  • This is a follow up to the post I made last week. Certainly learned a lot over the last week but finally got this Pioneer SX 980 working perfect.
Preamp had a bad transistor in the left channel audio static and extreme DC and also one of those little 10uf solid blue drop capacitors was bad. Anyways, the tone board and preamp has been recapped and transistorized. Was working great, but then I realized it just was not getting the power it should and I had trouble biasing.
Discovered that a transistor supporting the 16 V rail was backwards and the rail was around 5 V, since reversing the transistor properly the audio is great, and the biasing and idling current adjustment was completed spot on.
Anytime I work on a unit like this, I learn and now I know how to work on the Pioneer SX-x80 series.

Great job on the restoration! These receivers are like classic cars, they are the best of the best and deserve to be preserved for generations to come.

Thank you so much Mark! The hard work this used to get was from DJ-ing! I originally bought it for my home use, but the power and sound were so incredible that I started to do side jobs as a DJ. That also accounts for the broken power supply switch (one of the times loading it into and out of my car caused that). Wonderful to hear it agian after sitting idle for 25 years!

You are going to be very happy. These classic receivers are like golden retrievers, they just want to please you. Exceptional build and sound quality that no longer exists.
