aka The Wandering Widower.
I launched my CZcams channel in October 2019, uploading a few kayaking videos, however, in June 2020 I changed the name of the channel so that I could include a variety of content from my many rekindled outdoor interests from my teens and twenties.
One of the main aims of my channel is to try and encourage people of all ages to get out in the great outdoors and embrace nature, in whatever form that takes. Having been diagnosed with Stage 3 Osteoarthritis in both knees in 2023, I experience constant aches and pain, often severe, affecting my knees and hips. This said, I will continue to promote the health and well-being benefits of spending time in nature in any way possible.
This channel has been slowly growing over the past few years and I would like to thank all my viewers and subscribers for calling by, leaving comments, and motivating and supporting me.
All the best,
Dave 👍

A short walk south along the shore line at Grain, and a visit to a few of the Isle of Grain Coastal Artillery Defences.
GRAIN TOWER BATTERY...
Grain Tower Battery - Built in 1855, this historic fortification is open to the public and offers stunning views of the Thames Estuary.
The Grain Tower is a mid-19th-century gun tower situated offshore just east of Grain. Standing in the mouth of the River Medway. It was built along the same lines as the Martello towers that were constructed along the British and Irish coastlines in the early 19th century, and is the last-built example of a gun tower of this type.
It was built to protect the important dockyards at Sheerness and Chatham from a perceived French naval threat during a period of tension in the 1850s.
Grain Tower stands about 500 metres (1,600 ft) offshore at the eastern tip of the Isle of Grain, where the mouth of the Medway meets the Thames.
Its location enabled the tower's arc of fire to overlap with that of the guns at Garrison Point on the Isle of Sheppey, on the other side of the Medway.
DUMMY BATTERY...
Dummy Battery, originally known as Grain Battery, is a disused fortified gun battery located about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) south of the village of Grain, Kent at the confluence of the Rivers Thames and Medway. Completed in 1865, it supported two nearby coast artillery batteries at Grain Fort and Grain Wing Battery, a short distance to the north. The battery's arc of fire overlapped with Grain Tower just offshore and with Garrison Point Fort on the Isle of Sheppey across the other side of the Medway. It consisted of an earthwork with a concrete core supporting several gun emplacements with magazines below. It appears to have gone out of service as a battery by the time of the First World War, though it briefly took on a role in anti-aircraft defence.

Hi David, good to meet you on the White Cliffs at Dover this morning. My brother and I enjoyed talking to you. Look forward to seeing the video that you was filming today. Best wishes Paul Kendall
Hi Dave...i see this has a surge peak of 1000w, could it boil an 800w kettle or would you say thats not advised? Similarly for a quick blast of a 600w heater? Thanks
I used to dig lugworm for local fisherman in my teens at Grain. I lived down the road in Allhallows. Happy days in the 70's. Thank you David for taking me back 45 years and yes I liked and subscribed.
I lived on the isle of grain in the late 80s early 90s as a kid. From what ive been told its nothing like how it used to be. I remeber watching a big white ferry that used to dock at sheerness over the water, the dragons teeth on the left as you go down from the car park, climbing the "martello" battery tower, going in the tunnels, going round as far as i could to watch my dad opperating the cranes in thamesport, the bmx track that used to be on the far side of the field, Looking for fishing takle on the beach. Thank you for bringing back some memorries for me 👍
Glad this video brought back fond memories, Matt, Thanks for watching, and commenting 😄 All the best, Dave 👍
I left Allhallows in 79 by joining the navy. I would spend hours on the marshes as a kid.
@@HappyAsLarry-eh9kc You joined the Navy the year I left. Hiking and filming the White Cliffs of Dover tomorrow 😉

Lovely! I'll have to have a look around the area. The Grain Tower looks like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie or video game.

Used to live by grain , theres some lovely walks there and an absolute ton of history .
Yes, an abundance of history and a very peaceful area for walking

Yes, I had 3 days of torrential rain on a trip out last year, held up perfectly, with no leaks.
Interesting walk. Thanks for posting.

Cheers, Matt.
Well that's inspired me to pop up there for a wander, great video as always!
Thanks, Liam. Although I visited during the week, I was surprised by the lack of people considering it is the school summer holidays. It's a strange, remote place with a mix of industry and history.

