How I Survived The First Three Months With My New Puppy
I feel like every type you described…thank you for your videos, thank you for helping me feel less alone
My pup was a NIGHTMARE on Wheels! Much like many other pups I imagine. At 6 months I heavily considered giving her up, so much so that I listed her online for free (no rehoming fee, just actually free) and signed her up for the next available no-kill shelter slot that was available. Well...I swear it was like she knew that this was it. She began to calm down! I received immediate interest for her within a day of listing her, but I held off. Then about a month later the shelter called and said they had a spot. 2 years later she is still with me. She's not easy, but nothing like she was, and I love her. I will never give her up!
I love your content. I’m going to adopt a dog. Not a puppy for sure.
This was more about what we are doing wrong and less about what to do...
I have a blue merle border collie but am under the impression I have the hyper of hypest dogs to have ever lived...and then she also broke a paw... it has been quite the rollercoaster but we are getting there. Your videos really give peace of mind. Thanks.
It's nice to hear this from an experienced dog owner. The progress isn't linear, some days its two step forward, one step back. Other days its one step forward, two steps back honestly. When i was doin research prior to getting my puppy, only ONE video i saw mentioned the stress/puppy blues. Not enough people talk about this.🖤
My 7 month old large golden doodle turns vicious, I’m so tied of being bitten, bleeding.
This is my therapy now, watching experienced dog owners tell me that this is just a phase and that I will have the Riku that I've always dreamed of. He may be a little monster right now, but once he grows up, we're gonna be inseparable. 🤍
My 10 month keeps digging holes I think he’s done !
And the money spend is 🤯
Loved this! Exactly how I'm feeling right now .. I'm on day 13 but I think I see the light at the end of the puppy tunnel .....I hope!! 😬
The Achilles heel took me so long to comprehend, that it got funny again.
Oh my four of those hit home for me I’m on week three 🫣 I think it’s been a few weeks since I’ve slept 😂 my cats have almost packed their bags and moved out they are not impressed with the new addition! I have felt so so crappy about having a puppy but refuse to tell my husband how I’ve been feeling as he never wanted a dog I nagged for a year, however today 🤞🏻 I think we turned a corner I no longer want to move out with my cats 😂 I think the puppy and I have bonded 🙌🏻
I have experienced all 5 with my current rescue at different stages of having him. Your previous video about "What was I thinking" saved me more than once. It was nice to know i wasn't the only feeling that way. Training was going really well until I had to spend a month out of state caring for my mom & now Atley has regressed in some areas. Would love advice on getting him back on track. Also, age appropriate training for a puppy under a year that is tall enough to realize he can get things off the counter. I wish I was joking. Thanks for all the work you do!
Great and very warm video! Keep it doing!
Thanks!
Thank you, everything you said resonated so much with me. Thanks again!
Thanks for this down to earth advice!
the intro was so accurate lol thank you
“Why would you get such a difficult dog when you know you’re prone to depression? You’re not good enough for this dog.” HUGE OOF. The crazy thing is, I don't even think my puppy is an especially difficult puppy. He's not an EASY puppy -- my last two were easy -- but he seems to have a very standard suite of terrible puppy qualities. But...I have depression. And not just that, I have pretty severe sleeping issues even at the best of times, waking up dozens of times every night for no reason whatsoever. Add in puppy sleep-dep and I'm living an ugly recipe for things going nowhere good. He's only a little over nine weeks old. When I think about how long it could be before I get to rest again, the days ahead seem to do that telescoping cinematic effect, stretching and spiraling out infinitely. I'm struggling to see how I'm going to make it through the next week; the next month may as well be a fairy tale. It's hard not to despair. It's hard to imagine a day when he fits. I know one day I'll look back and feel so very glad that I stuck things out...but right now, especially pre-full-vaccination, the days feel impossibly long, the nights impossibly short, and the work impossibly difficult.
this really encapsulates how I’m feeling right now… I wanted my puppy so badly for over a year. I really thought it through and made sure I wanted to commit, but now I’m so overwhelmed.
thank you
Omg you read my mind with all the thoughts I just want to cry but I’m going to watch your other video on how you survived
Incredible...you deserve so much more views! I am learning much more from you than the million subscriber channels!
