There was a time in the late 60's when I really enjoyed Oldham. Have to say though it was in decline even back then. It was what it was ,a place, that produced wealth for a few, and a living for every body else. Wouldn't say that it was a great place to live in back then as Britain was moving on, and it was very much in the shadow of Manchester which was an exciting, and thriving place. Did like the people though.

I was born there and lived there till i was 18 I find footage like this so interesting :D Really enjoyed watching this, i paused to take in the details of the pictures and info :D Thank you :D

Had a aunt Ivy and uncle Ernie Steeples that lived somewhere in Pudsey , remember going to stay with them in the very early 60s ,and wondered if any one can remember where they lived..I would have been about 6 or 7 then.

Very nice video, especially where old buildings are superimposed over new buildings. But it’s sad to see all traces of the late 1700s and early 1800s gone. Surely someone could have said during all the demolitions “let’s keep this building for people to look back on, a monument to past times”

Saltaire old station was closed not the railway itself....and the Shipley Pride is not at the Victoria Road junction........some brilliant photos on this video...there is a video on the Yorkshire Film Archive of some of the old buildings in Shipley being demolished ..........my dad was born on Atkinson Street..would love to see any old pics of the now demolished houses there. Mum was born at Hillside Cottages in Windhill site on which my Grannys flat was located later. I was born at Woodend in the flat above my Great grandparents

Great video. What a shame so many of the old buildings and architecture have been lost, to be replaced by modern monstrosities.

Excellent video, I love the ancient images and paintings of Oldham. The town would have been better put back to pasture when the industries had finished.

I was born in Oldham and was shipped of at the age of 4 ,in the 1960s Australia. My Grandad died from working in the mills from the dust ,also got his hair caught in the machines and made a mess of him . Pray to God literally my Nan then cam to Australia but all my other family stayed and i never went back.

There's an error. The entertainment place at the bottom of Snig hill was called the 'Black Swan' in the '60s, hence it was colloquially know as the 'Mucky Duck'.

Am from huddersfield.every time I go for a visit something has changed.its not the same anymore.

Lived here for the first few years of my life and still miss it.

I just loved the tale of Oldhams past, beautifully done. Thank you. I’m now 72 years old and, joined the Armed Forces at 18 years of age. Leaving my home in Derker, to see the world. I can never go back to my roots because of it’s ruination. It once was a town with a soul. Now, it’s just a sh1thole. Stay safe people.

My late mother came from Halifax we used to go there 3 times a year from when I was about 9 until 14, I haven’t been since 1972 and not seen any of my family there since then. I want to go back soon before it’s too late to visit where she came from and take my son also remember many happy times. I’m sure it’s completely different now! Thank you for the video

Too depressing , what a beautiful town we had, tragic to see its destruction in the name of progress, those responsible should be deported

So sad to see this happen to so many towns and cities across the country.

Just seeing this for the first time. My first 16 years were in Oldham, then my family moved to America in early 1958. Progress is one thing, but there is an element of sadness too. I will be 83years old soon but I do have some good memories.

We've still got Dobson's: the shop on Southgate is gone, but the factory remains on Northgate.

Error 'Market Street' with the line of cars down the middle of the road (4.40) is actually Old Market and the today view is Market Street with Old Market in the distance to the left where the maroon shop facia is. Fountain Street so called because of the fountain situated at Wards End! It was later moved to King Cross but road widening caused it to be moved again to Spring Edge in 1932. 7:18 That is Mixenden, the buses are on Mill lane, camera is looking towards the Golf Course and yes there was a mill just to the left off picture but was demolished and replaced with an insurance company I remember it as provident, also now its new houses. Thanks for these videos they are fantastic!

Why do all old photos look so much better? so clean with no trees spotless fields, now everything looks messy and horrible cant see anything for trees everywhere

Brighouse was beautiful once. Now full of Takeaways and Charity Shops. The Brighouse of today is unrecognisable from the lovely Black & White pictures in this video. :(

Another historic town being gutted for modernisation

The Bar did not stand on North Street, but on Newborough, as the main entrance to the town. North Street is to the left. Bar street is along the line of the Wall, behind it. The area of bricks with the clock is where the Bar stood.
