The Risks of Proton Pump Inhibitors: How acid reflux medication can affect you in the long term
PPIs are powerful antacid drugs used in the treatment of Gastro-oesophageal reflux, providing relief from symptoms such as Regurgitation, Dyspepsia and heartburn. However, as one of the most prescribed drugs in the western world, with millions of people taking them, more studies are finding potential side effects from PPI’s. When the acidic levels in the stomach are reduced it can risk the decrease of diversity in the gut microbiome, leading to diseases such as minimally understood SIBO, with side effects such as digestive discomfort and bloating. In this video Mr Nicholas Boyle explains the potential ramifications of long term PPI use and why people should consider them.

I had an oespohageal stricture (had it >10 years), no symptoms except the obvious swallowing issues. It was dilated last July and since the procedure, I have suffered with constant chest and sinus issues. I have no other symptoms, no heartburn, no regurgitation, no soreness , occasionally wind after eating. I am a dietitian and implemented all the lifestyle adjustments which made some difference but I used to run competitively and cannot run due to the constant respiratory symptoms. I think I have LPR, my gastroenterologist says LPR is over diagnosed and that I have normal reflux and need PPIs long term. The PPIs helped initially which I think was the oesophagitis healing effect but I still have symptoms. I am considering reflux surgery and I wish I had not agreed to the dilatation of the stricture.

My surgeon would not do any procedure without adequate testing. There are 4 tests necessary. One is a barium swallow, 2 and 3 is endoscopy with bravo 2 pH testing inserted ,4th is mamometry. You need a proper diagnosis before doing anything. Most people feel a burning sensation not pressure.

This is great. I have had reflux for years, but in last three months, it has gone to another stage. I have lost 9kg in a month, and despite being on PPI medication, I am in constant agony, with wind, burping, sternum pain, reflux into mouth, etc. A gastroscopy procedure showed no significant damage but a weak lower oesophagal sphincter. I was told I need to stop a huge range of foods, drink only water, and take medication for life. I cannot and will not accept this as a solution. Finding out about this new innovation has given me hope. The fundoplication and Linx options seem to bring as many issues as they solve, so this seems like a game changer. I will be speaking to my gastroenterologist in 10 days about this here in Finland, and if they don't even know about it yet, I'll be coming back to the UK for this if it is considered appropriate. These innovations and the surgeons who do this stuff are the true heroes of society.

How are you doing today with the acid reflux symptoms, are they still present or are they gone? I have suffered for 9 years with GERD and Im agoraphobic because it makes my sensory processing disorder worse, im on the autism spectrum and ADHD which seems to have a correlation between the 2, I have wanted surgery desperately but I'm afraid of the cost and I fear just going to the doctor, 7 years ago I had an endoscopy and biopsy of my esophagus and stomach and the dreaded answer came back from the gastro enterologist that my stomach looked fine and no scaring of my esophagus but I was hoping he would find a problem so I could have surgery to put me out of suffering, the cost of the test was $2500 that I had to pay out of pocket so I gave up with test and figured I just have to be miserable the rest of my life, I was 26 when I got GERD, I feel pain all the time and standing up after a meal doesn't even help, I'll get bloating indigestion and acid reflux.
