Sir Roger was very pleasant to listen to - even if he ummed and aahed a bit. But this guy is awful! He's incapable of finishing even one sentence without protracted umming and aahing. This is leavened with "you know' again and again. NO, I DON'T KNOW! THAT'S WHY I'M LISTENING! He's got some good ideas but he makes them as inaccessible as possible. He's an appalling public speaker. Given this, he might do his audience the courtesy of preparing his speech, if necessary by writing it out in full and reading it. One hopes that, in future, the organisers of the Roger Scruton Memorial Lectures will engage speakers who know how to speak.
How many languages does Mr.Thiel speak? AI language model ?
The Romans recognised the benefits of the strong man in the form of a Dictator, when democratic processes failed due to embedded corruption. This dictator was granted a term of office, free of prosecution, and with extensions of power if necessary. It worked.
The last thing that D Trump is, is 'authoritarian' !
Very fond of Tom Holland and Roger Scruton.
what do you kow about conservation palm oi companies run by brita in america like cargill you love to live on the worlikg class you fool nobody all all pitching of the best men who die in the last war like my uncle l
Wow! - something on which I agree with PH; Scottish Independence (I'm English). It seems to me the Tories spent 2010 - 2019 taking revenge for their cultural defeats by ruining public services and selling anything profitable (utilities, the Post Office, tech companies) to foreign interests, European or American. Otherwise they have just been blundering around wastefully (HS2) and they have the nerve to accuse Labour of lacking a plan. Give me a platform and I will bemoan the disinvestment in the future of this country in the form of child poverty rates and underfunded schools. Immigration has not caused those phenomena.
Douglas Murray is amazing. This is one of his best speeches.
World's a, de Torquemada intolerant, trade police state, straightjacket tightened to a t. How can you be creative when the vast majority of people around you are not creative? Three r's old hat today but one, economic resources. 'It's all chiefs no' journeyone fiction writers these days.
I'm glad he talked about Henry George. "Progress and Poverty" is one of the best books I've ever read.
13:32 "a sort of crony capitalism racket...", I've been calling the real estate industry the realty racket for at least a decade, noting the trilateral relationship of the house building industry, the house reselling industry and of course the house taxation industry, AKA the various levels of government that feed primarily on land and realty tax/fees revenues.
This guy is my hero
Stop speaking in generalities. Any leader, regardless of political affiliation, needs to evaluate the facts. Does the policy work? If not, stop doing the policy. Stop enabling government corruption and stifling money printing. Stop letting the loonies run the asylem.
I love Lionel!
Most impressive, from me over here in Manhattan. Grateful for the voice of Mr Hitchens.
OMG doom and gloom Hitchens again, how can he pull Britain down in this speech I wonder..
Bad education destroys the country.
Absolutely embarrasses hannah to prove his point
Thiel.... another deep state tool. Don't trust him or his associates
AR's take on Special Relationship and Russia is utterly weak and modern English Tory nonsense.
I want Douglas Murray to read bedtime stories so I can fall asleep to his voice. The small shots of poetry he does for The Free Press are too short!
Awesome speech. If one wants an organized Good Society, it must be a hierarchical society with wise men and women at the highest echelons of the hierarchy. We do not have this today. To defend this Good Society a strong military and industrial complex must exist with the Warfighter held in the highest esteem. The ancient ideas of glory and conquest shall return. A true distinction between friend and enemy will return. The absurd liberal principles of state sovereignty, international law, and failed U.N. mechanisms for resolving conflicts will all go away. The notion that a weak state can be allowed to attack a powerful neighbor without any recourse is unsustainable.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Douglas. Douglas Murray is one of those Gentlemen that brings about greatness in others. I respect and admire him a great deal. Thank You.
I can't believe Peter crossed paths with Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson twice in his career and Al won out both times. What could have been! If Question Time and The Daily Telegraph went with Peter instead, how different would Britain be today? (Edit: I forgot "de")
The subtleties just seemed to go right over the heads of the audience - did they turn up for the wrong gig? So many witty comments fell on apparently deaf ears.
Daniel Hannan typifies the worst aspects of fake conservatism. Hilarious considering Peter spent the previous hour railing against it.
And dear Douglas appears to have a cold....and still over delivers.
If u dont believe in diversity, then u dont believe in Heaven. Race is human-made. Mostly by agents with agendas. The US and its diversity is the best thing going on the entire planet for peace and tolerance and respect for other cultures. Its greed and selfishness that continue to inject cracks into this melting pot. We should continue to strive for the ideal and not give into evil racism. No matter how professional, eloquent, & logical it sounds. Eve found the snake very trustworthy and convincing as well. All that division does is create suspicious "others". I'm American. I love being American. I love Americas diversity and richness of cultures and I can freely and publicly celebrate those cultures with that culture. America, as an idea, is the closest thing to Heaven we have on Earth.
Peter Thiel as per usual makes you think and provokes deep thought.
A blathering well-spoken, well-dressed conspiracy theorist for the upper classes.
Starts at 10:26
It's incredible how tilted Daniel Hannon was by the speech. He then questioned Peter Hitchens like a left-wing TV presenter, instead of a 'conservative'. Which pretty much proved the point of everything that Hitchens said.
Hannan came off as so hollow, following that impassioned speech from Peter.
Scruton allegedly sexually abused young boys. Now that he's dead. These victims will not receive justice.
Britain? He's preaching to the choir! The cult of Thiel; who's company, Palantir, works with the CIA,NSA and make his fortune in the surveillance and murder business. An unapologetic Monopolist, who's money shaped elections with his brilliant technology. Playing the "woke" card was invented by people of his ilk. By creating infighting, it's very effective at division and discouraging efforts to organize in class interest. Superficial tactics like DEI acts as an insurance policy against the next revolution, but it is unraveling.
Oxford comma? Pry it out of my cold dead hands. God bless clarity.
_"At that time, 80% of British subjects were neither white nor Christian."_ 1:06:49 THEY WERE LIVING IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES, WITH THEIR OWN PEOPLE.
The trolls have landed. Amusing to read such criticism of Roberts from such ignoramuses. And rather funny how many of all these alleged different people are not aware of the difference between "he's" and "his"....
This should be mandatory listening for everyone.
It is good to know there are educators like you
This nobody woulda remained a nobody but for his brother, Christopher.
I had to listen to this like 3 times Peter is so information dense is a marvel of efficiency
Speechless.
Thiel always throws some fascinating curve balls into any conversation...
Truss was a scapegoat. The alternatives are all worse.
Using the word 'progress' is highly misleading.
US suburban houses are the problem, not the solution. Awful single family homes in dormitories with zero community that require you to drive to do anything due to dumb zoning laws. Europe is better, you don't usually need a care, you live in medium density areas not single family homes with zero amenities or community around it.
US suburban housing is owned by 4 Corporations, who have become the new landlord class.
Single family housing is one of the worst things about the USA, it's why you have endless suburbs, no communities, endless traffic, stroads and you have to drive to get a pint of milk, go to a restaurant, watch a movie, see a friend, basically everything. Europe has medium density housing instead of endless single family suburbs. It's better.
Such an extraordinary experience! The beautiful lecture of Douglas Murray and powerful performance of Kevin Spacey left me feeling the words of Roger Scruton quoted by Murray come to life, as if the computer screen I was watching this on became THAT window - "....we suddenly come across a window through which we catch sight of another brighter world, a world to which we belong but cannot enter".
