AT Backpacking in Connecticut - Silver Hill Campsite to Kent
After my second late night arrival of the trip, I awoke to a chilly morning with a large group of scouts at Silver Hill Campsite. No solitude and no complaints this was a great group to share camp with.

Live in Fairfield and just a little above the LVRT. Ride the trails all the time. Those hills to Carmi are no joke. Nice ride down the next day thou. Take care, Al
Great to see the conclusion of your trip. It must have been fun to be at the campsite with a group. I never would have thought to being earplugs when backpacking, but that a great tip to help you sleep if someone is snoring or loud.
Yes I used to be a scout back in the day. I’ll be honest when I first heard them from the trail, I was horrified. I thought it was a group of partying teenagers. They were really very nice.
It's always better when the Boy Scouts offer you food willingly, rather than having to sneak in later and steal it.
Yes I agree they were very nice and I didn’t have to resort to any nefarious activity.
It was great running into you on trail! Looked like a fun adventure despite the hiccups.
It was a good trip. How did overnight go?
Well done John!
Thanks Rich this was a fun trip. Definitely need to get back there and hit the section from Pine Swamp Hill to Sharon Mountain Campsite.
Great job John...I was wondering how long it would take for CT and Mass...looks like beautiful terrain...thank you for showing us the rrail...way to go Bud !
The AT in Connecticut is about 50 mile and Massachusetts is about 90 miles. At 10 miles a day it would take about two weeks to backpack both states. It think that is a conservative estimate since you would also need to go into town for resupplies and an occasional shower.
@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA wish I didn't have to work so much...would like to do the New England Section at least while the body still can...lol...it's a little beat up right now so haven't been hiking since the fall...been spending more time in the canoe.
That was beautiful, John! Cooler weather always makes for great camping/hiking. I agree with you about ear plugs. There always seems to be one snorer in groups, lol!
You got that right! They saved me big time last weekend in Imp Shelter in the White Mountains.
We love stopping by historic places like this and when you get to hear such great facts and information what a bonus this was nice! You cracked me up with Ian and Grant! LOL! Thx for sharing this was interesting.
@justramblinaround, you have to go far off the beaten path to find this gem. I really enjoy history. I didn't really put much editing into this one and didn't publish it to my subscriber feed thinking it would not get to many views and hurt the algorithm. I curious how did you find it?
Juat went directly to your accouny! 😊@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA
I live in Easthampton . In fact watching your video on my t.v. screen ... I can look to the right and see MT.Tom out my window . Some people say Dr. Seuss (a Springfield native) drew inspiration from Mt. Tom and Easthampton for The Grinch . Specifically the way he sat up on that mountain looking down over the little town of Who-ville .
Interesting though regarding Dr. Seuss. I read all those book many time when I was young. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing video and you captured such great shots, much enjoyed. Liked 👍😄and subd
Thanks and welcome
Such a great video! liked 👍😄
Appreciate the support, thanks
Is it possible to do this ride on a MTB.. instead of gravel bike
Yes you would be fine with a mountain bike.
While hiking in New England quite a few years ago I hiked up to a mountain top with a large communications towers setup. Well on the way back I was approached by some armed security guards who wanted to know what I was doing up near the communication compound, apparently some of those antennas were government security antennas. They knew I was there as soon as I was about 100 yards from it. They must have had sensors somewhere along the trail going up. They walked me back to the main trail and watched me wonder off. Makes you wonder who’s watching who.
Interesting, I have had a similar response when near a paper mill in Maine once. The towers at Mt. Tom are commercial and I’ve never had an issue.
Really beautiful hike the weather does look beautiful even with a low in the 30s it looked fantastic. The process of watching you filtering water is great to share and sharing stories of what did and didn't go well so others can learn. Wow a night in the 20s your brave. Great shout out to the vets and your daughter we appreciate all she does! Nice hike hope you got some sleep.