Great video...I have no puppy blues but did feel overwhelmed at times and powerless at some points... I think the main reason for me is that all videos on youtube only show ridiculously fast progressions in training the basics and everything else.... dog fights the leash once and then like a miracle becomes in step with the owner almost instantly... this is just not true and makes people doubt themselves. I guess many channels do not want to talk about it as it might hurt their commercial business income they have via youtube so need to show quick success stories. Their advice is great...but they give false expectations in their video footage...even as they still might say that it is a lot of hard work and patience.
I lost my best friend of 14 years a couple of months ago. Your videos have been the most helpful as I prepare to look for a new buddy. Thank you
My god, did I ever need to hear what you had to share. Thank you! I don’t feel so alone. (24 hour, no sleep)
I'm having this problem with a young dog, about 3-4 years old. I'm just getting tired of it all. It's great when we just chill and sit on the couch but other than that, I'm tired of everything else. Researching about food, training, the way I act, feelings, emotions ... etc ... it's all stressful when you are taking care of a dog by yourself. This dog actually gave me a different perspective of if I can even handle having kids. I hate quitting but man, I might have to give her away. My work and life is too stressful/busy to try to keep my dog entertained. Sorry, just a rant. Thanks for the video and all the comments. Glad I'm not alone.
I keep putting mine in kennels for few days break ,its god send without him 😢
I didn’t think I’d find a video like that, thank you. I feel so guilty and overwhelmed… thank you again ❤
I don’t care if your not religious but as I’m sitting in my bathroom crying about wtHeck did I do getting this dog, i asked God to help me and I found your video and it sounded like you were talking straight to me. I already feel like I ruined her and I’ve only had her three weeks 🤦🏼♀️😭 I’ve paid so much money to enroll her in training just for me to break down and get frustrated I’m thinking of rehoming her. Now I just want to tell her I’m sorry and let her be a puppy for a day while I get my shit together. Thank you! Thank you so much.
Actually don’t have a dog but I’m dealing with this with a new cat, and these videos are helpful. Thanks.
I do this kind thing with my 15 y.o. Border Collie. She's a 3X agility champion and 2X obedience champion, so for her it's old hat, but easy on her body. I set up 5 cones in a rough circle in the park (luckily no one has taken them away!) and we run from one to the other in random patterns. We also do all her old obedience exercises that don't involve jumping. It's great fun and she loves to work! She's a BC, after all. Wish I could post a video.
My husky is also afraid of shadows at night...
Also would like to have a video on puppy biting! I no longer have a puppy (the land-shark I had has moved past that and is 7 now), but. . .honestly, I made all but one of these mistakes with her as a puppy and her first year and a half was an absolute nightmare. It was SO hard I did not enjoy it at all. I think the only reason we got through it is because I was too stubborn to give up. She was a horrific biter and NOTHING worked. Unfortunately, she kind of still is. It's shrunk down to being reactive about certain things, but she can and absolutely WILL still bite. I can't help but wonder if I'd handled her differently as a puppy if we couldn't have avoided this. But - little hard to say now. It is possible the reactivity was already there in just a wilder form. I also made the mistakes with exercise. -sigh- I've learned better since, but yeah. Don't get me wrong, she's a good dog now - still difficult - but over all, good. But I am continuing to try to learn how to do things better. Both for her, for any future dog I get - and who knows. Maybe someday I'll be a dog trainer. I'd like to be. Either way, more information, honing skills is a good thing for me, for my dog, for future dogs. I just hate that her puppyhood was such a disaster. :P And yes, a lot of it WAS mis-information, and on the good side, it made me scramble to find BETTER methods, and I have, but I still don't know the best ways to deal with things like. . puppy biting. (I know A better way, but is it the best? I don't know. I need more information!)