Cheers, fella. This is the first time I have incorporated drone footage as b-roll. It's a bit of a faff setting up and packing away, but I think it is worth it in the long run. I must admit, I enjoyed this walk much more than I thought I would, plenty of downtime off-camera 😉

This kayak is the Story Ranger 1-person hybrid kayak, I purchased this kayak about two years ago. Below are two review videos I produced back then if you are interested. czcams.com/video/q-s5uE6bFyk/video.htmlsi=RY0xOVm-upm6Z5lP czcams.com/video/r_VVZNNQkq4/video.htmlsi=kb1RPmSNrzrJjxsw
Built-in batteries disqualifies this product from my future purchases -- good show
Yes, it is a throwaway world these days. It seems that everything has a built-in lifespan, be it sealed batteries or components. The internal battery in the mic that came in my DJI Pocket 2 combo kit has died after 4 years of heavy use. This said, the batteries in my Rode Wireless Go which I bought in 2020 are still going strong 🤞 All the best, Dave 👍
@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout yupp correct and hard to avoid. Lost my perfectly working DJI Pocket 1 to bad batt. I replaced it with an Action 4 for that reason. Cheers and fun shooting
@@TexpatOTG Same here. Although my Pocket 2 is still functioning correctly at the moment, I recently went back to the traditional style action camera by buying an Insta360 Ace Pro. I originally bought the Pocket 2 for tracking and smoother panning moments. Sadly, the tracking has always been hit-and-miss on the P2, and I have learned how to pan and tilt smoothly through practice over the years. Live and learn, every day is a school day 🤣
It seems like a good peace of technology. I’m definitely interested in checking this out. Just a suggestion, It would’ve been nice to actually see what this light looks like on a bike in your video. Also, it would’ve been nice to get some close-up shots of the remote features as opposed to this far away shot in your video. Also, it would’ve been nice to actually see how this light functions on an actual bike while riding
I was supposed to follow this video up with a series of reviews on the e-bike and accessories, but unfortunately, an ongoing lower back injury and stage 3 osteoarthritis in both knees (which has got progressively worse) means it was too painful to use the e-bike.
Oh I see. Sorry to hear about the health issues. Hope things are getting better now

I'd agree to all of that.
Well said david ,a nice paddle down the canal or river its so close to nature, a good countryside walk through the forest or farm land, a nice day spent over a lake fishing, just like yourself i love being out in the nature
I am never far from water, Brian. 🤣
Hi Dave, I am considering purchasing a new seat for my Sandbanks Style Optimal inflatable kayak because I find the seat, that came with it, uncomfortable. Ideally, I would prefer a fairly rigid back rest that does not collapse when I lean back on it. Would you recommend the Aqua Marina high back kayak seat. Like you, my back can ache after paddling for some time. It's an age thing, which an old boy like me suffers. I can't really find any other seats that look suitable. At the end of the day, the decision is down to me.
I seriously cannot praise the Aqua Maria High back seat enough. It is an absolute essential while out paddling
What is the pump name model please that you used?

Hi David, what would you advise on taking out on the kayak for these small trips? Could you possibly do a video on this ???
Hi Jamie, thanks for commenting. I did make a winter loadout video a couple of years ago, the link is below. czcams.com/video/eeP7jjLV45w/video.html I have been thinking of making a video on what I use and believe is essential on a summer day out on the paddle. I will probably make this video when cleaning my kayak after my next trip out in a couple of weeks. ATB, Dave.
Hi David , what’s your thoughts regarding this units ability to charge an e bike
Hi Allan. I haven't charged an e-bike with this power station, however, it should breeze it as it is 518v AC and e-bike batteries are typically 36-48v
Great video, Hi Dave I'm looking at buying your kayak I'm in two minds on purchasing the single or tandem. Majority of the time I would be out in the kayak by myself but I may try and get my young daughter out with me. Just wondering how harder it would be with the tandem rather than the single when out in it on my own. Thanks, Lee
Hi Lee, the kayak is in storage at my son's in Yorkshire at the moment, so it will be a few weeks before I bring it back down to Kent. If you drop me a line at daveonthepaddle@gmail.com I will bookmark your message and let you know when I am about to sell it. A tandem is easier to paddle than a single kayak, and they track straighter. The downside for me now is the weight and length when carrying it/portaging. That extra 5-6kg plays havoc with my osteoarthritis ATB, Dave.

