SPECIAL Fishing Memories and Funny Tales
I return to a stretch of canal that I used to fish with my Granddad. This stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal was my 'stomping ground' in the late 1970's and early 80's. I fished many matches here and regularly pleasure fished here. Returning to this location reminded me of many happy fishing memories and also of a couple of funny fishing tales.
In days gone by, the fish in this part of the canal tended to be small roach, perch and gudgeon. bigger fish, such as bream and tench, are now present. During this session, I catch bream, skimmer bream, hybrids, roach and perch.
I set up a couple of float rods and fish waggler floats with worms, corn and maggot hook baits.

New subscriber here. Love the content.... Epic setting. My kinda fishing. Quality ❤
Thank you very much. 🎣😎👍
I had a walk along side this canal in bramley leeds and its beyond maintenance full of weeds amd rubbish thrown in.. great part of teh day was spotting a large terrapin in the canal had to google it but yeah apparently there about so keep your eyes put
Cheers Michael. Shame about the canal at Bramley. Didn’t know that about terrapins. Catching one would be a shock 😂🎣
Thanks for the lovely video Mark. The nostalgia and memories evoked when fishing somewhere we haven't been for years, and those who have sadly passed away since those days. The older we get the more precious these memories become...ghosts. oh what i'd give to fish with those people again. Lovely section of canal there Mark, and the bream was a cracker. When my net came apart like that i sewed it up with dacron...it seemed to do a better job than monofilament. Tight lines mate, and i look forward to your next film👍
Thank you very much Mike. Very true words. Good days and happy memories. Hopefully, we can all continue to create more good memories that we can look back on. Thanks for that cheers
Nice
Thanks
Another nice video Mark..always good to reminise about the days when we first discovered this magical sport of ours. I never actually owned a wicker basket, started off with a blue Shakespeare box and then graduated to a green tubular steel and canvas efgeeco seatbox which had two front and two side pockets on.. How times have changed. 😊🎣
Thanks Gary. Times certainly have changed. I did buy a Shakespeare box, which I sometimes still use 🎣 Nice and lightweight
Nice to see the Eel, we used to catch loads when we were kids.
Cheers. Caught a few recently. Not sure if there numbers are growing again 👍🎣
Nice video. I've never lived in Blackburn but I worked there for 14 years.
Thank you
Very enjoyable watch again my friend 👍, love the tale of the dead squirrel 😂, lovely looking canal section full of nostalgia for you.... nice Slab that too & an escaped Eel 😂 brilliant, all the best pal 👍🎣
Cheers Pete. True story 🤣
Just watched your video on the canal brought back some lovely memories. When I fishing with my dad sometimes with my brother who sadly is not with us anymore. I also fished matches in Blackburn also at Burnley. Nice to see ordinary angler's fishing. And not commercial water's. Look forward too see more videos.
Thanks John. I’m glad it brought back lovely memories for you, too. Cheers
Great vid mark look forward to them 👍
Thank you 😊
Great vid takes me back as well but use to fish it the Liverpool end around melling/maghull stretch early 70s good for tench then but use to see me off as was t experienced enough to get them out but great memories
Thank you. I remember hearing about how good the tench fishing was around there. Never fished myself. Good days cheers
I used to fish on the canal in maghull in the 70s if you caught a tench you were king for a day
Yes mark takes you back eh mate, you were lucky mate we never had no money for the bus, walking home with your wicker basket over your shoulder ,not a lot of tackle but always had a bottle of water and a few rounds of bread and a jar of meat past if we had any at home, the good old days eh mark, out their till about 10 ish the walk over the fields home mate, tite lines
Things have changed a lot haven’t they? They were good times though cheers
Great memories always being a smile. Not a bad days float fishing..👍
Thanks David
👍
Cherrytree ?
Feniscowles mate
Another good video mark 👍
Many thanks 😊
Realy enjoyed the film. I do love the perch. Canal perch are a lot of fun 😊😊😊
Cheers Gary, they certainly are 🎣😎
Amazing bit of dangling there! Often hear about this place but never actually been. Some very stocky tench there, still waiting for one this season but I'm fishing the wrong spots! That my excuse!😂 👍👍
Cheers David. It’s definitely worth a visit. Good luck 🤞🎣😎
Lovely days fishing Mark. A variety of fish and they were in lovely condition. Smashing roach near the end there...real beaut.👍
Thanks for commenting Mark. 🎣😎
Nice tench video on a cold day. My favourite fish. Well done.
Thank you John 🎣
great video my sort of fishing 1 rod and a chair and a lovely lake well done
Cracking session there,Mark🎣👌Great tips and even greater fish. Thank you for sharing and filming this. Can’t beat a good Tench! Take care🙏👍👏👏
Thank you very much David. All the best 🎣👍😎
Nice to watch fishing without a long pole you don’t see many on our canals these days
Thank you. That’s true 🎣
Exceptional video Mark. My type of fishing! Big roach, absolute heaven. I dont mind a big scrap with a tench or 3.
Very many thanks Lee 😊🎣
A good days fishing for you eh mark, some nice tench, bream, and some lovely roach eh mate,I must admit mate I know Tutti Frutti has been about for years but I've done nothing on them, and yes mate there's nothing wrong with them ice cream juices, better than ten pound for that glug stuff eh mate
Cheers Paul. I’ve always done well on tutti frutti, strange isn’t it? Bait prices are expensive aren’t they? I’m always up for a bargain 😎🎣
What a great session good tip’s shared thank you we never stop learning 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Gary
I fish this lake too and was in the swim to your left a month a go for lad v dad waggler sesh .Got beat by a ten yr old who hauled in tench after tench. Going back for a maggot feeder session next time. Another great watch, thanks for sharing.