You are my favorite dog trainer!! Please keep making these videos!! ❤😊
The WTFWIT phase is nearly on Year 2 and I've had it with the soiling around my house. I'm losing my mind with my almost 2 year old dog. It's driving me nuts. I don't even enjoy instagram and tiktok videos about dogs anymore. I can't stand it
Thank you. Simple as that but I mean it so much.
I would absolutely love a video about puppy biting. My pup just turned 6 months old and the only thing I can do is quietly take her to her kennel for a break for both of us. Sometimes not so quietly if she is in the middle of the crazy zoomies and keeps flying at my two kids. When we catch her, we try to gently take her to her kennel for a time out for all of us.
Subbed! I just moved into a room of a house where the landlords foster dogs from the overcrowded shelter nearby. I grew attached to a 6 month old Staffy (looks to be more of a pitbull). He likes to bite when we play and chew the blankets sometimes my clothes that I’m wearing. Any tips on training that behavior? He also likes to stand over the older smaller dogs a lot which piss them off but he’s learning.
Oh dear the cat. The cat is saying what the heck is this.
This is great content which others on CZcams neglect a bit. And it’s also probs 10 times harder- this wtf puppy phase for those in single dog home situations. They don’t have another dog to occupy the puppy. But hang in there it does get better.
Got a new puppy, and right now i hate this little shit.
Why did you do that? Seriously I gotta know. I can’t imagine anyone willingly getting a dog
Thank you for this! It should be required viewing for anyone getting a new puppy or adopting a shelter/rescue dog!
Omg your back ! Good to see your face :D gonna listen now. Cheers
Aw, thanks! Good to be back. We'll see how long it lasts 😅 We put a lot more energy into Instagram these days
Glad I stumbled on this video. Truthfully I've been looking for someone/something to decide for me about getting a dog, whether they pros outweigh the cons. But the reality seems to be what I expected- it truly is like caring for a kid. There's gonna be as many great time as sucky times, and people need to decide whether they're willing to endure the rough moments to get to experience the good ones. I'm still deciding, but this was a reminder to not rush a decision that could lead to a miserable outcome :')
I really appreciate you showing a realistic view into your journey, not just the troubles you had with your puppy directly, but the struggles you went through personally. I am debating on getting a puppy from a breeder in a few months and I wanted a nitty gritty view into what the first few days, weeks, months are like but found a lot of “THEY’RE SO CUTE! SQUEEEEE!” and that wasn’t helpful. I’m definitely dog eating (hehe) your video so I can circle back to it if I do get a puppy.
yes all these! i resent how many youtube videos out there that claim u can housetrain your puppy in 7 days:( it took iver five months, solid five freaking months! now we good but occasionally he doesn’t care and will pee but we are over the really bad phase. Get a shampooer for your rug, saved my sanity. My vet said its totally normal for pups to regress and take a full year to house train 😂
We’ve had our whippet since 12 weeks and he’s 17 months. He was house trained after 2 days and sleeps in a crate every night without making a sound (most nights). I was the one who wanted a dog to keep me company while working full time from home. My wife tries to be ok with it but often struggles and my daughters (16 and 10) just can’t be bothered and disappear to their rooms. My wife said that the first 6 months were very hard for her. She’s not really “a dog person” and taking on a puppy was tough for her. He’s been neutered and the only behaviour issues we have are the digging the middle of the sofa and obnoxiously barking at the window. Then when on walks he gets very aggressive towards black or dark brown dogs, and is constantly eating poo when I let him off the lead. He’s otherwise a good boy. However I’m still waiting for the love to kick in. I just simply don’t feel anything but stress for him. I look at him in his bed thinking I regret getting him pretty much everyday. I don’t know what to do apart from carry on and hope it gets better. If I get rid of him I can just hear everyone saying “well you wanted a dog”, or “he needs training“. My wife and daughters leave all the care to me but they don’t want me to re home him. I guess I’m just stuck with a poor decision for the next 14 years. To anyone thinking you want a dog to make you happier…. You need to be aware of what you are taking on. It is not a cure to things like depression or loneliness. Sure they perk you up at the very start with all the excitement but then after a year of getting under your feet, barking, eating poo, destroying their new £50 bed, constant whining even after a play session and massive walk when all you want to do is relax with a cup of tea and watch tv… also the burden of not being able to go anywhere for more than 3-4 hours max. Blah blah blah rant rant rant. I’m just tired of it and regret the whole thing. I want him gone but feel terrible for it because it’s not his fault… it’s mine.
