    how hard is the kayaking and how long is the tour? How often are you actively using the paddle? Is it easy? I read that they said you can't have a neck injury and I do have a neck injury but I really want to go.

      Wow, great questions. Of course I'm not a specialists or anything but I'd imagine it would depend on who you bring with you in the kayak. I've taken this adventure several times. Both times I was the stronger and more experienced paddler. Try spending two hours in a kayak at home. See how it goes. Then, bring some friends to Puerto Rico for the adventure. Make sure you have the strongest and most experienced person in the rear of your canoe. You'll have a blast. Depending on your weight, you might not have to do much work at all. Just practice for several hours at home in a two person kayak. Make sure it's the "ocean" tour kayak because the back support is different in the canoe-style or one person kayaks. See what muscles groups you use to make sure it's something for you. Most people would be at least a little sore the next day. Might be a good day to visit a beach or drive to Ponce. If you ever do it, send me a private message and let me know how it went. Cheers!

      I would do a Google search for "bio bay Puerto Rico Fajardo". Here's one website I found. m.viator.com/San-Juan-attractions/Bioluminescent-Bay/d903-a18344 There are several tours on the nearby island of Vieques but I prefer the kayak excursion from Fajardo. I've been once with my wife and a second time with all four of my kids. It was fantastic both times. Also, I've heard the the bio bay has recovered since the hurricane.

  • @eichelbergergary
    @eichelbergergary Před 5 lety

    I first took this tour over 20 years ago before heavy tourism hit Vieques. I can tell you, it is named mosquito bay for a reason. In those days, the tour also included a swim, which was doubly cool compared to paddling, and the water is only about 3 foot deep in many parts. the bug spray issue is not proven to my knowledge, but with the volume of people now visiting, it is plausible. Also, back then, there was a fraction of the light pollution there is now, and it really does make a difference. still, I would recommend it to anyone to do this amazing trek.

    • @blwesley
      @blwesley Před 6 lety

      I don't think so. Most GoPro cameras come with an f2.8 lens. I had an f1.4 (that let in several times more light) on a full-rame camera. However, it's been a few years. The software in the smaller cameras have come a long way and it's possible that you'll be able to capture some and then amp it up using some software.

    Hi, I just wanted to ask how you got the video you did get? what setting or camera did you use?

    • @wesleyadventures4853
      @wesleyadventures4853 Před 7 lety

      I used a full-framed Canon 5D Mark ii with a 24mm Cine lens that allowed me to go down to a T-stop of 1.4 (similar to an F-stop but more reliable for video. I also had to do a fair amount of work in Adobe Premiere Pro to push the light as much as I could without ruining the video. The camera gear wasn't waterproof so I had to bring a water tight diving bag for the camera (double bagged). I don't remember what setting I used. While I typically wouldn't use AUTO, I often use AUTO when I don't have time to set up a shot. Sometimes it works and other times it's a horrible idea. Hope that helped.

    • @dirkgunify
      @dirkgunify Před 7 lety

      Thank you for the detailed description. That does help. We are going back and I wanted to see if there was a simpler way to catch video. I have a Canon T3i I think the closest lens to your 24mm I have is a canon 50mm 1.8 f stop. I was hoping my new phone with enhanced night pictures (Galaxy S8+ ) could do it. Probably not though.

    • @wesleyadventures4853
      @wesleyadventures4853 Před 7 lety

      I love my S8 but it doesn't stand a chance. Another thing to remember is a 1.8 lets in almost half of the light a 1.4 lets in. Also, the Canon T3i has an APS-C sensor which lets far less light in as well, plus it has a crop factor of ~1.6x (I just say 1.5 to make the math easier) which basically turns your 24mm into a 40mm b/c of the distance from the camera's APS-C sensor. That's one reason I went the extra mile to bring a full-frame. My wife and I went here the first time. We just went again recently with our four kids. During my second visit, I didn't even try to bring equipment. I just sat back and enjoyed the view. Regardless of what you choose to do. I hope you have a fantastic time and I hope you continue to play with your camera and learn how it's used. Don't think I know what I'm talking about... it will be years before I more fully understand DSLR equipment. The best thing to do is just practice and have fun!

    Better to bring a powerbar (or a travel surge protector) with surge and overload protection than the extension cord. On-ship power isn't perfect and when using a lot of devices in one plug, that can damaging to devices. If there is a wiring fault or short in the wall outlet, an extension cord will not stop it but most decent surge protectors will (and not the $5.00 Walmart ones, spend a bit more as you'll likely have expensive electronic plugged into it). We have a travel surge that has three grounded outlets and two USB hookups for charging. The back plug folds in, making it easy to pack. You may also want to bring a 1-foot three prong extension cord (MonoPrice sells these) as some rooms on the older Carnival ships have the room desk plugs upside down, causing issues plugging in some surge protectors.

      +gsr187t If you want to catch the ferry from the main island (Fajardo) over to Culebra, MAKE SURE you get there two hours early. We were there in May on a non -holiday weekend. We arrived one hour early and didn't catch the cheap (<$4) ferry. Instead, we had to take a plane from Ceiba which was much more expensive. However, it was nice b/c we arrived on the island before the first ferry and it felt like we had the island to ourselves. If you do take a plane, be patient waiting for a taxi at the Culebra airport. Yes, it's a main road but because the ferry hasn't arrived, the taxis aren't out in force. Remember, Puerto Rico residents with a PR driver's license get first priority on the ferry. If you aren't there early enough then you could loose your place. In the afternoon we arrived at the ferry dock about an hour early. There wasn't anyone there so we found a nearby food place and had lunch. We eventually got into line about 30 minutes before departure (it did fill up). There are places on the island to rent snorkeling gear.... it's a MUST DO. Also, make sure you check out the Bio Bay (czcams.com/video/bA0IywSHbZY/video.html) and the rain forest (czcams.com/video/9OrvghmU_0A/video.html). Enjoy!