Many thanks. Well done to your lad 🎣Good luck next time.
Great session 👍 tight lines
Thanks mate. Well done with your vids. Great fishing 🎣😊
A great haul and some good tips! Nice one Mark!
Cheers mate ❤️
👍😊
What was the lake called, must have missed it.
Wyreside near Lancaster
@@000fishing Which lake did you fish on the day please?
Riverside
Hi mark some lovely fish there mate.I fished the match there last Sunday got just short of 20lb out on the pole.I had some cracking roach out but every peg was in so it made the fishing difficult I would say.peg 4 won it around a dozen tench for 45 lb are so.Great watch and some weird and wonderful tips brilliant.
Just to add the winner caught all his tench on the green swimstem paste.
Thanks for the tips and a nice video. I've a look in the kitchen cupboard there's no ice cream toppings but I've got some squirty honey so I'll give that a go in me partical mix next time around 👍👍
Thank you Michael. Best wishes 🎣
Wow, lots of fish. Next time you say we will go to the canal . You follow me in the van, and we will end up here instead. 😅😅😅
Too true 😂 🎣
Great video as ever mark 👍
Thank you very much 🎣❤️
👍
I have to admit that I have learned such a lot from Andy and look forward with anticipation to his next video release, and to the amazing quality of the floats themselves, which to me are like works of art. I have just bought a batch of Sarkanda reed and so I'll be revisiting his video tutorials. I have to admit my own floats are nowhere near as good as Andys, but I have improved such a lot in the last year. ✌❤ Bob
He’s a great bloke. Superb floats and his tutorials are excellent. Well done making your own floats. Great to hear 🎣❤️👍
Could you tell me what stretch of the ribble was that filmed on please it looks fantastic!
It’s Ribchester village front. Day ticket from village shop mate 🎣
When I lived in Leeds I used to fish the L/L at a place called Rodley where barges and narrow boats were moored. Although I was an inexperienced angler back then, I always caught fish even on freezing winter days. Occasionally I'd get the roach going and catch numbers of quality fish on float fished bread. My local canal these days is the Aire and Calder, with the stretch I fish containing some big bream and chub along with plenty of roach.
Thanks Marc. Both venues sound great. I must try the Aire and Calder one day
It can go quiet, if a Pike's moved in ? - Just before You, mentioned it !!
Yes, very likely. 😊🎣
Hi Mark, very nice film & well done. I often like to fish about a foot, overdepth, with a single shot on the bottom - your views on this please ?
Thank you. Good tactics. Tench do tend to stir things up. Laying line on bottom with an anchoring shot is a good move.
I get the appeal of having a session on a wild unpressured water with the chance of a bonus fish, but would rather be on a still water commercial bagging up on F1’s and big mirrors
Whatever floats your boat mate, but I'd rather catch 10lb of river fish, than fill four nets with dumb starving carp. Tight lines pal, we are both anglers, and therefore share a love for our sport, even if your lack of appreciation for natural style fishing makes me sad.
Look after the Ribble. It's a real gem and reminds me how our Southern rivers used to be. 😢
Such a shame about the sad state of many of our rivers. I hope they’ll all get back to their former glory 🎣
Do you think I could get away with using my 11ft rod ? Great video by the way 👍
Thank you. Use whatever you have tbh. Longer rods are often favoured because you can pick up line faster and Float control is easier. However, I’ve used shorter rods, fishing closer in and they’ve worked fine. Give it a go. Good luck 🎣😊
When I finished Primary School in July 1958 little did I imagine that come July 2024 it would be featured in a CZcams video! Well the building appears briefly in the background near the end of this film. For me this video just captures what a great river the Ribble is to fish. Good job Mark.
Thank you very much Fred. What a wonderful school to attend and in such a lovely village. It certainly is a great river, cheers 🎣😊
Great video Mark 👍 definitely going to get up there soon 👍 tight lines mate
Cheers mate. Give me a shout if you need any info. Well done on your Severn catches 🎣👏
Great seeing another Ribble session and a great haul on a tough day. First ‘choach’ I’ve ever seen too.
Thank you 😊🎣
Another nice video Mark.. I love a day on the stick Float on the Ribble.. can't beat natural waters like the Lanky and the Ribble.. tight lines!😊🎣
Cheers Gary. Very true. Great places to fish 🎣
Fascinating, Mark. Pretty good net for a "bad" day 😂 I've not had a "Croach" yet from the ribble but I think I had one last winter on the lostock, I'm going to watch my video again now you've prompted me. Used to be a good number of big gudgeon in the ribble too? Don't know what's happened there. On my canal there's a spot where I always catch Tommy ruffe but alas the gudgeon have long gone. I don't think it's a water quality issue as both waters are much cleaner than in the 60s and 70s. Just curious? How long was that session? 👍👍👍
Thanks 😊 The only way to describe them is that they look like a roach but something just isn’t ‘right’ about them. Larger mouths, more streamlined body. I occasionally catch gudgeon on the Ribble, seem to be more of them than ruffe. The session was about 4.5hrs, from what I recall.
You were lucky to catch a roach x chubb hybrid as they normally spawn at different times.
They are an oddity. Some anglers say that they don’t exist, and that they don’t hybridise. Whilst others say they are a hybrid. I’ve caught a couple of dozen of them over the last three years, or so. At first glance, they look very much like a roach but something is a bit ‘off’ - bigger mouths, more streamlined body. A real anomaly.
Another nice video. I've never fished the Ribble even though it's only 9 miles from where I live, Chorley.
Thank you. It’s a wonderful river John
