What a beautiful day for my first trip out in my Aquatec Ottawa Pro this year. I always start my kayaking session by getting out on the water locally in Kent to find my sea legs and check out my equipment. In this video, I am paddling on the upper River Medway in the Tonbridge area. I was planning on paddling from Yalding to Oak Weir Lock and back, but I could not access the water at Yalding or Hampstead Lock due to building work. So, Tonbridge it was. All in all, this was a very nice, stress-bursting time out on the water.
    Details:
Launch/Exit Point: Lower Castle Field Car Park, 5 The Slade, Tonbridge TN9 1HR.

Hi David - good to see you out on the Medway yesterday. It was actually my Ottawa Pro’s maiden voyage. I launched from Porters Lock and paddled up to Tonbridge and back - beautiful day for it… and the Ottawa handled the canoe passes like a Pro - phew! 😁
    Cheers, Liam

Great seeing you out in the Ottawa, and running a couple of the canoe/fish passes. When the water level is high, all the canoe passes are doable down to Oakweir Lock. Oakweir and the rest downstream are a no no with a skeg. Another great paddle is Grove Ferry to Fordwich on the River Stour. It is tidal but not a difficult paddle against the tide, although if you catch the tides it makes life easier.
My next trip out will be on the Basingstoke Canal, launching in Mytchett . A long day for me, but well worth it

Another great video David! I believe the river fishing seaon is closed until 15th June, unless fishing for trout. So should be quite for the next month or so.

I wondered why I did not see any anglers about. Glad you enjoyed the video, next one will be a paddle through the city of Canterbury. 😜

Somewhere between the flood barrier and the "danger danger" sign lies my original GoPro camera, may it rest in watery peace! Good to see a familiar route, love the Medway :)

That will be the danger sign that nobody takes any notice of 😂. Fortunately, my cameras are tethered to the kayak 😉

Good to see you out and about Dave.the first trip of the year is always an exciting one, especially when testing out new kit. Great video mate.

Thanks, Mark. I needed a local paddle to blow away the cobwebs, and to test out my arthritic knees before venturing further afield 🛶😉

@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout I just had a week off work camping and kayaking along the River Avon from Bristol. What a stunning part of the country! From the Clifton Suspension Bridge to the first lock is very tidal, but after that, it is a really smooth paddle with calm waters.

@@markbenson5821 That sounds great, Mark. I am hoping to get a bit further afield over the next 5 months, however, backpack-type camping is not possible anymore due to the osteoarthritis in my knees combined with lower back problems. This said, once my micro camper conversion is completed, this will add a new dimension to trips away kayaking and hiking. It is what it is, never give up, just learn to adapt. 😉

Yes, Matt. I was getting flood warnings for this river right up until last weekend. Also, lots of debris in the water at the moment.

Hi David, what would you advise on taking out on the kayak for these small trips?
Could you possibly do a video on this ???

Hi Jamie, thanks for commenting. I did make a winter loadout video a couple of years ago, the link is below.
      czcams.com/video/eeP7jjLV45w/video.html
I have been thinking of making a video on what I use and believe is essential on a summer day out on the paddle. I will probably make this video when cleaning my kayak after my next trip out in a couple of weeks.
      ATB, Dave.

I recently bought the DJI Mic 2 to pair with the Ace Pro to keep things waterproof. It works great, EXCEPT you should be aware that you cannot record the audio separately on the mic itself despite what the CZcamsrs say. That's a pity! Also, you have to pair it every time you want to use it which is a pain.

    • @DavidWilsonOutandAbout

I found the sound very dull and quiet. As much as I like the idea of the mic, it is not for me.

Hi David, lovely video. However, why wear a life jacket (buoyancy aid) and not fasten it? Not a great example to younger viewers. G.
