Aida is for a dramatic soprano.

I first heard her live in Salome. At the time it was rare for a soprano to have the dramatic thrust for somehting like Strauss or Wagner and also the physical beauty to look right in the part. Ewing stripped to her G string in the Dance of the Seven Veils. Later in a revised version of that production she went full nude. I became a fan for that point on. Her voice had the color one associates with lyric mezzos who go up to dramatic soprano. It sliced through the orchestra effortlessly but still had a warmth to the tone that made it wonderful.

I am always astounded by Verrett. Interestingly I saw her at the Ravinia Summer Music Festival on a couple of years earlier when she was singing Adalgisa to Sills Norma in concert performance. That performance, with those two singers, was more dramatic and moving emotionally than the several staged performances of Norma I have seen.

Foropera.....most impressed by Price, Milanov, Gencer and Varnay....but where was the great spinto, Maria Caniglia in this group? She did a landmark recording with Tullio Serafin in 1946, with Gigli, Stignani, and Pasero...you should check it out.
