Project Update!
Big changes are underway this year!
Having a functioning shop is the center that my projects revolve around. This old barn has been getting crowded and outdated, so I pulled the trigger on a new building.
A new building is something I have dreamed about and have been working hard towards for a long time.
The dream is finally becoming a reality this summer. I am excited to get it set up so I can really dive into my vehicle builds.

TDi swapping: donor parts and electronics

Cool, you pulled that sweet turbo diesel engine for your swap, but you're not done yet! There are still a few things you will need to grab before you haul that thing away. In this video, I go over those extra things and also do a deep, detailed, dive into the Passat BHW electrical harness requirements. Grab some popcorn. There is a lot to cover!

It is a fresh new year, and I am ready to get back to work on my Tacoma pickup. I will be pulling a turbo diesel engine out of a donor car for the swap, but first, I need to make sure it is a healthy candidate for the conversion. This build is getting exciting!

    I'm at this very stage of modifying the tire carrier to make it fixed the boxed frame. How did you shape the lower support bracket to get around the leaf spring hanger? I mimicked your design for the upper bracket, but am not sure about the lower one. Also, how did you bend the lower reinforcement plate that you welded to the bottom of the tire carrier crossmember? The curve is so gentle that I'm afraid to use the bending die (that I also copied fro you). Thanks!

    • @PostRt
      @PostRt Před 19 dny

      @turtleboy428 I am flattered! Once the upper brackets are installed, use some template paper to wrap around the frame to the lower side of the tire carrier bracket. It is a tricky piece to bend. I used a hammer and a dolly to ease the bends whilst cranked down in my bench vise. The lower carrier reinforcement was made out of a thinner steel, so it was easy to bend by hand; a gentle curve is all you need. Weld/tack it on the end, then clamp it along the curve as you go.

    First of all, genius idea. I never even thought about doing this. I was just about to pull the trigger on either buying that special 0400 spool, or buying another spring. I thought about trying another idea from a different video about putting 3 washers instead of one, but I have a soldering iron and decided to give this a try first. Luckily I have a spare just in case I screwed this up. First try and I 'welded' the plastic together. Not the prettiest, but it works. One tip for others from my own experience. I didn't get the holes 100% lined up as I was soldering the 2 pieces together and the recoil was very tight. I then used a drill to even the hole out so that it spins freely. Thank you again for your amazing tip!!

    @15:38. Another way of doing this for those that don't have a laser (and in some ways maybe better than a laser if you're not doing this on a level shop floor). Take two strings and attach them to form an X from matching points on the flattened section of the frame (from right behind the arch on the left side to where the bumper mounts on the right side, and vice versa). Make sure both strings are tight with the same amount of tension. When all 4 points are flat ('coplanar') the strings will touch in the middle. Really strong but light fishing string is perfect because it has a thin, crisp edge and has a higher straight to weight ration than paracord or cotton string. Piano wire is also perfect and you can use the sound made by plucking to sanity check if both are equally tight. If you wanna get fancy you can use a guitar tuner to actually measure it lol. This is an old school method for straightening machine frames and boxes. I've used this with great success leveling out my large format CNC router before attaching the bed. It works surprisingly well.

    • @PostRt
      @PostRt Před 3 měsíci

      That sounds like a neat idea! It can be tricky to find a flat area on an old frame. Especially with their stamped irregularities. Of course, the ultimate way to check for frame straightness and squarness is by referring to an OEM frame specifications sheet. They have a plethora data to help get things back to spec.

    If the internal frame coating is what I think it is (a non-drying lanolin based oil/wax) then I would do that *after* painting the frame. What makes lanolin great for inside cavity protection is that it likes to creep/spread, but this is not ideal to happen before painting the outside when you want it as dry and oil-free as possible.

    • @SolarMillUSA
      @SolarMillUSA Před 4 měsíci

      more info: I was curious if the Eastwood internal frame coating was a 1K Urethane similar to POR-15 but it seems to be quite unique. I might have to try this out on my '96 Taco. How's it holding up for you?

    • @PostRt
      @PostRt Před 4 měsíci

      The Eastwood internal frame coating is great stuff. I will be using it on the rest of the truck and on future projects. It is very tough! As for your other comments, you've learned that fluid film and other top coats are applied after the metal is sealed up. It will act as a secondary layer of protection. If the frame is newer or very clean inside, I would just use a protective spray kind of product as a preventative. Good luck with your project!

    If you’re going to use that brake light switch I would take the mount from the VW. Likewise, if you’re going to mount the computer through the dash like the VW I would cut out the VW computer mount and the water proof gasket. Looks like you spent many many hours on this video.

      This one was very involved and took many sessions to get completed. I am happy with the end result and hope people find it helpful. As always, I appreciate the feedback!

      I had to put a diode in the blue alternator exciter wire going to dash. Engine wouldn't always shut off. Another great video can't wait to see the finished product.

    Nice job I new guys 30 years ago doing strait frames on hilux Toyota trucks No reason to have holes in frames

      @user-kk4ze4uj3y Před 5 měsíci

      Ya no need for holes on frames It’s a money making grab by manufacturers If frames are closed They’d never rust The guys I knew did 2x4 rails straight frame closed no holes With eliminated body lifts Welded spring chackles To the frame Front and rear axles And you could put 35 and 38 on simple Guys were geniuses back in the day Had a great business called the toy box They made Fiberglass boxes as well Sadly I heard 1 partner passed And the other shut it down Anyway enjoyed video Great work

      @@user-kk4ze4uj3y manufactures aren't trying to sabotage their products by making them rust out so they can sell you more frames. Making a bad product bad enough that it consistently needs repair and replacement just gives you a bad reputation. Look how much Toyota had to spend on their frame recall for the 1st gen. It was hundreds of millions. We need to kill this idea that every time a company makes a.mistake or a product fails that it's just to make more money. It happens occasionally, but usually it's to SAVE COST in the initial production, not some devious scheme to *maybe* sell you another product or repair later on.

      @PostRt Před 6 měsíci

      I did this one for my personal vehicle. I have not done this as a repair business. It is a lot of labor, so I'd imagine a shop charging a pretty penny for this kind of work.
