    Isn't stay-stitching and under stitching the same thing? Your dress is cute on you. However, I like my dresses much longer; and I have to have a higher neck line. I'm 76 years old and I'm trying to hide what time has changed. You are young and beautiful.

    • @missmatti
      @missmatti Před 6 dny

      @@arvettadelashmit9337 😌❤️ No, stay and understitching is actually not the same! I used to think that though.. Stay-stitching is used to stabilize necklines and curves to prevent the fibers from stretching in the construction process. Understitching is used as a finishing technique to prevent fabric on the fold e.g. a neckline facing or a waistband from flipping over to the right side and lay flat. You could achieve a similar result with a top/edge stitch too, but then it’s visible on the right side unlike understitching that creates no visible seam. Hope that helps! 😊

    This is such a fun concept for a video! The sizing referred to in step 2 isn’t about the size of the garment. It’s the sizing that is applied to the fabric to make the fiber stronger during weaving. At least I think that’s why it’s used. (A.I. could probably explain it to us.) It’s a good idea to wash it out because it can affect the drape and hand of your fabric.

    A wise lady told me when I started Sewing that people would ask me to make things for them. She said that if I sew for money that I must like either the fabric or the pattern/project. She said that most people just want to get something for free, likely bring substandard materials, will not appreciate the amount of time nor the skills required, and will be critical and not completely satisfied. I don’t sew for money, I don’t do alterations, and I hem only my husband’s pants. There are lots of places that do alterations at a very reasonable price and do a very good job! I used to give them a list of phone numbers, but now I just tell them to look it up. I wonder how they would like it if I asked them to cook for me or clean my house or do my flowerbeds because I really like their work?🎉

    I just turned 50, but started upcycling in my teens. I've always done it because I have very strong ideas about what I want to wear and it never exists. It used to be because I didn't have much money and it slowly turned into "OMG! Look how badly that's made" or "What poor quality fabric that's made with!". Happily, now there are resources available to help create my ideas better. The YT community is great for that. Thanks for playing your part in ghat.

    Another old lady here! I learned to sew back in the days when everyone took Home Ec in school, and I have always liked being able to have what I wanted to wear instead of whatever the fashion authorities were willing to offer. Having an older body makes it even more important to be able to make my own clothes so that I can have interesting, flattering things to wear. The added advantage of upcycling is that it gives me access to a better quality of fabrics and notions.

What makes designers design clothes for young women (and try to tell me they were made for women of my age.) Those fashions do not work for me (or on me). I have no choice but to upcycle my old clothes. It is a good thing that I like to do it (for myself). I'm not taking on the biggest part of the Senior Citizen Centers (which are old women like me).

    I have seen a handmade vintage quilt tuned into a dressing gown, but and it's a very big but, it was for theatre and the designer spent nearly £200 for the quilt at a house sale. The quilt was quite damaged and did not work as a quilt-so i see no problem with that. I have been shopping in charity shops 9thrift stores) since 1976- I have NEVER seen a handmade quilt in a charity shop-so I think many of the complaints are not realistic. When I shop in a charity shop I look purely at the fabric initially-only if the fabric is good quality and in good condition will I consider-I don't look at size or anything else. Good materials are quite rare ,actually so i wouldn't hold back because of the size.

    I wonder, would it be possible to only replace the underarm area somehow? I've recently become allergic to fragrances & cannot get the deodorant off of all my coats & jackets. I've already had to get rid of all my clothes.😞 It would be so much easier & affordable if I could figure out how to do that. I thought maybe I could cut that part out & replace it, but how would I keep it from fraying?🤔 I bought this fray glue, but it has fragrance in it.😖
