial lights exhibit significant dimming, so I hold off a little on turning it too loud.
Tone circuit is a little uneven between left and right channels when increasing and decreasing, so I run the controls flat and front end the audio with some EQ.
Has speaker fuses, and I use one amperage less, just for insurance.
I had a 75+ in college, and I ended up blowing it out by putting higher amperage fuses in. This is before I cared for electronics.
What strange is this particular receiver does not seem to put out any DC upon power up. But the 75+ I used to have and others have mentioned that you can get significant DC for the first 5 to 10 seconds.

Sansui G-9000 night. I rotate equipment weekly in the man cave and my prized possession is in use tonight after a 6 month hiatus. 160WPC. Audio jewelry, excellent engineering, and superb performance from a 46 year old unit based on serial #. Interestingly, I’ve seen these come down in value because the Pioneer SX-1980 (270 WPC) and the somewhat unobtanium Technics SA-1000 (330WPC) seem to be pr...

OK, this is going to be a shot in the dark at best. This is a Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) deck which was made approximately between 1992 to 1994. Some of the components are shared among every brand and manufacturer of DCC and made by Phillips. And those shared components...

Came across yet another variant of the RadioShack Realistic/Optimus Minimus 7 speakers at a thrift store today. Here’s a comparison of three different enclosures and grills, but yet apparently with the same speakers. And the third set has port holes. Note, this is more of a visual determination. Perhaps I will take the drivers out and the crossovers and compare at some point.

Why would I want a Technics by Panasonic SA-1000 330 WPC when I could have this RA-6100 12 watts per channel wonder at .8 THD? Great job on the video.I just wanted to comment on the VSX D1S . The output is 130 watts per channel @8 ohms for the fronts. I like your choice on the 9700 S. I have owned the 9900 S and had the experience of it only playing in direct mode. I’ve owned about 7 D1S and enjoyed them through the years. I currently own a VSX 9700 S and I’m totally enjoying it. It’s a monster and a good looker too.

Or where can I get them? Also, I'm glad you turned on the internal speaker. Mine are quite noisy. I'm going to clean the electronics and hook it up to my receiver and see what happens. Nice video.

It’s still so strange to watch TV shows and movies made before 2001 that include the iconic shot of the Brooklyn Bridge with the Twin Towers in the background. It feels like we somehow imagined 9/11 or that it was itself a movie and those buildings and people aren’t really gone. I’m glad they exist as a memorial so that we never forget.

Kudos to Don Dahler for reporting accurately on that fateful, tragic day. Most, if not all if his reporting (which had to involve a bit of surmising), was right on the money, even down to what caused the South Tower to collapse, as most witnesses and reporters incorrectly thought it was a bomb or even another plane that took down the South Tower, but Don immediately got it right, that it was not a bomb at the lower level or a second plane, and instead it was from the tremendous fire damage to the steel infrastructure of the top floors falling onto the one below it, creating even a heavier weight that collapsed the next floor below that one, etc, etc, etc,

Why do we watch every year these recordings of that most horrific day? Because we can not forget, and we want to again be close to all those in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in those two planes who we have lost. We want to remember the NYC firefighters and police officers. We want to remember what we were before 9/11.
