Conlon Nancarrow Interview
In April of 1977 Charles Amirkhanian journeyed to Mexico City to talk with composer Conlon Nancarrow, who had settled there after a self-imposed exile from the United States, following the harassment he experienced over his involvement with the Communist Party, and his fighting in the Spanish Civil War. The two discussed the mechanics of composing for the player piano, a process of manually punching literally thousands of holes in long rolls of paper. Nancarrow also relates his association, or lack there of, with other composers, his dissatisfaction with the lack of temporal control in the electronic music of his day, and his experience studying counterpoint with Roger Sessions. Sounding very relaxed and genial, Nancarrow also goes into some detail about how he composes and describes some of his later works.

KPFA's Robin Baxter interviews a slightly combative Frank Zappa in his hotel room. The two discuss Zappa's classical musical influences, and his own orchestral and choral compositions, as featured on his album and film, "200 Motels." Other topics touched upon in this brief interview include Zappa's then upcoming concert, shakeups in the Mothers of Invention, and what the public may or may not w...
I don't get these constant remarks about him being ugly. He's obviously a good looking guy, as was Bob Dylan in his prime.
😂 thanks frank
Why is the old guy there? He's clearly biased and isn't seeking any level of understanding, whether he personally agrees or not.
He was only 91 then...
This is not Frank's idea of having a good time. His idea of having a good time was to have sex as much as possible, and he believed that if people had more sex, they would have good mental health. He believed that politicians passed 'bad' laws because they weren't getting enough nookie.
He didn’t say like once.
And then came The Clash....
I’m 74 & saw him 15 times. He was always great and respectful of his audience.
But I like to do it.
Don't is a bad word, don't .. don't do that ,, what is that?? Not sure just don't do it.
Zappa for President
That is an astonishingly thoughtful - and thought-provoking - programme. Hard to imagine any TV network that would do anything like it today. Although I was disappointed (but not surprised) not to hear more from the women members of the panel.
i listen to talk radio. most of it is drivel.no decent music... Frank explains why.... this is an election year... Zappa for president was a thing years ago. Gibby Haynes of the butthole surfers years ago too.... i think with the A.I. thing now we would have a great leadership with these guys. i enjoyed this...THANK YOU !!!...rockettebob in reno

great upload Zappa knows his own mind- refreshing
Mr Zappa was a brillant musican
I'm just discover his interviews. What a amazing human being. Authentic, intelegent and stands behind his words through whole his career. Everything he says is gold.
Thank you.
Fascinated by this composer's life and work.
He was a very intelligent man and a bit eccentric but I wish I could have hung around with him it would have been fun
I wonder how many middle-aged Australians watched this show when it went out and thought, "Blimey, these kids aren't half right about things!"
love his work!!
GREAT INTERVIEW ! WEDNESDAY 3/27/24 MARCH 27, 2024
Too smart, he is too smart
What happened to all the fun in the world ?
Frank was all about organizing sound. Whatever came out of his head was put into notation. It took virtuosity to be in his band. I wonder what frank would think about rap music today. The influence that it has had on black culture.
I fell in love with his music. He could produce such strange noises and then put out something as beautiful as oh no
Sadly missed.
It's a very nice show here, in which Zappa is allowed to state his views on a lot of things, and field questions from every direction in his unique way. What a great time capsule!
edI missed Monday conference one of the Better interview programs in Australia. Don’t think it’s bettered the compere is very good

What a fantastic interview. Wish the interviewers had some better questions though. Weirdly specific stuff. Really cool format though, I love these long interviews

Swedish king as disguised pedestrian at 15:58-16:00
Swedish subtitles aired on swedish public service. Å vi älskar SVT!
in 1988 I was in Mexico City with some friends and I remembered Nancarrow lived there, so I looked up his address in the phone book and we went to his house and rang the bell. He answered and said he was gardening at the moment, could we come back later? So we did, and he invited us in and we had a wonderful visit for an hour or so, he showed us his studio (the player piano was in need of repair at the time, so he didn't play a roll). Looking back, it's amazing that he was kind and generous enough to welcome total strangers into his home who had no connection to him, other than being admirers of his music.
Now this was a very insghted, articulated sit down interview! And this was 50 years ago! Frank just was a visionary and knew where things were heading to....
This talk show in Australia basically insulted Frank from the host to people in the audience asking him questions my opinion of Aussies is there ass holes without manners
Frank. Transparent. Music is the best.
Thank you for this.
I love outsider art. Something about the nature of the person producing it is so easy to identify with. That, and some can be genuinely overlooked masterpieces.
Partch isn't outsider art. Outsider art is made by people uneducated in formal techniques. Partch on the contrary knew a lot of music theory, he just pushed it to the next level in formal terms.
What an unusual way of speaking he has, with the constant "no," refrains!
Great interview. But did anybody else notice, during that film clip of his band near the beginning, that Frank's fingers didn't match what we were hearing? Why would they do that?
All these years and this out of sych vid persists. Delete it!
The eighties had to happen or else nobody was ever going to cut their hair properly again. (Anyone who may feel offended should pay special attention to the special attention Frank paid to his own grooming: that moustache didn't get like that by itself).
I bought the first two 1750ARCH LPs ~1981 and was captivated. Around 1990 I somehow found myself on the 'phone with Charles Amirkhanian (sp?) who was crucial to those recordings. I think I just impulsively tracked him down to talk and he very graciously returned my call. He reported that Nancarrow had suffered a stroke (or perhaps a series of strokes) and was having difficulty composing - he'd get "lost" in the middle of a piece and "forget where he was". I could only laugh and muse that I was supposedly in posession of all of my faculties and that happened to me regularly when listening to any of a number of Nancarrow's compoaitions.
A unique life in mankind music history.