Brilliant paddle Dave, really enjoyed it. Looked tough on the way back, especially in that heat. Thanks for the update too... I enjoy the camping ones you do too, so hopefully you can get out in the van with the air tent, later in the year. Im half thinking of getting a larger tent myself too... Just to make like easier once it's pitched. Cheers, Terry.
Thanks, Terry. Yes, the heat got to me on this one. Some hectic and tiring days beforehand, and 4-hour more or less continuous paddling wore me down. Larger air tents are not hard to set up; the bad side is if you have to pack them away wet. 😉
Absolutely love these videos. My childhood spent tramping around all those fields and lakes. Lovely. ❤
Glad you enjoyed my South Darenth/Horton Kirby aerial videos. There will be further local videos uploaded from time to time. 😃
Fantastic video Dave, it is a beautiful stretch, quite a long paddle, I even had kingfishers flying over me when I went along there. Also used the same launch point, car park and cafe. Would also like to camp there one day and paddle the other direction too. I used a campsite a couple of miles away and like you had a very very hot day too. Really enjoyed reliving my trip watching your video.
Thanks, Mark. I was really impressed with the set-up at Bodiam Boating Station. Alex and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will probably leave it until after the summer holidays, then get down there for a few days in my large air tent. I will combine a paddle downstream with a visit to Bodiam Castle 👍
My tent is the same as yours: a Eurohike Rydal Air 400 and its weighs 13kg. Thanks. 🙋
Hi David it's June 2024 and I will soon be using my Rydal air. Last year I camped out for about 6 months in my Dometic poly cotton 3 person tent and it was brilliant! 11:24 However due to my disabilities in both my arms and legs I can no longer roll it up much less lift it into my car! I thought I would have had my caravan by now but I need to wait another couple of months. So I bought a tent I could lift which is the same as yours but I'm a bit worried about the hydrostatic head. You say yours is 4000 but mine says 2000! Any information as to why this is please? And if I have to spend several days in rain which is likely in the UK, what would you suggest to improve waterproofing the tent! Thanks in advance for yours and anyone else's suggestions! 🙋😬🙏
How do you connect the hose to the tent mine won’t inflate
5.55 in the video!
That footage is so good is the camera 4k. Does it have decent flying time. Also would you advise only using a drone in very good weather. I've no idea but im guessing thats about 300 ft above the lakes Sorry for all the questions David
This drone's highest resolution and frame rate is 4K/30fps. The flight time is approximately 20 minutes per battery, however, the combo kit comes with three batteries. When placed in the charger dock, all 3 batteries charge to full in 90 minutes. I was flying at about 200 to 250 feet due to the pylons and high voltage cables, which can cause transmission interference. The only downside to this drone is it does not have obstacle avoidance, but for £369 I can live with that. I used to own drones ranging from £1400 to £2000, this drone does all I need as I will mainly be using it as a b-roll camera in the future. I hit the buy now button as I got it reduced from £369.99 to £319.99 😉 The drone is rated to level 5 winds ( 19 - 24 mph. 8.5-10.5 m/s. ), I have been out in gusts of 20 to 25mph and (with common sense) the drone handled fine. You cannot fly in the rain, and very cold conditions will affect the flight time. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CDWQ15XM?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I usually just watch CZcams on my phone, but I had to watch this on my big screen! Its not every day I get to see my house from the skies! I have watched this twice already. Great video David!
@@GLNZFishing Thanks, I flew over my place in this one as well 😉
You bought a great drone. For affordable money, that's a bonus. Really good buy. Enjoy the drone. The video is very easy to understand
Thanks, the Atom seems reliable and fit for what I need it for . Time will tell.
Beautiful video. I love the different perspectives, the flowting camera movement in combination with such peaceful music❤
Danke, Jennifer. I am glad you enjoyed my channel trailer. Of all my outdoor activities, I find kayaking the most relaxing and enjoyable.
Hi David, I could do with a bit of help here. Ive just bought a unit and charged it up, and after watching your video again..... about 9.30 mins in you show that the socket unit...middle one......... lights up when you switch it on. My unit isnt....... I'm plugging in my laptop and it can take 10 mins and lots of swithcing on and off nad holding it down to get it to show a green light and then work. laptop is 69w so should be an issueat all. the other sockets come on immeidately with a green light. DO you think this item is faulty? Ive emialed the manufacturer as the ebay supplier isnt responding. But its been less than 24hrs and I know i can send it back if its faulty. your response will be much apprecaited......should show a green light immeidately when I switch it on? Thanks Liz
Hi Liz, It certainly sounds faulty. I power on, plug my laptop in, and press the button and my laptop draws 62w. Have you try charging or powering any other item under 500w via the AC point, that will confirm if it is a problem with your laptop lead or the power station? ATB, Dave.
@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout I did try a few other devices, my mobile works but that is a different slot. then all of a sudden its started working properly, so I'm going to run it this week at home to see if it does it again. dont want a faulty wire. Does it have a years manufacturing warrenty do oyu know? Besides that its great, its charged the laptop three time and mobile 3 times nad its on 69& from full.
I am very pleased with mine, especially as I bought it reduced to £160 on eBay, It has a 2-year Manufacturer's Warranty. Fingers crossed yours continues to work OK 👍
