I lived the first 22 years of my life in Bradford, and the last 56 in Western Australia.
Very sad to see many of the buildings I grew up with have now gone.
I remember watching the last wall of the Swan Arcade falling.
So sad to see Kirkgate Market - such a place of tradition and memories - replaced by the soulless building there now.
I first learned of the ten pound scheme to emigrate to Australia at a film presentation in the Mechanics Institute - another grand piece of architecture no longer around.

Thing is that said “monstrosity” is about to be knocked down and history repeated, the site probably being left as a hole for a couple years as it still isn’t clear what the council want to do with the site within the City Village scheme!

I loved watching this video - thank goodness for the pause button on my pc! New builds don't have the character that the old builds have sadly. Remember Abbey National House opposite City Hall? Stood for approximately 30 years then demolished. The wonderful Kirkgate Market - now a concrete lump. A few years ago I remember plans mooted to coat the exterior of the Arndale Centre in YORKSHIRE STONE for goodness sake. Pull down a beautiful building made of Yorkshire stone, put up (as described - a concrete lump and talk about cladding it in Yorkshire stone.

Very nice video, especially where old buildings are superimposed over new buildings. But it’s sad to see all traces of the late 1700s and early 1800s gone. Surely someone could have said during all the demolitions “let’s keep this building for people to look back on, a monument to past times”

There is just enough still in existence in and round bradford to allow you to try and picture what it would have looked like when in the glory days of the mills in the 19th century. Architecs in the 60s and 70s really had some kind of complex going on in their small-minded brains.
Could anybody explain why they demolished the wonderfull Kirkgate Market instead of refurbishing it to the best of their abilities, at that time, until the next generation came along with new ,improved methods of preserving it. The exterior could have been saved.
I think it is widely accepted that pulling it down was a massive
mistake. Shame on all you who had a role in that!

I've always thought it would be interesting to try and find out what homes those god-awful architects chose to live in themselves. Did they opt to live in any of their own bunker-like creations? Or did they instead choose...for example....elegant Georgian or Victorian era town houses? I think we know the answer to that.

Great work but it does me no good when I get reminded of how great the city of my birth was when I was growing up there in the late '60s to early '80s. So many factors conspired to destroy it.......and destroy it they did. Left for the suburbs in the late '80's......left altogether in 2016. Wild horses wouldn't drag me back........people in power looked the other way while it was being torn apart and abused. Ask me how I know........better still, don't. In relative terms, Bradford is a new city built in the 1800s and demolished to be replaced by motorways and bland 20thc buildings that are replaced every 20 years when planners find a new fad to follow, sad city that had a wonderful heritage that was squandered.

What puzzles me are some of the buildings that they list, such as the concrete eyesore that was a Building Society office opposite John Street Market. This was empty for a long time and would have been an ideal choice for demolition, yet all those beautiful buildings that gave Bradford it's character have been swept away and many of the survivors stand, out of context, on back roads, in isolation, where they were once prominent buildings in a proud prosperous city.
