    Made a discovery while elk hunting in the mountains. If you take a large cotton or canvas game bag it makes a good mattress when packed full of pine needles and leaves. They are cheap. Even cheaper if you wait till after hunting season.

    Good points and gear. Lanterns are available at a lot of places as well as garage sales. You can set up a canvas tarp. harbor freight has an 8x10 for under 50. I mean a tarp not drop cloth. If you have a yard start by setting up there or a close park where you are not far from your car. If you are doing this with a lady you want to keep going with then add some extras to make her comfortable. If you want to wait til next year to allow time to get gear, try one of those town wide or long drive garage sales where they go for several miles. Make offers. Still try close to where you can bail out if you are not doing well. Probably the most needed thing to this activity is to learn to sew. It wasn't easy for any of us and we didn't have videos to learn from. Like Sarge says it don't have to be beutiful just function for you. Used old sewing machines are not expensive.

  • @sargevining
    @sargevining Před dnem

    I'll disagree on the tent selection. The prices of the available WW1 & WW2 reproduction pup tents is comparable to those being asked for Viet Nam vintage pups. Under the "Buy Once, Cry Once" philosophy, the more authentic tent is more economical because at some point, you're going to want to replace that 1970s-80s tent for one that all your buds are using. Air mattresses can be covered with blankets. A wool blanket is a wool blanket, a Nalgene bottle can be put in a pack. But a tent---that's the center of your camp. I'll also mention some exciting things are coming on the sleep-system/shelter system fronts for Classic Camping. Stand by, its stuff that everybody interested will need to know about.

    Just a reminder. The WWI mess kit was made to be used with the aluminum canteen cup which would have served as a pot. I was a boy scout for like 10 years. I started off with the scout mess kit and found the food sticks and burns fast on the aluminum pan and the pot was too small. I never used the cup and brought a larger sized plastic glass like you would us at home because it held more fluid. After I acquired a USGI mess kit that has a stainless steel pan the sticking and burning were substantially reduced. I had also switched to USGI pistol belt, canteen, canteen cup and carrier. After that I entirely lost track of what happen to the boy scout mess kit. The USGI stuff took care of my cooking needs. Note that I only brought the USGI mess kit pan. I left the aluminum lid/tray part at home.

    A hatchet or small axe is non-negotiable imo. I've spent many snowy winter nights in the woods with an SAK and a cheap estwing hatchet. By all means bring more than that but if you have to pick one tool when your life depends on a fire, take the hatchet or small axe. A bigger knife is a nice-to-have unless you're skinning animals.

    Nice job. I recall sleeping at my grandparents house as a little tyke during a dark, dry, artic cold, Minnesota winter in the early 1970's. My grandma had many blankets on my bed; one was heavy wool. After being tucked in, prayers said, and goodnight kiss, my Grandma shut off the lights and closed the bedroom door as she left. As I lay there, I soon found that, if I flipped the covers off as fast as possible, there was such a gigantic mass of static sparks that I could literally light the room.

    I was in the US Army from 1986-2016. I was issued a wool blanket, but I don’t think I ever used it. The exception is when I went to ROTC Advanced Camp in the summer of 1987, I was forced to make my bed in the barracks for inspection. I slept on top of the wool blanket so I didn’t mess my bed up. I just thought of the wool blanket as something to use on a bed. It never occurred to me to use it in the field. We were initially issued these heavy cotton sleeping bags that were difficult to compress. We also had the poncho liner which younger Soldiers call a woobie. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that I was issued the wonderful Modular Sleep System. Anyway, looking back, the wool blanket would have been a good thing to use when the temperatures were in the 50s at night instead of that bulky heavy sleeping bag. The poncho liner is good when it’s in the 60s.

      My late Father was a WW2 Army veteran and he so often told me about making the rack & sleeping on top of it, and just tightening it up before inspection. I did the same thing. I live in the deep south and only very recently acquired a wool blanket for camping in addition to my woobie. I threw in half a dozen binder clips to put the two together when one or the other isn't quite warm enough.

    Nice colection of Scout blankets. Don't forget you can find old wool blankets that were used in houses. They have brighter colors. I have a light green/blue, a yellow and maybe a pink. Guys back then would not have cared about the colors. Actually they liked light colors. Alpaca is nice if you can find one that honestly has a high alpaca wool content. When making that blanket setup for sleeping make sure you can skin out of it during the night and get back in. You will need at least one trip to the head if you are older.

Either way, if you don't have a Grayl it would be a fantastic investment fir your kit if you are traveling distances with water on the route and need to purify water instead of carrying extra. I am currently saving up for the titanium version because I got so much value from the regular and want the versatility of a cooking vessel. Take care my friend and happy trails.