@justramblinaround there is no bad weather, just unprepared people. Filtering water beats bringing all the water you need for the three das. It's about 2 lb per litter. My office celebrates Veterans Day so I usually make a long weekend out of it and go backpacking. Take care.
Love these videos. Funny thing, I live by Mystic, CT and I have your cups...Go Mystic Cycle Center!!
@amylipkin2116 - Another nutmegger!, Glad to have you on board. Thanks for watching!
So true that the trails change so much on the return hike!
It sure does. I have always found something I missed in the way back.
Good to see that you were able to enjoy some great weather on these days!! Always makes an adventure just a little more special.
Yes Bruce and Otis good weather can elevate the soul.
Some cool big rocks in this one. Glad things went smoother on this day.
@RhodySeth that was a cool donation for sure. I’m glad I got to do it. Thanks for watching!
Day 2 looks like it went much better. Liked how you covered the gear you were using to keep warm. That lemon squeezer section of rocks was cool looking.
The Lemon Squeezer was a surprise to me. It was a nice feature to explore. I did a video last year on cold weather sleeping. It can be intimidating if you don’t know what gear you need to stay warm at night.
Interesting to see AT from that end. I've done all of Georgia and North Carolina and hopefully get to hike in Connecticut in some day too, views are amazing all away. AT is great wherever you are.
One day I plan to hike the whole trail from Georgia to Maine. For now I just keep doing section hikes. I have hiked parts of it in Shenandoah National Park, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
Hello saw you on Seth’s New England and subscribed. Thank you, very nice.
@mickybellroberts you have good taste, Seth rocks. Thanks for stopping by the channel.
Hi John! Yep, that's my mom Jane Williams, the docent at the Chester Arthur birthplace and in my opinion Chet Arthur's biggest supporter (she would vote for him if he ran today haha). I really really appreciate this. This is such a beautiful document; thank you for posting it. I will share with her and good tidings on your rides this summer :)
@UFOParfums she was awesome and she really engaged the group in President Arthur's story. I'm a big fan of both Chester and your mom!
Bringing back the fall magic! Beautiful trails, seem like you had them all to yourself. Hiking blunders are always frustrating, especially when they cost you time and energy.
@rhodySeth I did have them to myself on Day 1, but that was a weekday. I had plenty of company on Day 2, which you'll see in the next video. I still have a heathy backlog of recording to work through. Patience is always good to have when you are making mistakes while hiking.
Go Coast Guard..........and forever GO BEARS!
Thanks Kenny you got that right!
The AT is such an iconic trail to hike. Every year I hike some section of it, but it looks like I'm going to miss this year's hike. I've bike tours booked for each month but I'm going to get back to AT eventually. Thanks for sharing your hike. Happy trails!
It's always a challenge to get in both backpacking and cycling. I love them both. I'll be hiking some f the AT in New Hampshire in June.
Hi John. Very much enjoyed this video, look forward to part 2! As for mistakes, the cdocumentation/signs indicated water was available. And, I suspect the bypasses might have been recent and temporary. So, I give you an "A" for: 1. Making it as far as you did 2. Able to adapt to challenges 3. Maintaining positive attitude 4. Excellent filming and production (as always) Question: Did I understand this was the last section of the AT in CT you hadn't done?
Ken, I'll follow up in a week with all the mistakes I made. The most obvious was not realizing there was no water at Silver HIll Campsite. There were two signs warning me and I just blew it. The bypass was just in case the water was flowing too much on the Guinea Brook. I could have researched that and it would not have been a surprise. In the warmer months I would have just walked through it. I have a few miles left from Pine Swamp Hill to Sharon Mountain Campsite to complete before I can put Connecticut in the done column. I'll try to get it this year, maybe another overnight. Take Care
I can't imagine how challenging it must be to try and hike at nighttime. Especially with those signs suggesting the re-routes. You seem to have a really good attitude about just rolling with it when things don't go perfect. Looking forward to seeing part 2.
