  • Winter of 1856 500 Mormon pioneers had to take emergency shelter here to protect themselves from the unusually cold blizzard. It was so cold even some of their cattle died, frozen in place. Along the trail over 1/5th of the 500 died. Exhausted and frozen, you can image their relief when a rescue party from Salt Lake City was sent to provide aid. It was seen as a miracle and many stories and songs have been written about this sacred place.
Today, tourists can come to the visitor’s center to learn about the pioneer’s. They have a small museum, clean restrooms, and smiling faces. A quick hike to Devil’s Gate is a must. They have several handcarts available for your family to pull. It makes it easier to imagine just how hard it was for those early American pioneers.
