I'm Joe Angell, an amateur mechanic, hobbyist electronics designer, and actual software developer, and these are the various projects I've been working on. There will be DeLorean customizations (and repairs, so many repairs), electronics experiments, 3D printing, custom code, and much more. Thanks for watching!
How I learned to just buy a stronger impact gun
Time to replace the last part of my DeLorean's suspension, swapping out the old rear upper link arms with adjustable ones. This is the key to getting the rear actually aligned, probably for the first time ever.

Ultra-rare 24K gold-plated DeLorean
zhlédnutí 1,8KPřed 8 měsíci
Something a bit different this time: a look at Bill and Patrick Shea's original 24L gold-plated DeLorean. This is one of only three cars DeLorean gold-plated as part of a promotion with American Expression, and the only one in private hands (the other two are in museums). From Boston to Chicago and back in under a week -- how did my DeLorean hold up?
zhlédnutí 3,9KPřed 9 měsíci
Just three days after upgrading my suspension, replacing my exhaust and rebuilding a brake caliper, it was time for the 1200-mile trip to the DeLorean Convention and Show. Just before I left I had another last-minute repair, but the real question is, how did the car do on such a long drive? My DeLorean's brake caliper seized, so I “fixed” it
zhlédnutí 4,4KPřed 10 měsíci
I finally took my new suspension and exhaust system for a test drive. Then the burning smell started, and the brake pedal got soft. When I got home I found a trail of brake fluid and smoke pouring off the rear right wheel. Now to fix it. Many thanks to Martin Gutkowski for his guidance in fixing this. Upgrading the DeLorean's rear suspension only to find THIS
zhlédnutí 112KPřed 10 měsíci
After replacing my front suspension, it was time to put KW coil-overs in the rear. It didn't take long to realize that I needed to replace the trailing arms, too. I went with nice stainless steel ones that will make my car much safer to drive, especially considering how little was left of the old driver's side arm! A Bunch of DeLorean Exhaust Leaks to Fix
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed rokem
My DeLorean let me know something was wrong with the exhaust by making a lot of loud ticks. It wasn't bad when cruising, but opening up the throttle would make the engine way louder than it normally is. I had a loose flange, a weak flange, and a broken header flange. Lots of flanges. But nothing some welding couldn't solve. More information about this repair can be found at www.tmproductions.co...
3D printing an engine-mounted TPS case for the DeLorean

The throttle position sensor mounted to my DeLorean's 3.0L throttle body kept seizing on me, but I could find no problem with the TPS or the throttle. The Importance of Proper Coolant Hose Routing in a DeLorean
I hope that you are OK. No videos in 5 months is not great. Sorry but no real point in subscribing anymore.
Understood. I’m doing good, but work’s been busy and I haven’t had time to record anything lately. I have plenty of ideas - I just need to get the videos made!
NERD REPRESENT! Happy to be an accidental extra in your video Joe! What a beautiful car that is, so unique, so ridiculous, gorgeous.
More videos please!
I would not donate to the Fox foundation under any circumstances.
excellent work
Guy! You are hilarious! The real DIY mechanic!
cool video what's the name of the interior color of gold delorean beige panni tan saddle
I've heard "saddle", but I'm not entirely sure myself. www.deloreanmuseum.org/gold-deloreans.html calls it "tan".
What type of tig welding rods are you using?
you need a vice. but i great video, i always love the Delorean work
Rear Toe out does that in extreme circumstances like acceleration or low traction.
Stopped 3 minutes in, youve irritated me.
Stop... Hammer Time🔨 Another awesome video!
I have to admit l'm a little bit jelly that you have a 2 post lift. Well your definitely getting her ready for a better DCS trip. Hope to be seeing you there again.
I remember when I was doing a job on my car's rear axle driveshaft flange, I had to hammer the crap out of the pinion gear "bolt" head. I ended up making the same mistake you did and mushroomed the crap out of the head and messing the threads up. A pinion gear for a Ford 8.8 3.55 axle is not cheap, so I ended up just grinding down enough threads to get the nut back on. Luckily for me you can't see it and it's been driving problem free for over 10k miles.