I usually do more homework than I did for this trip. I agree though it was tough not meeting my objective, I’ll get back there again.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA I've got a video coming up on Tuesday that was pretty much a total waste of time. Former logging property they turned into a hiking preserve but like the trails were just impassable due to flooding, so frustrating.
Logging can make a mess of things. Wwe have a lot of logging due to the Emerald Ash Bore Beatle killing the trees and then state cuts them down so they don't fall on anyone.
How many mistakes did you find? Let me know which ones you found.
Nice video, we did that section already, like the viaducts and history of the railroad and the technology then to build the iron bridges. Amazing how much rock was blasted by hand to make the path.
Yes the Air Line was to be a shortcut and that went through the hills instead of along the shoreline. Lots of work to blast the hills and fill the valleys. Thanks for watching.
Wow this trail is amazing we would want to hike, run and bike this section its fantastic. That brewery looked like a perfect pit stop. The depot was great even the cute butterfly benches. Wow your lucky to have this.
When I saw the brewery I was thinking of you and Ron!
I ride in southern Vermont, Rutland County. Mile upon mile of gravel and class 4 roads. Can't be beat.
@jonathanbenn2241 I have heard there is a lot of gravel in that area. I have also ridden in the Green Mountain National Forest near Wilmington.
Excellent vlog! This is on my list of rides! Well done!
You’ll definitely enjoy it!
Thanks for sharing! I was in Southern New England at the time. We were at about 90% totality. It seemed like there was cloud cover, nothing more.
I did that in 2017 and it was cool. I highly recommend totality.
Very cool! 😎
Thanks for the visit
Really enjoyed seeing both of your reactions and hearing what you both thought. We were right in the path of totality in 2017 and looks like our experience was exactly the same as everyone's this year I just never realized how lucky we were and how many people didnt get to enjoy it. I love hearing everyone cheer when it happens. You actually had a great filter for your phone I have seen several videos this was really good well done John. It was most surprising how cold it did get we knew how it would get dark but the drop in degrees was so interesting. You two are so sweet it was nice seeing you both and that looked like a great place to stay and a nice little hike to start the day!
Jodi, it was just as you said. We didn't know what is would feel like, and it was such a cool to experience. I have watched it several times myself just to see our reactions.I hope we live long enough to see the next one. We'll be in our 80s by then. As always, I enjoy reading your comments and watching your videos.
There are some nice bike paths here in New England. Could string a lot together and explore a bunch of states I reckon.
Seth, long before started hike, I used Dona lot of biking on rail trails. The number of trails available now is so much more the the 90s. We are fortunate, not everyone can hike 4Ks
Hi! Really nice video! I'm probably about to go to Guam this summer. May I ask whether there's any chance of organized tours and if not, whether it's okayish to drive in Guam. Thanks!
Yes of course! You can drive in Guam. I don’t know of any organized tours, but you will certainly find plenty of history to explore here.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA Thanks!
Another nicely-filmed and produced video! Look like a great trail, especially with the upcoming extension. As info, there's a nice rail-trail just south of where we live. It's called the Longleaf Trace, and goes 41 miles from Hattiesburg, MS northwest. I hiked (and filmed it) it in sections, in 2021. Production for these videos is in progress. Thanks for your great videos and channel!
Thanks for the info! I look that one up and check it out. I look forward to seeing your video
These trails just making riding a bike so much more enjoyable. Lots of things have changes over the years as I certainly don't recall many of such path growing up, but seem to be everywhere now. Awesome!!!
Bruce it’s not just the trails, but the e-bikes are all the rage too. Do they have any near you?
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA Indeed, we do have a few and they are used regularly by many. I know that at one time or another an e-bike will be in my future.
Thank you, John! I really enjoyed the POV aspect of this video. Those trails look well enjoyed. Your videos are always a highlight of my week 👍

I don’t recall seeing any signs prohibiting overnight parking. It would be best to check with RIDOT, just in case.
I wish I would have known about this place before I left Johnstown yesterday. I visited the Flight 93 National Memorial and the flood museum, but I completely missed all of these sites.