Hang in there. Mines 21 months, I love him but every single day for the rest of the family is a challenge and I'm very tired of doing it all. My two kids are the same. I know it must get better at some point.
@@mohonisemo3201 thank you, it’s good to know I’m not the only one. Let’s see what happens at 24months :)
My wife wanted dogs, I did not. We eventually would get 3 of them…mostly my wife’s doing but i agreed, reluctantly. It was definitely work and I did most of the work but the wife did help. Fast forward, we lost all 3 dogs in 2022. 2 dachshunds were both over 16 yrs old and the 3rd dog (mixed breed, possibly part whippet) was a little over 10. It’s been 2 years and I think of them everyday. For someone who didn’t want dogs, I now can’t live without them. We adopted another dachshund and recently rescued a Doberman mix but I’m struggling with bonding with the Doberman. I have no idea why. My wife and I both wanted to rescue her. She’s a good dog. It’s only been 2 weeks. The dachshund and Doberman are getting along well for such a short time and yet, I’m feeling overwhelmed. The reason I’m responding is you mentioned depression. I too have been feeling depressed. I think it started during covid and picked up speed when i lost the dogs. And for the life of me, i cannot figure out what is wrong with me. I love dogs and I’m more depressed than ever. I think you are dealing with some other issues and the change that having a dog has brought to your daily routine is not the cause of the emotions you’re feeling but on top of other things going on, was enough to bring it all to the surface. I felt compelled to reply because I finally decided tonight to go see a therapist and get some help. My hope is that you’ll do the same. Whatever you have going on in life, it’s probably more than just the dog. Hang in there my friend and if you need to chat about the pup or feeling down, let me know.
Hey, it seems your dog might be picking up on your frustration or anger, which can contribute to behaviours like eating poo or constant barking, often indicative of anxiety. Also, anxiety can sometimes be genetic in certain dogs. Have you considered trying alternative methods to help alleviate his stress? Like, playing gentle music, using a home diffuser with calming pheromones, or exploring light medication options? Taking him to a Dog school or pet daycare where he can interact with other dogs could be beneficial. This exposure could help reduce his aggression towards other pups during walks by allowing him to become more accustomed to their presence.
Thanks i never knewn there was such a thing as the regret part. i did however feel less than when i thought to myself about placing him w another owner.. . only seconds tho i felt if for 30 second a couple times. so thanks the video was spot on for my situation here. . . i bought puppy during my low grade depression and tried to play if off as ill be fine. he was fine sleeping the night in a box next to my bed. (2lbs) after the third night it was wimmpering and whing but i heard to disregard and they will get the idea. i had a create and a playpen. i used the playpen for sleeping but again the crying started. i gave in and ordered those steps for the older dogs or puppy to use and now he sleeps at the foot of the bed.(his choice) not near my belly area or my face but at the foot. i leave night light near his potty pads and he will use them - he trained himself after two nights to use this area. with only two mishaps. but i learned to limit his space and it will help and it did. it was a huge plus to see the cat and other dog in the video as failed to recognize its a process for them all. i love this time with him and know it waill change once he gets older. again i didnt realize what i was up against. but you video restored my hope. . great job. keep them coming your pup is beautiful
This was very informative, thank you! My partner and I will be going to the local shelter soon to adopt a new best friend!