When I did the lower link arm bolt I used a sledge and mushroomed the bolt. I had a replacement, so I didn’t care too much, other than having to actually get it through the carrier and link arm. I wound up grinding it to a bit of a taper to remove the mushroomed This actually helped with reassembly, as the link arm and carrier were slightly out of alignment, and I couldn’t get the new bolt in. So I tapped the tapered bolt in from the other side to line everything up, since the taper got around the misalignment issue, and then tapped the good bolt in from the correct side, knocking the tapered bolt out of the way fast enough that it entered the link arm before everything could get misaligned again. So it worked out in the end in that case. For the upper link arm, though, I was committed - I couldn’t put back on the nut, so I just had to hope I could get the rest apart!
Inductive bolt beater will heat the steel but not the aluminum.💡 Glad to see you have options in the Ryobi battery ecosystem. The extended 3/8 ratchet is handy, though the ONE battery platform can get in the way. Thanks for sharing your Delorean maintenance saga. Comment for the algorithm.... 😉
I really want one of those inductive bolt heaters. I feel like I can’t justify the cost of one, but given how much time I’ve spent trying to get suspension bolts out recently, it’s probably worth it!
They aren't ideal for all situations, but they deliver WAY more calories (joules?) than a (not) MAPP torch. You can kit one from Chinese sub assemblies for WAY less $ than buying a finished one. Your channel name suggests you like "projects"
@jimurrata6785 Your right, I do like projects. :) I’ll check out the kits - thanks!
Maybe an air hammer on the center of the bolt head & other end if you had one.......
your ratchet might have a lifetime warranty! the ones I got from harbor freight and autozone do and I've replaced them a few times each. they usually don't ask questions but if they do just don't tell them what you did. also put antiseize (or even bearing grease) on those bolts and you won't have these problems next time.
I love all of your videos. Keep them coming!
nickel anti sieze paste on all of the bolt shanks will help massively in the future
Or the Past! LoL!
I noticed that the old bolt on the driver's side looked bent when you spun the impact on it. Might have been the cause of the seizing on both.
A wise man once told me a 20 minute job takes 20 minutes if your organised and have the right tools.
I learned from my farther that the right tools makes half the job itself so you are right.
This is the first time I have seen upper and lower adjustable arms used on a D. Well done!
Love how you show all the fails happening on the way to success!
High quality vid, sir! Keep them coming!
I wonder if it's possible to go the MyMechanics way of just completely renovating every piece of a car. Though I do think that as a bug CZcamsr (and a craftsman from Switzerland) I'm guessing his budget for everything is a bit of "yes" Anyways, loved the video, that trailing arm was just friggin scary, will watch more.
Great video, glad I am not the only one who has impossible bolts to remove. Also glad to know I am not the only one who does simple tasks 3 times cause I keep forgetting to put on ALL the freakin parts. I feel like we must be related.
Just incredible! I never knew there was a third.
there are actually 3 more, one was done in 1985... the other two were in the 90's. Home/self plated of course. The 1983 car is the only one with gold interior, it was a prototype (just dyed regular interior), so it makes it truly unique. DMC Huston has a couple other random interior pieces in blue and red, because they were going to actually put different colors in later cars (84, 85 ect)... but the brown interior was the only one with a full set completed.
I thought the three factory cars - the two actually sold and the one built from the spares - all had brown interiors, but I’ve never seen the other two in person. Some quick googling found a picture of a gold car with a black interior exactly like you said. I definitely would have put that in the video if I’d known! I was kind of hyper-focused on this specific car. I did hear about someone gold plating their own car in the ‘80s, but I didn’t know about the two in the ‘90s.
