    Bryan, I can tell you the appeal of Friday the 13th for many of us - it was the buubies. I wasn't even a horror fan - but when I was 13 or 14, my friends and I would always watch the latest Friday the 13th movie. Keep in mind this was pre-internet days

      @power2thepanel Před 2 dny

      yeah that makes sense. I remember in one of them he was hooked on a chain and drowned and my brother and his friends were arguing if it was upside down or rights up. This was like 1989, if you know which one it was. PS pre-internet argument

    I've been listening to all of the pods & have really been enjoying it so far. Really loved the Drawing Board debut especially. That said, as an outsider hearing the story, he didn't sound like he was jumping you or being angry, just asking a question about who the post was directed at or about. Unless there is something missing from the retelling of that initial comment, then to me it could be something as simple as a matter of interpretation, then it went south very quickly obviously. Both sides get their feelings hurt, then both sides go on the attack, so it stops being about whatever the actual conversation was about & turns into a game of one-upsmanship when it never needed to. It is incredibly easy to misread tone in internet posts. I have done it many times myself where I thought someone was talking shit but they were actually joking. This is why I pretty much only talk to people I actually know online now.

    You guys ever do blind contours? It’s almost like working on one of those tablets. I’ll never draw digitally because I feel like I lose a huge part of why I like drawing to begin with, but it’s not that bad to use one of those tablets to do digital colors or use the lasso tool with a little more accuracy 12:50

    I had a Jeff Lemire type idea I’m working on that combines one Marvel character group with two DC characters in a story that ties all three together.

    I'm starting to understand that idea of pushing into discomfort. For me, that means spending a year, really focusing on my projects. I have so much fun playing in all the indie/underground anthologies and whatnot, I think because doing a 1-5 page short comic for an anthology is easy and less intimidating than committing to doing longer works... but my own stuff can't stay on the back burner forever! I have put out a couple solo books but I have many more on deck and they can't wait forever!

    👏👏👏👏 let's go Nick I feel that and I love that men are getting this conversation on tough love. Literally everyone I know where I come from used tough love as an excuse to not check themselves. I had an ex who pointed out it was like my family was raised like dogs and I can see that. I'm with you on the standing up to bullies BC. This is being done with love, empathy, but not FUCKING around. I'm all here for it. Respect, Brian. Thank you for the mentorship 🙏

    Definitely a lot to take away from this experience in a positive light. Certainly, having patience, grace and a pathway to forgiveness are key. It’s not easy given that the internet has no real culture for healthy communication, like somehow you can say whatever you want here that you wouldn’t say in public.

    The British comic Viz started out selling copies at local punk gigs, then put their comic into indie record and newsagent shops (there being far more of such things in those days). By 1990 they were outselling almost everything in Britain, never mind comics, they were almost beating the TV guide! It's cooled off now, of course, but they still made their money (there was also a raft of imitators, often collectively dismissed as "crap", but they had their moments, a blog called Two Headed Thingies has many reviews). Around 2005 I wanted to get in on the action by selling a comic / zine at gigs around Cambridge, but never did in the end. If I could go back, eh?

    • @michaelmartin9022
      @michaelmartin9022 Před 15 dny

      Actually most of the early existence of Viz was a trip, now that I think about it... -The head editor was arrested by counter-terrorist police for publishing a letter about a bomb threat. He then nearly published it again in a reprint! -They had a feud with a children's comic, who had to attempt to satirise Viz material but without swearing. -One of the imitators tried to sell copies in the high street of their city. He literally couldn't give it away and got a huge fine for littering. -One of the imitators tried to sue another on very shaky legal grounds, and got bankrupted by the court costs. The irony of a ripoff accusing another ripoff not being lost on anyone else.
