Your English needs to be of a sufficient level to understand complex concepts in literature and language and if you want to study it as part of your degree, this level needs to be even more advanced. There are details on the university website here on how you can study Russian: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/modern-languages/modern-languages%3A-russian If that doesn't make sense or you have further questions, I'll do my best to help.

How did you know you wanted to study languages at uni? I love A-level Spanish and English too but I just feel that if I study solely Spanish or Spanish or French my options for the future will be mainly focused to being a language teacher or interpreter or translater. So currently my goal is English at Oxford. I know there’s a more positive way to look at this, so I’d really appreciate if you would be able to help me with your opinion. Thanks 💚

Hi, I knew I wanted to study languages at uni because they were the only subjects I was interested in knowing more about - do what you enjoy most. I also did not think about my career path after uni because languages don't restrict you to teaching and translating - you can go into marketing, entertainment, law, finance, and the public service sector among other things if you want to. I want to be able to use my languages after uni but you don't have to and you learn enough about other things to not have to restrict yourself to stereotypical 'language jobs'. Employers often look for language skills in other areas including those I've just mentioned so don't worry about limiting your future prospects. I'm biased but I would definitely consider studying English and Spanish at uni for a bit of extra spice...

You can go on a tourist visa you would just need to exit the country (ferry to Uruguay) around the three month mark!

Unfortunately, because I’m going to be undertaking paid employment, I need to get a full work visa otherwise the school wouldn’t be able to employ me

Hi Arthur, I have been offered a place for French and Spanish at Catz for October! I'm very excited, however I was wondering how you manage your workload? Also, how do you cope with so much independent work when having exams only in 1st and 4th year? I'd be thankful for any insights you could give. Thank you!

Ooooh lots of questions... Not to pass them off but you can probably get a good indication of how I dealt/deal with workload by watching lots of my videos. However, I think it's important to remember that you have to find your own way of managing the workload as everyone is different and it may take you more than a year to do that. Oxford is not like other universities and every piece of work you have to complete is usually carefully monitored and you cannot get away with not working. So, while the work is independent, your tutor will help to make sure that you are completing everything you're set to pass your exams in 1st and 4th year. I hope that makes sense and congratulations on the offer!

I really wish I would have seen a video like this BEFORE my graduate program. These are some great tips. I really like your idea of notes on scrap paper because just flagging the page doesn’t give me all the context I need. I’ll be trying your method the next time I dig into a classic. Thanks for sharing this information.

I would love to hear about how you coped with the period between Oxford interviews and admissions results. I am currently waiting to hear back and it is killing me! Loved the video.

If I’m completely honest, I cannot remember. I actually found out during the first lockdown during an online lesson so it was very odd and I had a lot of different things on my mind. My advice is to keep busy and keep working… that may not be too helpful but good luck all the same

Arthur, good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the crash - been there, done that. An academic question- which A levels did you do in your 12th and 13th year in secondary school? Good luck with the Argentina internship. Best wishes. Jim Scalise
