As a tent camper for the last 50+ years I always buy a tent that has a canopy attached to it. Hanging an overhang let’s you stay dry before entering the tent and let’s you sit outside when it rains.

Okay, I’m a trifle antisocial, but I still like my camping entertainment, so what do I bring for the downtime? Like torrential rain/floods/social unrest/breakdowns, etc.? I used to do motorcycle camping but what I took holds good for car camping, too. Handheld off grid devices are still recommended. My old Nintendo DS XL handheld computer game with game cards for chess; solitaire; scrabble; 100 classic books, learn a foreign language, etc., has enough entertainment for weeks, if not years. Doubles as a nightlight, time clock, etc. I have an emergency battery operated power unit for it as well. My old 1980s Franklin WordMaster portable computer dictionary comes with a range of games, like Anagrams, Hangman, etc. I have a portable Casio calculator that plays Number Invaders. An emergency solar radio with torch and clock. For low tech stuff, I carry a portable chess / checkers set, with some printed games and puzzles. A paperback or two to read. Writing material and a small note pad. This may sound like a lot, but fits into a shoulder bag, with space to spare. I never got bored at nights or during the inevitable downtime that can occur at any moment.

OK now… I’m not certain if the presenter is a paid stealth spokes person or not. My theory is that he is being compensated. You cannot take a cheap tent and compare that against a more expensive tent and expect to get some type of competitive review. It would be better if you were to take tents that are in the same price range and compare those.

I can agree on not dressing appropriately. I went camping this week and wore cotton and denim shorts. It was hot and humid and rained all in 1 day and it did not dry quick enough! Then i changed into more cotton and it rained again! I was cold and not comfortable. Next time i go I'm wearing moisture wicking clothes or something. Also my towel was cotton and didnt dry at all! Bringing different towels next time..

Ear plugs: I once unknowingly set up near a den of young coyotes. Starting around midnight they went nuts barking and howling every time their parent would bring them food, twice an hour until about 5AM. Another time, a couple truck loads of Boy Scouts showed up after sunset. They were as noisy as the coyotes.

So a tent that has more poles is a con because it takes slightly longer to set up? Umm, more poles means more structural integrity in poor weather and winds, that sounds like a positive to me, not a con. You really should be less concerned about saving 5 minutes in tent set up time and more concerned with tent strength and storm resistance. Also, your rating system is completely useless, 45 worst tent, 65 best tent? ridiculous, what scores a 100? NOTHING?!

Everyone has an opinion, i've set this up myself no issues, faster with someone helping. it's been through rain storms with no issues, it hold a full size queen air mattress and 2 twins with space. for the price and size i WOULD recommend it, it has a electric cord pass through, put a dang fan in the tent..... anyone who is bringing this tent anywhere is probably only going to campgrounds with electric hook ups anyway.

It seems like the main issue with this particular type of tent as far as leaking is the way the rainfly is set up over the door. The bottom is so far out compared to the small hood area that water drips from the hood into the tent when you open it. I suspect the version of this tent with the full covered vestibule is probably better suited for rainy days.

  • @giobikefans

I have had this tent for some time and I do agree it is a little irritating to setup. But my biggest beef is the quality of the poles. I have had two split under tension and had to repair them. But it was really cheap… so cheap that I got it for a single event where it ended up snowing and raining the entire trip and it was dry the entire time. I kept using it when I didn’t feel hauling our RV on backwoods trips. You can certainly do better but its definitely not garbage. I think they manufactured at the best quality they could at that price point.

Never count on drinking water, always bring enough for your trip as well as something for if that runs out and there’s no other choice, the first thing you’d need in survival situations and all campers ik are interested in survival, the more the merrier and never to much unless you have to carry it on your back

Never leave your tent open,in the day or night. You will get bugs inside the tent, even raccoons will come in and steel your chips while you are fishing! Never use lights inside the tent with the door open, you will have tons of mosquitoes in your tent. I personally never go into my tent until it’s time to go to sleep,I usually fish or cut up firewood to keep the fire going. Put your tent on a dry flat spot in the grass. Never put your tent on a hill, because if it rains you will get flooded out! Don’t put your tent on gravel either, because it can rip the bottom of your tent with all the weight from you and the air mattress. Don’t put your tent under a huge tree as well,if a storm comes through with high winds it will cause branches to fall and it could kill you if one falls on your tent. These are just some tips for keeping safe and dry while you are tent camping.