There was another owner who took their car and polished the stainless to an actual mirror... he was told he cant drive it because it blinds the other drivers, its literally a mirror. The story was told in the old DMCFourms DMCTALK... and that story was from the mid 90's.. but i have no other information or pictures. It was fastinating because it was telling stories because there was such a glut of DeLoreans trying to be sold between 83-85 that dealers were painting cars just to make them different enough from the others to sell. Remember, they were 25k (in 1981,82 @@joeangellx
I have basically that same Peace on my eg hatch civic and it rattles like that but I kinda like it bc it makes my sub sound cool
So that clip is fairly common in cars. Don't look like that but does that. Fender clip
Algorithm appeased! You are the man, Joe. Nice job.
My man just reinvented a j nut lmao.
U can buy these at ace and there metal 😂
You’d think so, but it’s an unusual size, since the original bracket had something else (probably a threaded insert of some kind). It took less than half an hour to model, print and install this - less time than driving to the auto parts or hardware store and finding out that they didn’t actually have quite what I needed.
@@joeangellx hell yea, i was thinking it took longer but in that case send it.
J clip
Good thing about my car is someone made a Facebook group for it so if I got a question, I just ask them and get at least 10 responses 😭
This is the future of diy home mechanics and im so excited for it, imagine how much even more accessible and affordable high quality 3D printers will be in 5-10 years, soon car manufacturers will be including stl files of almost every part on the car when you buy it, well thats only if they believe in right to repair which is highly unlikely…
J nut
we call those j clips
I believe that ’J nut’ is the American name for these spring steel devices. In Britain, where the car was built, they are usually called ‘speed nuts’.
It does seem like there are a lot of names for this thing. My 3D printed whatever-it's-called is sort of the hack fix, because the original didn't have any kind of clip like this, but rather some kind of threaded insert in the bracket itself. I think. I couldn't be bothered to remove the louvers or the bracket itself to get a better look.
@@joeangellxI am impressed by your remedy to this problem, you really ought to give it its own name. Perhaps, instead of J clip yours should be called a Joeclip.
Those J clips are missing on my car too. If you have the file, could you share it with me so I can print some for my car?
@MasonFowlkesKenneth Seems I forgot to update the description with the link to my site, which has the STL and Fusion369 files: www.tmproductions.com/repairs-and-maintenance-blog/2023/10/31/t-panel-rattle
Joe in my humble opinion you installed the gas charged lift pistons on the doors upside down. While the doors are wide open I prefer to have the oil and nitrogen gas cylinder above the silver rod rather than below it. And you're right the door struts / lift pistons don't last long if in constant use like maybe five years. Then you get droopy doors when it's cold outside. Owner of VIN 02261 since February 2001.
I don’t think it matters which way they go, but they probably are. I once heard a theory that installing them upside down prolongs the life, but it probably isn’t significant isn’t if at all. I feel that my doors always droop in the cold. I can either have them rise properly In the cold and over-extend In the summers, or open properly In the summer and drop In the cold. I think that’s just how it’ll be with a passive system like this.
They’re called J-nuts and they’re made from spring steel with formed threads.
Yeah, everyone seems to be saying that. The DeLorean does use some smaller ones (although I didn’t know what they were called before), but I do know that’s not what was originally in this spot. I think it was a threaded insert or something pressed into the bracket, but it wasn’t worth the trouble to take off the louvers to get a better look, or risk taking out the large bolts that hold the bracket to the roof box and possibly breaking something important there. It took me about half an hour to design and print this, which is less than it would have taken me to find out the auto parts store didn’t have one that was big enough. :)
Very trick! Nice job👍
Those are called j clips
Promo sm 😎
For future reference that part is called a j nut
J nut😊
J nut or speed clip, but when you have a 3d printer...
Yeah, that’s basically what I made, although it’s larger than the stamped metal ones used in some other parts of the car, so I’m not sure how readily available they are. I also don’t think that’s what was originally in the car, since the other mounts seem to have some other kind of integrated threading and not just a clip. It took me less than 30 minutes to model, print and install the heat set insert. It would have taken me more time to hit a couple of auto parts stores and find out that they don’t have one in the right size before giving up and just printing one anyway. :)
The j clip has left the chat
